Biases and gender stereotypes steering women and girls away from science related field, thus we have fewer women biologists, physicists, Mathematicians and engineering professionals. Yet women strive to surmount and participate in the science field, and they have made huge success overtime. The Libyan women are no exception and today the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), with the women’s Empowerment Unit at the Government of National Accord (GNA), celebrate the achievements of the Libyan women, represented by four women scientists and pioneers in their fields. UNSMIL will work hand in hand with the Libyan women to create more venues for their progress and development and to support and achieve the agreed development goals including the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. UNSMIL congratulates all Libyan women on the International Day of Women and Girls in science, and commemorate them for their scientific achievement. We congratulate Ms. Nagat Elsadig, member of the British Royal fellowship in Clinical Biochemistry, Dr. Fatin Abdulhameed the first dean of the faculty of Medicine at Tripoli University, Ms. Rania Rahoma, Aviation engineer, and Dr. Khiryia Ohida, the professor at the university of Sirte and who was awarded The World Award 2020 on oncology and Medicine, for their sound contribution to science and their efforts to stimulate other women to join and prosper in the science field. Global Interjapan (Kenya) Limited is a civil engineering company registered in Kenya. An investigation conducted by the Bank’s Office of Integrity and Anti-Corruption established that Global Interjapan (Kenya) Limited engaged in fraudulent practices during a tender for the Bank-financed Small Scale Irrigation and Value Addition Project in Kenya. The debarment renders Global Interjapan (Kenya) Limited and its affiliates ineligible to participate in Bank Group-financed projects during the debarment period. Additionally, the debarment qualifies for cross-debarment by other multilateral development banks under the Agreement for Mutual Enforcement of Debarment Decisions, including the Asian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank Group. The power sector accounts for up to 41 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions today, with Africa contributing about 2-3%. In parallel, there are still over 580 million people on the continent who do not have access to reliable energy and the demand for electricity is expected to continue to grow as populations increase, industrialization ambitions grow and urbanization continues to fuel the need for more power. To address sustainability concerns, the world is transitioning towards a lower carbon energy mix at a pace unseen before. This is reflected in the total global value of energy transition investment – including spend on new renewable energy capacity, electric vehicles and associated charging infrastructure, energy storage technologies, and more &#8211; reaching over US$500 billion (https://bit.ly/3be1TUv) for the first time in 2020. This was an increase of 9 percent over the previous year, despite the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while renewables are growing rapidly, increases are not occurring fast enough, and they are still projected to provide less than half of global electricity supply by 2040. “As Sub-Saharan Africa balances the need for more access to power with the drive for transition to cleaner energy sources, the accelerated and strategic deployment of renewable and gas power together can deliver a no-regrets path to make substantive reductions in emissions quickly, while delivering dependable, affordable power,” says Elisee Sezan, CEO of GE Gas Power Sub-Saharan Africa. Gas also provides dependable, dispatchable capacity that is available regardless of the time of day, season, or weather; this is critical for grid stability as very high renewables penetration can lead to system instability. Download logoMalawi’s Sustainable Development Goals Acceleration Fund (SDG-AF) was set up in 2019 by the Government of Malawi, development partners, and the United Nations (UN) to accelerate progress towards national attainment of the SDGs. At its meeting on February 5, the Fund’s Steering Committee, co-chaired by the Secretary to Treasury Mr. Chauncy Simwaka and the UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Maria Jose Torres, endorsed three Joint Programmes that address the core of national priorities, decentralizing implementation to the district level and ensuring services reach the last mile. Each programme is multisectoral and involves multiple government ministries and UN agencies, focusing on girls’ education, building resilient livelihoods for the poor and vulnerable, and improving access to basic healthcare. The combined budget of the three Joint Programmes for the next four years is US$130 million (about MK101 billion). These programmes are financially supported by the Fund, thanks to the contributions of its donors: United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, Flanders, Ireland, Romania and the UN. “These programmes represent strategic partnerships between the Government of Malawi, including local authorities and communities, and the UN, thanks to the support of development partners in a step towards accelerating the SDG agenda in the next 10 years as outlined in Malawi 2063 Vision,” said Simwaka. At the meeting, the Committee activated the Fund’s Humanitarian Window to help tackle the second wave of COVID-19 in support of the Government Response Plan. Through the window, the Fund has allocated an additional MK3 billion to support national efforts to fight COVID-19. “The new contribution, this time thanks to support from Canada, will strengthen Malawi’s response to tackle the pandemic and its adverse socio-economic effects by ensuring that vulnerable groups such as women and girls are not left behind in the response,” said Torres. At the meeting, Canada was welcomed as a new donor to the Fund, while the chairs highlighted the important support from Norway and the United Kingdom to implement the three approved Joint Programmes. Senior Government representatives who attended the meeting came from the Ministry of Finance; Ministry of Economic Planning, Development and Public Sector Reform; Office of the President and Cabinet; Ministry of Local Government; National Planning Commission; Department of Disaster Management Affairs; Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Health. Download logoPresident Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday afternoon led the Kenyan nation in bidding farewell to Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji whose body was interred at Langata Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi County. Speaking at the burial