As Africa stands on the verge of an urban mobility transformation, we are at a critical crossroads. The decisions made today will shape the future of transportation across the continent for decades to come. The objective is not merely to increase the number of vehicles on our roads but to ensure these vehicles are sustainable, efficient, and equitable. Electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer just a trend; they are integral to achieving Africa’s sustainable transportation future.

Africa is urbanizing at an extraordinary pace. Cities such as Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg and Nairobi are expanding rapidly, and with this growth comes an increased demand for efficient and reliable transportation solutions. However, this urban growth also brings significant challenges: rising carbon emissions, air pollution, and traffic congestion. The dominance of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles only exacerbates these issues.

According to global mobility experts Andreas Herrmann, Walter Brenner, and Rupert Stadler in Reinventing the Wheel: The Future of Mobility, adopting electric vehicles is about more than just reducing carbon footprints. It is about building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable transportation ecosystems for the future.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-case-for-electric-vehicles-in-africa"><a></a>The Case for Electric Vehicles in Africa</h3>



Why electric vehicles? The reasons are clear.



EVs offer a comprehensive solution to Africa’s mobility challenges, aligning well with the continent’s broader goals of sustainable development. They come with multiple advantages over traditional vehicles. Environmentally, electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, which can significantly reduce air pollution in densely populated cities across Africa. This is particularly critical in regions like Nigeria, where respiratory illnesses linked to poor air quality are on the rise.



Economically, EVs are more competitive. We are seeing a shift from the “green premium” to a “green discount”. The acquisition cost of an EV is now comparable to that of an ICE vehicle. The total cost of ownership is significantly lower due to reduced maintenance needs and lower energy costs. Moreover, Africa is well-positioned to power its EVs through renewable energy sources like solar and wind, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.

&nbsp;This presents a unique opportunity to lower operational costs and invest in local energy resources. The transition to electric mobility also promises job creation across various sectors—manufacturing, infrastructure development, and vehicle maintenance—as charging networks are built and maintained.



Like the continent&#8217;s rapid adoption of mobile banking and decentralized solar energy, Africa could leapfrog older transportation technologies by embracing electric vehicles.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overcoming-the-challenges"><a></a>Overcoming the Challenges</h3>



However, the shift to widespread electric vehicle adoption in Africa does present challenges. Limited charging infrastructure, high infrastructure development costs, low awareness, and limited product choices remain barriers to EV adoption. Yet, these hurdles are not insurmountable. Addressing them will require strategic collaborations across the value chain, including OEMs, financial institutions, investors, energy providers, fleet operators, auto distributors and Governments.



Several initiatives are already underway to expand EV infrastructure, including projects being developed by companies like MAX, Spiro, Kofa, and Oando Clean Energy.

These innovators are building and scaling charging networks, EV assembly, and financing programs across Nigeria and other African nations. Innovative financing models will help make EVs more affordable for consumers, particularly in markets where upfront cost is a primary concern.



Public awareness is another key factor. Educating communities about the environmental and economic benefits of EVs will help shape perception and increase demand. A coordinated approach that includes infrastructure development, financial innovation, and community engagement will be critical to overcoming the challenges of EV adoption in Africa.

This theme comes at a pivotal moment for the continent. For the first time, an African nation, South Africa, has assumed the presidency of the G20, taking over from Brazil in November 2024. This historic milestone marks a critical opportunity for Africa to place its development priorities and those of the Global South at the centre of the G20 agenda. South Africa’s presidency, coupled with the African Union’s (AU) newly secured permanent seat in the G20, is a key opportunity for the continent to shape global economic and geopolitical discussions in 2025.

The theme “Leading in 2025: From Regional Consolidation to Driving the Global Africa Agenda” underscores Africa’s ongoing journey toward regional integration, a fundamental pillar of the AU’s Agenda 2063. The vision of a unified and economically empowered Africa hinges on consolidating regional efforts to position the continent as a formidable global economic actor.



With transformative initiatives led by Pan-African institutions such as the AU, AfCFTA Secretariat, and Afreximbank, Africa is making significant strides in industrialisation, trade harmonisation, and private sector development. These efforts will drive local productivity, reducing the cost of doing business, and enhancing intra-African trade and investment.



The continent’s global leadership position offers a unique opportunity to ensure the continent’s voice is not only heard but actively shapes international discourse. However, coordination and collaboration between Africa’s public and private sectors will be essential to fully harness this potential.

The drive to innovate across Africa is on the rise, with a thriving startup ecosystem underpinning its potential as a technological powerhouse. Home to the youngest and fastest-growing population in the world, the continent today is more connected than ever before,<a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1124283/internet-penetration-in-africa-by-country/"> with internet users jumping more than 350%</a> in the past ten years.



