As we wait in vain  for the details of his detention by the Guinean security agency, the entire family of the Sports Press in Africa want to call on the Guinean political authority to release Dioulde Diallo with immediate effect and without any condition. His continued incarceration for over a week is condemnable, intolerable and definitely a clear violation of his human right as he has neither be brought forward for trial nor charged with any offence. The Union of Sports Journalists in Africa (http://aipsafrica.com) think that Dioulde&#39;s continued detention is also a deliberate attempt to censure and gag the press in Guinea as well as clamp down on the independence and freedom of practising Journalists with in the country. We seek the support of all who care for the legacy of freedom which Guinea stands out as a reference to appeal to the Guinean leadership to instigate the release of Dioulde TODAY. As an experienced and top journalist in Africa Dioulde has the right to expression of his views and the right to exercise his freedom of movement without let or hindrance. The cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,295,556. Nairobi has 104 cases, Kiambu 20, Busia 11, Nakuru 9, Kisumu 5, Mombasa 5, Machakos 5, Taita Taveta 4, Turkana 4, Embu 2, Kajiado 2, Kakamega 2, Kilifi 1, Makueni 1, Meru 1, Migori 1, Murang’a 1, Nyeri 1, Bungoma 1 and Uasin Gishu 1. 88 patients have recovered from the disease, 46 from various health facilities, while 42 are from the Home Based and Isolation Care. Total recoveries are now 86,609. One patient has succumbed to the disease pushing our cumulative fatalities to 1,854. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the departed. A total of 347 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,430 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.  59 patients are in the ICU, 25 of whom are on ventilatory support and 29 on supplemental oxygen. 5 patients are on observation. 15 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 14 of them in the general wards and One in the High Dependency Unit (HDU). FIFA (www.FIFA.com) President Gianni Infantino spoke of the importance of football in fostering unity, peace and solidarity during a visit to Bamako, the capital of the Republic of Mali, where he held meetings with the head of state, Bah N’Daw, the Minister of Youth &#038; Sports, Mossa Ag Attaher, and officials from the Malian Football Association (FEMAFOOT), led by FEMAFOOT President, Mamoutou Touré. “I am delighted to be here today, in a country that has experienced difficult times, and which is now on the right track once again,” the FIFA President said. “Unity is crucial for the future of this country and football can play its part in this process, because football has the unique power to bring people together, boys and girls, men and women. Mali has the potential to shine in Africa and also at a world level and FIFA is here to support where needed.&#8221; During the meeting with the authorities, the FIFA President took the opportunity to share with him the recent agreement between FIFA and the Democratic Republic of Congo to launch a schools football programme. The initiative will use football as a tool to teach children life skills, as well as creating a greater sense of unity and solidarity among participants. A similar initiative could be launched in Mali in order to encourage children to return to schools, many of which are still experiencing low attendance figures having had to close during the difficult times the country experienced recently. Accompanied by the FEMAFOOT President and the Minister of Youth and Sports, the FIFA President visited the site of the future National Technical Centre and laid the foundation stone. The technical centre, which is supported by funds from the FIFA Forward Programme, will see training and development facilities made available for regional and national football in Mali. “Today is an important day in the history of Malian football,” the FIFA President said. “This new centre will provide essential training and development facilities to ensure that Malian footballers can reach their full potential. In Uganda, menstruation management presents a daunting challenge for so many adolescent girls and women. The inability to adequately manage their periods means they often choose to forego school and stay at home for several days each month, according to a study on menstrual health management in Uganda by the International Rescue Committee. Smart Girls Foundation is a non-profit, girl-centered development organization in Uganda that endeavours to empower and mentor girls in health and education through their Smart Bags for Girls initiative. The Smart Bag, a backpack designed with the user in mind, consists of a backpack, reusable sanitary towels, a menstrual pad sewing kit, and a menstrual health management information booklet. With a $50,000 grant in 2018 from the UNFPA Innovation Fund, Smart Girls Foundation designed, produced and distributed more than 5,000 Smart Bags in central and eastern Uganda in 2019. During distribution, the team ensures that existing community structures and leaders are involved in the process at schools by working with Local Councils, the Office of the Prime Minister, and partners on the ground. Parents, teachers, and guardians are also involved in learning how to sew menstrual pads as well as understanding how to support the girls through hygienic menstrual health management.  “It is so exciting to see how the bags help them to continue going to school and feel safe and not embarrassed by their menstruation,” said Jamila Mayanja, Smart Girls Foundation Founder With feedback and guidance from UNFPA, Smart Girls Foundation has launched a new and improved Smart Bag that is now made out of recycled plastic material and has a solar kit installed onto the bag. The refined bag helps young girls in rural areas access light at night so that they are able to read their school books and revise.  The foundation partnered with Reform Africa, a local start-up organization to produce the new and improved bag. The revised version uses Reform Africa’s recycled plastic waterproof material for the exterior while maintaining Smart Girls Foundation’s concept for providing menstrual kits within school backpacks for girls.   Reform Africa is an organization that aims to reduce plastic waste in landfills by creating a durable and waterproof plastic material that is fashioned into stylish bags for adult and modern users.  “We were previously using local kitenge fabric for the bags, but sometimes the girls struggled with the rainy weather or when their pads were soiled. So the partnership with Reform Africa was naturally a great idea,” Mayanja said. “Reform Africa was previously making bags for adult consumers, but we were looking for ways to help impact communities in a greater way,” said Faith Aweko, Founder of Reform Africa. “The introduction to Smart Girls has helped us to reach a broader market and help girls who truly need it with our product and designs.” UNFPA provided support for the Smart Girls Foundation and Reform Africa partnership to produce and distribute 1,500 bags of the new Smart Bag in 2020 throughout Kyaka II settlement and in Kampala. Download logoAn armed clash in Jahjah village, located near Koch in the Unity region of South Sudan, has led to homes and offices being ransacked and burnt to the ground. “When the looting started, most of us ran to nearby areas to shelter in the bush,” stated a community member. “We thought that the clashes would continue, but thanks to Ghanaian peacekeepers who arrived very quickly we were able to come out of hiding and, now, many of us are beginning to resume our normal activities though we have suffered many losses.” 50 peacekeepers from Ghana, led by Major Kofi Safo, had established a temporary operating base in Koch earlier this month. “The minute we received reports of the ongoing violence in Jahjah, we were able to send priority patrols at very short notice,” revealed Major Safo. “Though the perpetrators had fled by the time our peacekeepers reached the scene, we were able to successfully prevent the situation from becoming worse or causing more harm to communities living here,” he said. Preventing conflict from breaking out or swiftly mitigating its effects on innocent civilians  by establishing temporary bases in hotspots has been a focus of UNMISS operations in recent months. “The area in and around Koch has been volatile of late with early warnings of possible conflict,” stated Lieutenant-General Shailesh Tinaikar, UNMISS Force Commander. “Since we were proactive in deploying our peacekeepers ahead of time, it made it much easier for us to move swiftly when we heard about the situation in Jahjah.” Since this incident, which took place on 20 February 2021, UNMISS patrols to areas in and around Jahjah village are ongoing. The mission is also evaluating the security and humanitarian needs of those who have been affected. “Making sure that communities and humanitarian partners are safe is a top priority for UNMISS,” said David Shearer, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in South Sudan. “When I visited Bentiu a few weeks ago, I had assured the Governor of our full support to the state administration on security issues. I’m very pleased that our Ghanaian peacekeepers responded quickly and we’re keeping a close watch to make sure tensions don’t increase in Koch.” Peacekeepers at the temporary base here are consistently engaging with community leaders and members to build confidence and bolster the fragile security situation across the county. The meetings, held in Cotonou, took place exactly five years after Gianni Infantino won the elections for the FIFA Presidency in 2016. “The football passion here in Benin is incredible and the love for our game is heartwarming and inspirational,” the FIFA President said. “I want to commend President Talon for the investment his government has made for football, and the good work carried on by FEBEFOOT in nurturing football talent to improve skills and develop the game