ceremony that was also attended by Deputy President Dr William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the President eulogized Senator Haji as an outstanding leader who served the country with commitment throughout his life. “I am here to convey my personal message of condolence to the family, relatives and friends of Mzee Haji. “The death of Mzee Haji is a big loss not only to his family which has lost a father, a brother and a husband but also the whole nation which has lost a brave leader, a leader who stood for fairness and justice for all the people of Kenya,&#8221; the President said. The Head of State said he had received messages of condolence from leaders of neighbouring states, appreciating the role Senator Haji played in restoring peace and stability in their countries. President Kenyatta, who had earlier attended the burial of former Cabinet Secretary Simeon Nyachae in Kisii, said Senator Haji was a good role model to upcoming leaders across the country. “At a personal level, Mzee Haji has walked with me throughout my political life and I benefitted immensely from his advice. “We shall miss his words of wisdom and his devotion to serving the people of Kenya without asking for anything in return,” President Kenyatta said. One hundred thirty seven patients have been diagnosed positive for COVID-19 in tests carried out today at Quarantine Centers and OPD Services in the Southern, Central, Anseba, and Northern Red Sea Regions. Out of these, ninety eight patients are from Quarantine Centers in Mendefera (38), Adi Quala (31), Mai-Mine (10), Mai-Aini (7), Senafe (7), Enda Ghiorghis (3), and Dibarwa (2) in the Southern Region.  Twenty nine patients are from Quarantine Centers (16), an OPD Services (13) in Asmara; Central Region.  Eighteen patients are from Quarantine Centers in Keren, Anseba Region; while one patient is from Massawa, Northern Red Sea Region. On the other hand, eighty six patients who have been receiving medical treatment in hospitals in the Southern Region (78), Anseba Region (5), and, Central Region (3), have recovered fully and have been discharged from these facilities. The total number of recovered patients to-date has accordingly risen to 1,914 while the number of deaths stands at seven. Download logoThe United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a US$1.6 million (JPY 178 million) contribution from the Government of Japan to provide much-needed food assistance to vulnerable people in the Central African Republic, amid a deepening humanitarian crisis. Japan’s contribution will enable WFP to provide life-saving assistance to nearly 66,000 people in communities hard hit by the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic and the uptick in conflict following late-December elections. ‘’The socio-economic impact of COVID-19 has left more people unable to meet their basic food needs,” said WFP CAR Country Director, Peter Schaller. “WFP is grateful to the Government of Japan for this contribution, which comes amidst growing humanitarian needs due to recent post-electoral violence which uprooted hundreds of vulnerable people from their homes, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic.” An estimated 2.8 million people —more than half the country’s population—will need humanitarian assistance this year. As the country’s longstanding conflict resurges, adding to the impact of COVID-19, more people risk falling into acute hunger without food assistance.  CAR is also facing serious food shortages, as violence cuts off the landlocked country’s traditional supply routes and leaves food convoys stranded outside its borders. This is driving up prices of basic food commodities, with costs of staples like oil, meat, and onions up by more than 50 percent. ‘’Given the worsening humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic, Japan understands that more and more people are depending on the support and solidarity of the international community. We hope that this contribution from Japan will help WFP reach those affected by the crisis,’’ said Tsutomu Osawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Central African Republic. WFP currently provides monthly food and nutrition assistance to some 800,000 people. Given the mounting needs, however, it urgently requires US$ 63.8 million to scale up and support nearly one million people over the next six months. Download logoFollowing a Press Release from the Government of the Republic of Guinea on Sunday, February 14, 2021, confirming seven reported cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) including three deaths, HE Retired Brig. Julius Maada Bio, instructed the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to inform the general public that even though there are no reported cases of EVD in Sierra Leone, the government should take prudent action to prevent any introduction of the virus into the country and to institute measures to protect the lives of Sierra Leoneans. The government of Sierra Leone has activated its Health Emergency Response System to level II (Enhanced Surveillance, Active Case Finding and robust Community Engagement). The Ministry of Health and Sanitation wishes to assure the general public that we will build on our expertise and experience to mount a solid response that not only prevents the reintroduction of Ebola into the country but should the virus be introduced, have a strong system that protects the lives of all Sierra Leoneans and interrupts the transmission of the virus. With the border with the Republic of Guinea currently closed, Health Authorities and local stakeholders in the districts bordering Guinea and Sierra Leone have been supported to heighten Ebola surveillance, and improve community awareness including appropriate preparedness measures. National Rapid Response Teams are being dispatched to provide additional support to the District Health Management Teams. We intend to work very closely with our Guinean counterparts to quickly contain the situation. EVD is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. The virus is suspected to be transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. It can be transmitted through human contact with body fluids of a person infected with the virus. Major symptoms of the disease can include some of the following: fever, sometimes unexplained bleeding tendencies from nose, gums, vagina, skin or eyes, as well as vomiting and diarrhea. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation wishes to encourage the general public to be vigilant and report all suspected cases and deaths through the 117 toll-free hotline or to their local authorities. The Government of Sierra Leone intends to collaborate very closely with all our local, regional, and international partners especially partners of the Mano River Union.