Amid this rapid digital evolution, fintech continues to be the leading vertical for investment within the broader African tech landscape. Since 2000, African fintechs have cumulatively<a href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2023/africa-unlocking-the-fintech-potential"> raised $6 billion in equity financing</a>, reflecting strong investor confidence in a sector expected to<a href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2023/africa-unlocking-the-fintech-potential"> reach $65 billion in revenue by 2030 – a 13-fold increase from 2021</a>. Despite a global <a href="https://www.fintechfutures.com/2024/07/global-fintech-investment-fell-by-19-in-h1-2024-according-to-new-innovate-finance-report/">slowdown in fintech funding in the past year</a>, the long-term forecast for Africa appears optimistic, driven by a young and tech-savvy demographic that creates fertile ground for fintech solutions, coupled with an increasingly supportive ecosystem.



Recognizing this vast potential, the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator program continues its commitment to uplifting fintech. Since its inception in 2023, the Accelerator has enabled up to 45 startups a year to take part in an intensive 12-week program offering mentorship, resources, and opportunities to secure funding, reflecting Visa’s mission to champion fintech solutions across industries.

Now in its 3rd cohort, the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator has announced 19 new startups shortlisted to participate in its biannual program. Representing 21 African countries and diverse subsectors—from embedded finance and SME lending to digital banking—the startups will gain access to tools, connections, and expertise to scale their solutions, aligning with Visa&#8217;s ongoing investment in Africa’s digital transformation. Supporting the entrepreneurial drive of women across the continent, 85% of the startups feature female leadership, rising from less than 50% in the inaugural edition<a href="#_ftn5" id="_ftnref5">[5]</a>.



The three-month program will conclude with an exclusive in-person Demo Day, offering startups the opportunity to showcase their groundbreaking solutions to an audience of investors, industry leaders, and potential partners.



Support for participating startups extends beyond the parameters of the program. Recently, Visa announced strategic investments in four fintechs—Oze, Workpay, OkHi, and ORDA—that graduated from the Accelerator’s inaugural cohort. Visa’s commitment to fintech continues with 3rd cohort of Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator

Stories abound of how young school children in rural areas across Africa walk long distances to reach their places of learning and of pregnant women who must be carried in wheelbarrows to receive medical attention at clinics in outlying areas. There are also tales of how poor road infrastructure has and continues to hinder the transportation of goods across the region, which, in some areas, become inaccessible during the rainy season.



Congested and inefficient port and harbour infrastructure has also caused inordinate delays to move goods or resulted in ships taking weeks to berth to unload their cargo. Inadequate border infrastructure means transporting people and goods takes longer than it should – a frustrating experience for businesses and individuals. This affects efforts to not only boost intraregional trade and investment but tourism and intraregional travel as well.

These examples emphasise the importance of adequate and modern transport networks and infrastructure to facilitate economic growth and achieve better lives in a continent where inequality persists. Poor national and regional road networks, fragmented rail systems, and inadequate airports and ports increase logistics costs and hamper economic diversification and industrialisation efforts. This limits the competitiveness of African goods in both regional and global markets.&nbsp;



All is not lost though. African governments have acknowledged the importance of investments in infrastructure, in particular transport infrastructure, because it is the backbone of any economy, let alone the region. They also realise that infrastructure development is critical owing to its significant impact on economic growth and social progress. Infrastructure development is also crucial to thrive under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which aim to improve the continent’s trade position in the global economy.



To unlock growth and trade opportunities and to bring meaningful development to communities, a coordinated approach between public and private investors is needed to attract investment in infrastructure, including efficient and modern integrated transport and logistic networks. Current estimates from the <a href="https://www.afdb.org/en/news-and-events/public-private-partnerships-needed-bridge-africas-infrastructure-development-gap-65936">African Development Bank</a> (AfDB) show that Africa needs between $130 and $170 billion in annual infrastructure funding, with a financing gap of $68 to $108 billion. At least 15% of this total relates to transport infrastructure.



Prioritising cross-border transport infrastructure as part of economic development plans has become even more critical if the region is to achieve its developmental, economic, and social goals. For instance, Tanzania has identified transport as a key focus area under its &#8216;Tanzania Development Vision 2025&#8217;, aiming to improve roads, railways, as well as air and water transport systems.



Similar projects are underway in Kenya, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), focusing on integrated transport corridors, highways, and border posts, as well as ports and harbours. While these investments are commendable, additional capital is needed to expand and achieve modern, cost-effective, integrated transport infrastructure.



Cross-border connectivity remains a challenge, even in regions with increasing integration, like east and southern Africa. Concessionary funding from Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) will therefore be crucial for developing cross-border transport systems beyond pit-to-port models, expanding railways and roads to support multi-sector growth and private sector development.