throughout this great nation. We need countries who can be models for others to follow both in the region and in the world, and Benin can very well be one of those models. We look forward to working even more closely with the government and FEBEFOOT to elevate football in Benin to the highest levels.” The importance of promotion of sports and football in particular, through schools, a common theme throughout the FIFA President’s tour of Africa was one of the key topics in the discussions with the authorities. WHO Emergency Medical Team (EMT) in collaboration with WHO Academy held the first Mass Casualty Management (MCM) training course in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on February 8–11, 2021. The training was facilitated in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MoH) and WHO Ethiopia.  Thirty-one healthcare workers drawn from federal, regional, and private hospitals participated in the training. In his opening remarks at the launch of the training, Director-General of Medical Services of the Ministry of Health Dr. Yakob Seman said, “The training aims to strengthen the capacity of health care workers to manage mass casualties more effectively, and will help them develop their respective health facilities’ casualty management plan.” Mass casualties following disasters and significant incidents are often characterized by quantity, severity, and diversity of injuries that can rapidly overwhelm local medical resources&#39; ability to deliver comprehensive and definitive medical care. MCM addresses health staff&#39;s coordination and actions in an emergency unit in the first 30 minutes after a mass casualty incident has been declared. Effective MCM is a complex partnership involving the Ministry of Health, other government sectors, agencies, the private sector, and others working together to reduce the impacts and adverse outcomes of mass casualty incidents. Participants expressed their appreciation of the training, stating that they leave the training better equipped to properly manage casualties and save lives. Dr. Gelaw Hailemariam, a participant from Jimma University Hospital, said that the practical training has already given him concrete ideas on how to prepare a MCM plan for his hospital in addition to improving his overall knowledge of MCM with examples of good MCM practice. At the end of the training, Dr. Nelson Olim, WHO Academy Simulation Lead, congratulated the participants on their successful learning achievement in the WHO Academy MCM programme. Dr. Olim also appreciated the collaboration with WHO Ethiopia and WHO African Region for the smooth conduct of the training, confirming that the WHO Academy MCM Programme looks forward to supporting the national rollout of the programme. The training is part of the programme that is being rolled out by the WHO Emergency Medical Team Africa Training Center in Addis Ababa, which will be officially launched by mid-2021. WHO launches first Mass Casualty Management (MCM) training in Addis Ababa

The World Health Organization Ghana has donated 6000 Dignity Kits valued at GHS 447,300.00 to the Ministry of Health to be distributed to the various COVID-19 treatment centers across the country. Presenting the items, the WHO Country Representative for Ghana, Dr. Francis Kasolo said he was confident that the supplies would go a long way in helping admitted COVID patients perform basic daily activities. Each dignity kit contains personal effects such as toothpastes, sanitary packs for women, soap, toiletries, comb and hairbrush. Dr. Kasolo also presented 1,000 printed copies of a National Strategic COVID-19 Response Plan for the period: July 2020-December 2024 which was developed by the Ministry with support from WHO Ghana. The need for a strategic plan for COVID-19 response arose after a review of the existing National Emergency Preparedness Plan for the country to be able to better respond to anticipated threats of the pandemic for an improved quality of life for Ghana. Dr. Francis Kasolo, said the document was to serve as a guide to all COVID-19 response efforts and therefore echoed the need for everyone to play their contributing role to end the pandemic. In addition to the above, WHO Ghana donated 500 pieces of IT tablets worth over GHS 800,000.00 to the Ministry to support the Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) implementation and strengthen disease surveillance, particularly for COVID-19. Present at the brief ceremony was the Country Representative for UNFPA Ghana, Mr. Niyi Ojuolape who expressed happiness that his organization worked with WHO in the procurement of the Dignity Kits, adding that the UN Family was united in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and always ready to extend a hand of support to government to see an end to it. Receiving the items on behalf of the Minister for Health, the Chief Director for the Ministry, Mr. Kwabena Boadu Oku-Afari expressed appreciation for the gesture and promised that the items would be put into good use for the benefit of all those intended.
