Lekki Port automation system will boost Nigeria's growth

The recently commissioned Lekki Deep Sea Port in Nigeria is set to revolutionize the country's economic growth and competitiveness in cargo movement on the continent. Laurence Smith, the Chief Operating Officer of Lekki Port, highlighted the full automation of the port as a key factor in this transformation during an interview with CNBC Africa. Smith, who has been involved with the project since its inception in 2012, emphasized the strategic decision to build a greenfield site outside the congested Lagos City, where existing ports had reached capacity. By collaborating with partners such as Toleram, China Harbour, Nigerian Port Authority, Lagos State Government, and Ijampo's Authority, the vision for Lekki Port became a reality. The state-of-the-art facility boasts unique features that set it apart from other ports in Nigeria. Unlike river ports located inland, Lekki Port is a deep sea port situated right on the Atlantic Ocean, allowing for efficient navigation with a 16 and a half meter dredged harbour basin and 600 meter turn-in circle. The port can accommodate some of the largest container vessels globally, up to 18,000 to 20,000 TEU vessels. The automation of the terminal, powered by an advanced IT system, ensures seamless operations and enhances efficiency. The gate is fully automated, eliminating the need for manual checks and enabling a pre-gate and vehicle booking system to regulate truck entries. This innovative approach optimizes resource allocation, streamlines truck movements, and enhances overall productivity within the port. Smith projected significant economic benefits from the Lekki Port project, estimating revenues of $200 billion over 45 years with the creation of approximately 180,000 direct and indirect jobs in the port and related industries. The port's strategic location offers opportunities for cargo transshipment, attracting large vessels to drop off and pick up goods destined for other countries in the region. In terms of manpower, the operator CMA CGM has invested in simulator training programs to equip staff with the necessary skills to operate the advanced equipment at the port. Smith likened the simulators to gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox, providing a realistic training environment for crane and RTG operators. Community engagement has been a cornerstone of the project, with efforts to involve local communities in employment opportunities and contract provisions for suppliers from the region. Initiatives to support community development, such as clean water, sanitation facilities, and scholarships, aim to foster a positive relationship and ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. Looking ahead, the focus is on attracting shipping lines to leverage the port's efficiencies and expanding into phase two to increase capacity to 2.7 million TEU. With the potential to handle the entire throughput of Nigeria in one location, Lekki Port is poised to become a key player in driving economic growth and trade in the region. As Nigeria positions itself as a destination and origin country for cargo movement, the advanced infrastructure and automation system at Lekki Port offer a competitive edge in the global logistics landscape.