The significant investment required for large-scale, cross-border projects demands innovative financing solutions. This will involve public-private partnerships (PPPs) to leverage risk-sharing mechanisms and blend funding sources. DFI support is especially crucial for low-income countries with underdeveloped financial markets, enabling them to secure necessary infrastructure investment.

A successful PPP model requires supportive policies, government guarantees, and flexible project frameworks, since no &#8216;one-size-fits-all&#8217; strategy works across Africa’s diverse markets. Well-structured contract drafting ensures clarity in operations and maintenance responsibilities, attracting private investors and spreading financial risk.



Financial institutions like Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking will play a critical role in unlocking investment for transport infrastructure and improving cross-border connectivity across Africa. With a growing presence in Tanzania and east Africa, Nedbank is well-positioned to facilitate these investments.



Regional governments should therefore continue to implement macroeconomic and financial reforms to attract large-scale private sector capital for transport infrastructure. Addressing sovereign and political risks will be critical in enhancing investor confidence in the transport infrastructure sector. These reforms are essential for facilitating the movement of goods and promoting trade and growth across Africa.



Investing in transport infrastructure today will pave the way for a connected, prosperous Africa tomorrow; one that can trade competitively, grow sustainably, and thrive regionally. It will also address the inequality that exists between the impoverished and the wealthier people across the continent, because better infrastructure is essential for better lives.

Social media has been described as a double-edged sword. On one hand, it connects us globally, helps to break barriers and is a platform&nbsp;for&nbsp;self-expression&nbsp;and&nbsp;creativity. On the other, it is also often blamed for eroding real-world, in-person connections.&nbsp;



However, the increased penetration of internet connectivity, mobile, and smart devices in Africa has seen young people on the continent embrace the use of social media to advance their education by accessing information and learning materials in real-time, helping them connect with other learners, educators, and mentors across geographical boundaries.&nbsp;&nbsp;



To give deeper insights into how young people are using social media for education and learning, the November edition of the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Mondays Africa featured views and opinions of undergraduate students from the United States International University of Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya. The discussions contextualized how young people at higher-learning institutions use social media to research, participate in discussion groups, communicate with lecturers, and collaborate with peers on group assignments. Through social media tools and platforms, young people are understanding the world in a way previous generations did not and are gaining exposure to diverse learning experiences. &nbsp;



“I spend almost eight hours a day on social media platforms. It has influenced my learning space tremendously. It also helps me complete my assignments and meet people who are more advanced in my career path, such as data scientists,” says Martin Kyaremateng, a Ghanaian undergraduate student in Data Science and Analytics at USIU-Africa.&nbsp;



Kyaremateng, who juggles his time between 20 WhatsApp groups adds, “I have also benefited from the influx of new social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram. This is the best thing that has ever happened to the world of technology because when I was in high school, we only had WhatsApp as an information-sharing tool, but a lot of my connections today come because of my presence on platforms like LinkedIn.”&nbsp; &nbsp;



Carine Ishimwe from Rwanda is another undergraduate student at USIU-Africa, pursuing a degree in Information Systems and Technology and majoring in Cyberspace and Forensics. She uses social media not only for entertainment, but as a learning tool too.&nbsp;



Ishimwe spends close to 10 hours a day on social media, interacting with other learners and educators across 50 WhatsApp groups. And while some of her activities on social media are related to entertainment, many others, she says, are related to schoolwork. “Social media has changed my life for the better. I got scholarship links from one of my friends on WhatsApp,” says Ishimwe.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



Global studies show educators are becoming increasingly aware of social media’s effect on the learning process. According to Georgetown University, students were said to react positively whenever a teacher was willing to use social media as a learning tool since “an online chat discussing a certain book gives students the ability to open up and share their opinions.”&nbsp;



That is how Dr. Collins Oduor, an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at USIU-Africa’s School of Science and Technology, prefers to look at technology – as an interactive communication tool for both learners and educators. Dr. Oduor engages his students on the school’s WhatsApp group where important messages are shared not only within his department but university wide.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Dr. Oduor says social media has opened up and enlarged the scope of education, since students are learning to do more research, learn more than what is presented in lectures, and assess the information&#8217;s value. It also makes student-teacher communication more convenient.



“My work has become very easy in terms of reaching out directly to the students because social media gets us close with each other in terms of breaking the barriers. I am able to reach them at any time, even after the official hours. They can also reach out to me at any given time. To me, the benefits of social media far outweigh the disadvantages,” says Dr. Oduor.&nbsp;



Dr. Oduor advises that rather than reduce their use of social media, learners need to be empowered to learn how to use it productively so that when they come to class, they can share meaningful ideas, have deep discussions, and see how the knowledge acquired can be applied for better outcomes.&nbsp;



However, there are also the dangers that come with the uncontrolled use of social media. Grace Makwaza, a student from Lesotho studying International Relations and Criminal Justice at the university, says she thinks social media presents a “challenge [to] our intrinsic values as human beings”.&nbsp;



Makwaza urges young people to strike a balance, rather than categorize social media as a good or bad tool. “Social media is a tool. However, the moment I see myself spending more than 12 hours there, I question my capacity to hold on to my value of discipline. Perhaps that discipline is not as strong as it is supposed to be,” she says. “So more than anything, I think we need to gauge how strong our intrinsic values are, instead of polarizing social media as either a good or a bad tool.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Another major drawback of social media is the distraction caused by the constant flow of information. During class or examination time, Dr. Oduor ensures that school rules regulating the use of social media are strictly adhered to, including the prohibition of using phones in the exam room “unless the exam is an open book.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



There are also fears that social media distraction can interfere with the learning of subjects that require strict discipline. Jennifer Bessie, a Psychology student, says her professors will not allow them to be distracted by phones because that will interfere with work ethics as practicing psychologists in future.&nbsp;According to Bessie, uncontrolled use of social media is detrimental to the emotional and mental growth of learners in the younger brackets.&nbsp;



&#8220;As a student in the psychology field, we have learnt much about cyber bullying and its effects on mental health.&nbsp;Teenagers and other young learners have started to compare themselves with what they see on social media and that is very worrisome. Too much screen time affects the development of such young children,” she says.&nbsp;



However, Bessie says social media has key advantages&nbsp;in psychology, including online counselling.&nbsp;



“Due to the limited number of psychologists in the world and the rise in mental health issues, we found out that having online tools at USIU-Africa&#8217;s counselling centre where I trained as a peer counsellor is good because&nbsp;we can have online counselling sessions with those we can&#8217;t meet physically. You can still get in touch with such people and help them manage certain mental health issues. So, social media may have some distractions, but it has a lot of mental health advantages for those of us in the psychology field,” says Bessie.&nbsp;



Dr. Oduor says that “most institutions of learning do not have social media policies,” a challenge that both governments and learning institutions share.&nbsp;



As a way forward, he suggests that there is a need to craft policies that support the use of social media to achieve the true impact in education across board.&nbsp;



While more public schools are embracing usage of tablets and adding computer literacy to curricula, a lot more work needs to be done to streamline national and institutional-wide policies to promote positive use of social media in the learning environment. &nbsp;



With social media now an invaluable tool for learning in education and the work environment, such policies will need to be both protective and productive, unlike the reactive nature of current laws. In the meantime, it will require discipline and parental regulation on screen time for young learners, for all to benefit from social media while avoiding unintended drawbacks.&nbsp;

Orange Money customers will be able to instantly obtain a virtual or physical debit card, linked directly to their Orange Money wallets. These cards will allow seamless payments both locally and internationally, enabling transactions with local merchants and on any website or mobile app that accepts Mastercard. Africa Collective was formed during a high-level business roundtable on Africa in Davos, Switzerland, at the time of the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in January 2020. Based on the impactful discussions between pan-African and global leaders held on the occasion, Africa Collective was formally launched together with the AfCFTA Secretariat as a patronage partner and in the presence of H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, at an inaugural luncheon held on&nbsp;



19 January 2023.



The platform is an all-year, pan-African initiative by and for private &amp; public sector players on the continent. Africa faces a shortage of nearly 15 million teachers to meet universal primary and secondary education goals by 2030, according to a report published by <a href="https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000387001">UNESCO</a>.



To tackle this shortage, there is a need to shift from the exclusive use of traditional teaching methods to the implementation and use of education technology (EdTech). According to UNICEF, about 108 million young people across the continent are out of school. These staggering numbers point to the work that must be done to chart the path to meaningful education for Africa’s young population.



One of governments&#8217; main roles is to create enabling environments for various sectors and industries to thrive. One indicator of an enabling environment is the formation of policies that inform decision-making. To make suitable investments in education, policies relevant to 21st-century learning need to be formulated. EdTech-specific policies would guide investment in technology-enabled education.



The October 2024 edition of Mastercard Foundation EdTech Mondays Africa brought together education ministers from Ghana and Sierra Leone, experts from the Mastercard Foundation, and education specialists Inspiring Teachers Ghana to assess the role of policy in advancing education technology.



The <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/education/brief/edtech-readiness-index">World Bank&#8217;s Education and Technology Readiness Index (ETRI)</a> emphasizes that well-structured policies and practices are essential for effectively integrating technology in education.



Some countries are way ahead of others in driving policy development and implementation. Rwanda, for example, has drafted its EdTech Policy, which is awaiting official&nbsp;approval. Ethiopia’s ICT in Education Strategy and Policy has been&nbsp;approved, while Ghana is in the early stages of a roadmap to develop its EdTech&nbsp;strategy and policy.



In Ghana, the education system is undergoing a significant transformation and is being retooled for the “Fourth Industrial Revolution.” Through education reforms, young learners in Ghana who terminated their education at lower levels now have an opportunity to further their education.



“With the Fourth Industrial Revolution, everything is changing. Jobs we thought were good and reliable will no longer exist in the next few years. For Ghana to remain competitive in the global economy, the government decided that education—from kindergarten all the way through high school and university—had to be looked at through a different prism altogether,” said Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Minister for Education. “[This is] a process that began by looking at the purpose of education through the development of STEM high schools for girls to ensure their numbers went up.”



This has resulted in Ghana coming close to attaining gender parity in secondary education.



Adutwum added that while Ghana has mineral resources, including gold, which can transform the economy, developing policies that spur human capital is more important if the country is to remain competitive in the global economy.&nbsp;



Sound education technology policies can also help education ecosystems remain resilient in the wake of diverse shocks that cause wide disruptions.



Sierra Leone, for example, has experienced multiple shocks and disruptions. Its 11-year civil war (1991-2002) greatly impacted the number of teachers working in the education system, followed a decade later by the Ebola outbreak in 2014, which forced schools to shut down for almost a year. And just six years after that, in 2020, COVID-19 disrupted the education system in the country once again. &nbsp;



“As a result of all that, the government took a deliberate action to introduce education technology as a tool not only to leapfrog our way to the 21st century but also to recover from learning losses. This is why technology sits right at the center of our educational system,” said Conrad Sackey, Minister for Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Sierra Leone.



While many African governments recognize the importance of developing effective education policies, panelists at the EdTech Mondays event said that the focus of these policies must be on the continent&#8217;s diverse challenges and how technology investments can address them.



A key priority when drafting any policy is listening to stakeholders. In this case, this group should include the EdTech community, users, teachers, and, most importantly, parents. This way, policies can achieve more than just putting devices and internet access in the hands of teachers and learners.



“We must look at the skills gaps and how to bridge them, especially for the educators. We don&#8217;t have to wait for everyone to be at par [across Africa] because we have seen very innovative, locally developed EdTech solutions that are bridging some of these gaps in access,” noted Suraj Shah, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Thought Leadership at the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning.



Once the skills gaps are addressed, Shah says Africa needs policies to change the way classrooms are run. He recommends rethinking the current “one-way information system” in which the teacher stands in front of a classroom, speaks, and learners take notes. Instead, he advises that education systems of the 21st century should allow for integration of tutor-student interaction and practical project assignments backed by technology.



“By introducing EdTech in schools, we make the education system resilient so that if physical learning in the classroom is disrupted, there will be a way for learners to continue learning,” he said.



What, then, are some of the key indicators of an effective EdTech policy?



According to Regina Mensah from Inspiring Teachers Ghana, an effective policy should achieve the following:

<li>Increase accessibility to education technology for all communities, especially those facing the most significant barriers to success.</li>



<li>Narrow the gender gap by having an equal number of boys and girls with access to education technology.</li>



<li>Measure the upward trajectory of learning outcomes. For example, a country&#8217;s number of exam seating candidates and their performance should have increased by a certain percentage in their basic education examination each year.</li>
</ul>



Mensah adds the continent’s challenge lies not in the lack of such policies but in the implementation of the ones already formulated. “Policies are there, but they are crafted to be implemented. It is at the implementation stage that you get the effect of the kind of policy that has been formulated,” she says.



Collaboration, it was agreed, is critical to continent-wide success in transforming the education system, since lack of infrastructure, accessibility, funding, and personnel constraints are shared challenges. If African countries could establish a way to exchange insights into education policy formulation and share success stories with one another, they could leapfrog the development phase and move directly into implementing policies that support education technology.

The dawn of the digital age brought with it promises of a connected world, but for many in Africa, that promise seemed distant in the early 1990s. Telecommunications were a luxury, available only to a select few, with vast areas of the continent left in silence, disconnected from the global conversation. Sub-Saharan Africa still lags behind other regions in terms of digital infrastructure coverage and access, with only an estimated 22% of the population using mobile internet services. Following the success of the UK-Rwanda Business Forum in January 2024, interest in deepening trade relations between Rwanda and the UK has grown. In response, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), in collaboration with the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), the High Commission of Rwanda in the UK, and the British High Commission in Kigali, organized the Taste of Rwanda event and participated in the World Coffee Innovation Summit in London from October 15-17, 2024.



The events, hosted at the Law Society and ExCeL London, aimed to promote Rwandan products, including coffee, tea, and horticultural goods, and strengthen trade ties between Rwandan exporters and UK importers. They provided a platform for business-to-business networking, fostering potential partnerships, and exploring new opportunities for trade and investment in both markets.

Washington, DC, U.S.A&nbsp;– Rwanda has once again demonstrated its commitment to business excellence, achieving impressive results in the newly launched World Bank Business Ready (B-READY) Report unveiled today, solidifying its position as a leading investment destination in Africa.



The first edition of B-READY assessed the business environments of 50 global economies, focusing on three pillars – regulatory frameworks, public service delivery, and operational efficiency, and has ten indicators, which include Business Entry, Business Location, Utility Services (water, electricity, and internet), Labour Force, Financial Services (access), International Trade, Taxation, Disputes Resolution, Market Competition (Public Procurement), and Business Insolvency.



Rwanda is among the top performers in several key areas, demonstrating the country’s sustained drive to enhance its business environment and foster a welcoming climate for investors. In the 2024 B-READY Report, Rwanda achieved the following scores:

<li>81.31 in Operational Efficiency (3rd globally)</li>



<li>67.37 in Public Services (8th globally)</li>



<li>70.35 in Regulatory Framework (17th globally)</li>
</ul>



These scores position Rwanda as one of the top-performing countries globally, and the top performing country in Sub-Saharan Africa.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-highlights-of-rwanda-s-performance">Key Highlights of Rwanda’s Performance: </h2>



<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li>Operational Efficiency: Rwanda remains one of the fastest countries in Africa and globally for company registration. This efficiency stands in contrast to global averages of 32 days for domestic firms and 39 days for foreign firms, reinforcing Rwanda’s position as a regional leader in ease of doing business.</li>



<li>Public Services: Rwanda’s digitization of public services has been a key driver of its strong performance. Systems like the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (IECMS) for the judiciary and the e-titles system for land services have streamlined processes, reducing both the time and cost of doing business. These innovations play a vital role in enhancing the overall business environment.</li>



<li>Regulatory Framework: Rwanda’s legal reforms continue to enhance its global competitiveness. Recent legislative efforts, including the 2021 Investment Promotion Law, the Company Law, and the Insolvency Law, have created a more business-friendly regulatory environment. Additionally, Rwanda’s commercial courts and streamlined processes for business registration and dispute resolution set benchmarks for the region.</li>



<li>Environmental Sustainability: The B-READY report highlights Rwanda’s leadership in integrating environmental sustainability into its business practices. Initiatives such as e-mobility and renewable energy demonstrate the country’s commitment to a green economy, positioning Rwanda as a leader in sustainable development across Africa.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rwanda-s-strategic-reforms">Rwanda’s Strategic Reforms:</h2>



Rwanda’s success in the B-READY report is attributed to its long-term reform strategy, which began in 2008 with the creation of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Over the years, Rwanda has focused on administrative, legal, and digital reforms to enhance the business environment, attract foreign direct investment (FDI), and drive economic growth.



Key reforms include:

<li>Automated tax filing and payments</li>



<li>One-stop centre services for business permits and licences</li>



<li>Support for foreign ownership and ease of profit repatriation</li>



<li>Electronic Integrated Case Management System</li>
</ul>



Rwanda’s holistic approach to reform also prioritises good governance, macroeconomic stability, and anti-corruption measures, all of which have contributed to its favourable rankings in the B-READY report.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead">Looking Ahead:</h2>



As Rwanda builds on these achievements, efforts are underway to further improve the business environment. Ongoing initiatives include the digitization of the One Stop Center, upgrades to business and mortgage registration systems, and the integration of trade services under a Single Transaction Portal.

Pinagare Mogodi’s life and professional journey can be described as resilient and visionary with an unyielding drive to break barriers.



Born with a modest background, Pinagare Mogodi was raised by his single mother, Puleng Mogodi, who juggled three jobs to provide for her children. At the same time, his uncle, Ignitius Oupa Mphomane, played a pivotal role as a mentor and father figure, introducing Mogodi to business ethics and the significance of earning respect through hard work.



His uncle’s success, wealth and influence as a businessman contrasted with Mogodi’s humble beginnings, making him feel like a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. This experience left a lasting impression and sparked Mogodi’s desire to pursue more than just financial security — he wanted freedom, respect, and the opportunity to help others.



Mogodi’s entrepreneurial journey began early in life. While still in high school, he found ways to make money by selling sweets, PlayStation games, and music CDs. His drive to succeed was evident even then, and by the time he reached his second year of university, he had already registered his first company, MAB Group (Matsapa-A-Botshelo).



The initial motivation behind the company was deeply personal — to alleviate his mother’s financial struggles. However, what began as a small operation soon grew into something far more significant.



MAB Group quickly expanded, venturing into industries that were not only highly competitive but also capital-intensive, such as mining, construction, real estate development, and trucking. Mogodi’s initial goal of helping his family gradually evolved into something much larger: he wanted MAB Group to be a symbol of success, a company that would challenge industry giants and redefine what was possible for a young, ambitious entrepreneur from humble beginnings.



Breaking into the mining industry was one of Mogodi’s biggest challenges. Mining, especially coal mining, is a sector dominated by established players with deep financial reserves and extensive industry connections.



As a young entrepreneur with limited capital, Mogodi had to overcome significant skepticism from potential clients who doubted whether MAB Group could deliver on large-scale coal exports, manage the logistics, and secure the necessary financial backing. Yet, with persistence, strategic insight, and unwavering faith in his vision, Mogodi worked to prove his doubters wrong.



He built trust with clients, demonstrating that MAB Group was not only capable of handling large projects but was also committed to quality and reliability.



Despite his success in business, Mogodi’s journey has not been without its personal struggles,which included facing financial difficulties early on. Yet, even during these challenging times, he never wavered in his commitment to building MAB Group into a respected name in the industry.

One of the most significant decisions Mogodi made along his journey was to leave school to focus fully on his growing business. It was a difficult choice, as education had always been important to him. However, as MAB Group continued to expand and become more successful, Mogodi decided to return to school to complete his studies.



His decision to return was not just for personal fulfillment — it was also motivated by a desire to set a strong example for his children, showcasing that no matter how successful one becomes, education is an essential pillar of personal growth and development. With the support of his fiancée and children, Mogodi is now pursuing his academic goals while continuing to lead MAB Group to new heights.



Under Mogodi’s leadership, MAB Group has evolved into a multifaceted organization with a diverse portfolio. The company’s mining division offers a range of services, from exploration and extraction to processing and export, all while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and community involvement. In the construction sector, MAB Group has taken on large-scale residential, commercial, and industrial projects, contributing to South Africa’s infrastructure development. Additionally, the company’s trucking services ensure efficient transportation of goods across the country, further solidifying its position as a key player in the logistics industry.



Beyond its business success, MAB Group is deeply committed to community development and social responsibility. Mogodi’s belief in the importance of uplifting the communities where the company operates is reflected in MAB Group’s numerous initiatives. The company offers internship and learnership programs that equip individuals with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. It also supports local businesses and promotes economic growth in the areas where it operates. For Mogodi, giving back to the community is not just an obligation, it’s a core part of his company’s mission.



Throughout his 14-year journey, one of the key lessons Mogodi has learned is the power of strategic partnerships. These alliances have been instrumental in MAB Group’s growth, providing the financial strength and industry expertise necessary to scale operations and enter new markets. By partnering with other companies, MAB Group has been able to mitigate risk, innovate, and expand its reach, both locally and globally.



The company has significantly expanded its coal export operations, handling between 75,000 and 150,000 tons of coal. It is also in the process of developing new coal and chrome mines, with plans to complete a state-of-the-art wash plant by 2025.



In the construction sector, MAB Group has been involved in major projects such as Rama City, a large-scale development, and several public-private partnerships with the government. Despite facing challenges like debt and the economic impact of Covid-19, Mogodi has guided the company through these turbulent times.



Looking to the future, Mogodi remains optimistic about the prospects for South Africa’s mining, construction, and logistics industries. He believes that the country’s new Government of National Unity (GNU) has the potential to drive economic improvement, despite challenges such as disruptions in rail infrastructure and port logistics etc. For Mogodi, these challenges represent opportunities for growth and innovation, and he is confident that MAB Group will continue to thrive by adhering to ethical business practices.



Mogodi’s vision for MAB Group extends far beyond business success. He sees the company becoming one of Africa’s largest mining and exporting houses, with a mission to help reduce unemployment across the continent.



His focus on strategic expansion, innovation, and sustainability reflects his commitment to creating lasting change, not only for his company but for Africa as a whole.

From Start To Scale: A South African Entrepreneur’s Foray Into Mining, Construction And More

In September 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa, led a State Visit to China. The visit was aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership between South Africa and China and coincided with the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) 2024 Summit.



Established in 2000 and consisting of 53 African countries, FOCAC is a key platform for fostering collaboration and cooperation between African countries and China in areas such as trade, investment, infrastructure, and development. It also extends to address global issues such as the reform of international governance, peace, and security, all of which is done through a consultative process that aims to promote cooperation between China and Africa.



Specific to 2024, the FOCAC Summit resulted in the signing of several bilateral agreements covering areas such as industrialization, trade, technology, and agricultural modernization.

One of the core themes of FOCAC 2024 was industrialization, a key priority for African nations as they seek to transform their economies from resource-dependent to value-added industries. Through FOCAC, China has been a crucial partner in supporting Africa’s industrialization agenda, providing investment, technology, and infrastructure to facilitate the growth of sectors such as manufacturing, energy, and agriculture.



China’s investments in Africa’s industrial sector align with the goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which emphasizes inclusive economic growth and industrial transformation as drivers of development.



In the last two decades, China’s FDI into Africa has increased, peaking at $5b in 2022. This amount, which represents about 4.4% of the Continent’s FDI has mainly been focused on manufacturing – a key driver to Africa’s industrialization agenda (Institute for Global Dialogue,2023)



South Africa has benefitted from this FDI, with the country being a major recipient of Chinese investment. It is, however, understood that this FDI has mainly been in the primary sectors of natural resources.&nbsp; FOCAC 2024 highlighted the importance of changing this with more finished goods being exported to China.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-south-africa-china-s-trade">Balancing South Africa-China’s Trade</h2>

Whilst trade between China and Africa has grown significantly (increasing from $11.67 billion in 2000 to $257.67 billion by 2022), it is understood and agreed that the imbalance in trade must be addressed.



Specific to South Africa, during 2022, the country exported $23.4 billion worth of products to China, while China’s exports to South Africa amounted to $23.5 billion. The primary exports from South Africa to China were natural resources, including gold, which accounted for $8.85 billion, followed by diamonds at $3.36 billion and platinum at $1.83 billion. In contrast, China’s exports to South Africa were predominantly manufactured goods, featuring broadcasting equipment valued at $1.78 billion, computers at $1.04 billion, and electric batteries at $777 million (South African Revenue Service, 2023).



According to a joint statement released by the governments of South Africa and China during FOCAC 2024, the two countries agreed to elevate their partnership into a comprehensive strategic cooperative relationship focused on balancing trade, a key input into industrialization, technological innovation, and sustainable growth. In respect of the latter, South Africa’s investment opportunities in the renewable energy, green hydrogen as well as energy storage, all of which have been identified as sunrise sectors with the potential to massively contribute to South Africa’s GDP and job creation capabilities were highlighted as areas of investment by the South African government.



This is because of China’s proven track record in these areas; presently China is the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen.&nbsp; It is also at the forefront of electric vehicles and battery production with its electric vehicles already making headway in Europe. This fast-evolving sector provides an opportunity not just for South Africa, but the Continent as a whole, given the natural endowments found in Africa and their essential input into the production of fuel cell and electric vehicles as well as green hydrogen. In order for this opportunity to be realized and more importantly, for the opportunity to translate into the growth prospects envisaged for the Continent and the country, a market such as China is key in supporting South Africa’s ambition to realize its green technology capabilities. Without a doubt, forums such as the FOCAC are of benefit to South Africa in accessing the Chinese market, not just from an investment perspective but from a consumption market as well.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-re-drawing-and-leveling-the-playing-field-2025-2027-focac-plan">Re-drawing and Leveling the Playing Field: -2025-2027 FOCAC Plan</h2>

The 2024 FOCAC Plan was shortened from six years to three years. This is in support of the desire to accelerate modernization and industrialization in Africa as well as the objective to reduce the trade imbalance between China and the Continent.



To also ensure effective implementation of the desired co-operation between China and Africa, 10 key measures or areas of co-operation have been defined. All of the areas are beneficial and can if implemented effectively, contribute to the Continent’s sustainable growth.



Amongst others, the 2025-2027 FOCAC Plan aims to create research centers across Africa to enhance training of African Leaders. The Plan has also set its goals on eliminating tariffs for products from least developed countries, helping African countries to expand their agricultural exports and digital trade platforms. The establishment of industrial parks across 5 regions in Africa is also a target, as is infrastructure development, health care improvement, rural revitalization, security, and green development. To support all of this, China has pledged some $49b in financial support to be accessed in different ways, including credit lines or development assistance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-positioning-south-africa-to-benefit-from-focac">Positioning South Africa to benefit from FOCAC</h2>



During the State Visit undertaken alongside the 2024 FOCAC Summit, President Cyril Ramaphosa called for a narrowing of the trade deficit with China. For South Africa to enhance its trade arrangements with China as well as its access to set-aside FDI, it is argued that the country’s SEZ programme be integrated into priority trade and development areas identified for the country.



Leveraging the SEZ programme will ensure that a comparative advantage for FDI coming through from China can access the SEZ incentive framework, leading to increased investment.



The OR Tambo International Airport SEZ is well positioned to play a central role in this, in lieu of its competitive location next to Africa’s largest and busiest Airport and its development trajectory wherein it has already identified and packaged for investment uptake, opportunities in sectors such as the pharmaceutical and medical sectors as well as the green economy.&nbsp;



The SEZ also has infrastructure development opportunities that support regional development where the SEZ is located, ensuring modernization of the OR Tambo International Airport Economic Node and its continued position as a world-class business location with accessibility and connectivity to different parts of the world.
