Harvard’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) announced today that it will continue to provide a wide range of research opportunities and programming through its Tunisia Office for a further six years, supported by a $2 million gift from Harvard alumnus Hazem Ben-Gacem ’92. The office, which opened its doors in Tunis in January 2017 with the support of an initial gift from Ben-Gacem (https://bit.ly/2YkSZ1g), provides students and scholars with a bridge to renowned Tunisian archival facilities, serves as an incubator for analysis of the evolving social, cultural, legal, and political movements in the region, and offers an intellectual hub for scholars of, and from, Tunisia, the Maghreb, the Mediterranean, and the wider Middle East region.

The Tunisia Office offers a platform for Harvard University students and faculty to learn about and engage with Tunisia and the broader Middle East and to further their scholarly work on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, the Arabic language, and the many civilizations that have crossed North Africa for centuries. Since its founding, the office has hosted approximately 100 Harvard University students and faculty.
“Broadening the contexts in which teaching, learning, and research happen at Harvard is a crucial element of the University’s engagement around the world. I am confident that, building on the strong foundation it has put in place over the last few years, the Tunis Office of CMES will continue to provide valuable resources for Harvard students and scholars and to furnish exciting opportunities for collaboration with local partners that will shape important work across fields and disciplines,” said Harvard Vice Provost of International Affairs Mark Elliott. “We are truly grateful for the very generous support of Hazem Ben-Gacem, which makes all this possible for the Harvard community.”
Programs available at the Tunisia Office include Harvard Tunisia Scholarships for Harvard graduate and undergraduate research, funding for Harvard faculty sabbatical research, an Arabic language summer program for Harvard graduate and undergraduate students, a three-week Wintersession course for Harvard students, and an array of topical workshops, conferences, and lectures.
Recent special initiatives at the Tunisia Office include Rediscovering Tunisia’s Interwar Literary Milieu, a digital humanities project in collaboration with the National Documentation Center, the National Archives of Tunisia, and the National Library of Tunisia; and #After Lockdown: Very Short Stories about Enduring a Global Pandemic, an animated film that premiered as part of Worldwide Week at Harvard 2020 and presents personal narratives collected by the Tunisia Office and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece during the summer of 2020.
Founded in 1954, CMES supports research and teaching on a broad range of topics related to the Middle East and North Africa. Generations of scholars have graduated from its degree programs, bringing a deepened understanding of the Middle East to careers that include academia, government, business, journalism, and law.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, concluded today their visit to Sierra Leone and Cabo Verde.

The joint visit is part of the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) continued partnership to support the countries of the sub-region address peace, security and development challenges. It also aims at enhancing cooperation with the two organizations.
During their visit to Freetown on Monday 25 January, the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Special Representative were received by H.E. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone with whom they discussed a range of national and regional issues, including the post-COVID recovery plans.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Special Representative commended the government and the people of Sierra Leone for their tireless efforts towards strengthening the reconciliation process, which will help deepen peace and democracy in the country. They praised Sierra Leone’s commitment for enhancing the space for women’s participation in all spheres of society and governance through greater protections against domestic violence and sexual offences, gender equality and free education.
 In Praia, the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Special Representative had a meeting with the Prime Minister, José Ulisses Correia e Silva, and were received by H.E Jorge Carlos Fonseca, President of Cabo Verde. With both the Prime Minister and the President of Cabo Verde, they discussed various issues relating to the regional and national situation, including the preparations for the upcoming legislative and presidential elections, and the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
 Moussa Faki and Mohamed Ibn Chambas commended the government and the people of Cabo Verde for their continued commitment to peace and democracy. They applauded the accomplishments made in advancing effective equality of rights and duties between men and women through the adoption of the parity law which contributes to the consolidation of social justice and development in the country, and places Cabo Verde as an example of democracy in West Africa.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, reiterated the AU-UN joint engagement to continue to support Sierra Leone and Cabo Verde as part of the April 2017 joint AU-UN framework agreement for an enhanced partnership.

69 people have tested positive to the disease, out of a sample size of 2,814 tested in the last 24 hours. The total confirmed positive cases are now 100,052. The cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,158,920. From the cases 56 are Kenyans while 17 are foreigners.

Nairobi has 49, Kitui 9, Mombasa 2, Machakos 1, Busia 1, Garissa 1, Kajiado 1, Kisumu 1, Kwale 1, Meru 1, Trans Nzoia 1, and Uasin Gishu 1.

449 patients have recovered from the disease. 269 from our various facilities while 180 are from the Home-Based Isolation and Care. The total recoveries now stand at 83,418. No deaths reported therefore our fatality remains 1,744.

506 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,469 are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 25 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 13 of whom are on ventilatory support and 11 on supplemental oxygen. 1 patient is under observation.

17 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 10 of them in the general wards. 7 patients are in the High Dependency Unit.

The thirty fourth (34th) Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) scheduled to take place on 6 and 7 February 2021 will hold under the theme: “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”. This theme of the year will be presented during the upcoming African Union Summit, by the lead Department of Social Affairs at the AUC. However, it is worth noting that, Africa is universally recognised for its rich arts and cultural diversity given that, African cultural heritage springs from different communities all over Africa. Therefore, cultural heritage, which is seen as an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values, will for the next twelve months, be at the centre of discussion in most events organised by the African Union.

African heritage is keen on the moral values while African culture is expressed in its arts and crafts, folklore and religion, clothing, cuisine, music and languages, etc. Expressions of culture are abundant within Africa, with large amounts of cultural diversity being found not only across different countries but also within single countries. Consequently, the African Union (AU) has recognised the role arts, culture and heritage can play as catalysts for the socio-economic development and integration of the African continent. To that effect, the preservation of valued African property such as historic buildings, artwork, books/manuscripts and other artefacts that have been passed down from previous generations, will take central stage henceforth as the AU strives to uphold these values by dedicating an entire year of 2021 to ‘Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want’.
The proposed theme of the year 2021 draws inspiration in the African Union Agenda 2063, as a shared strategic framework and blueprint for inclusive growth and sustainable Development; Aspiration 05 envisages:
 	An Africa with a Strong Cultural Identity, Values and Ethics; 	Strengthening the African cultural identity, values and ethics as a critical factor for Africa’s emergence on the global stage. 	African people imbued with a sense of their fundamental cultural unity, a sense of a common destiny and African identity and Pan-African consciousness. 	An Africa where work is a key ethic and value, where women play an important role, and in which traditional and religious leaders, including the youth as drivers of change, is recognized. 
Worth recalling that, from the onset, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and, thereafter its successor the African Union (AU), has placed culture at the top of their agenda, as stipulated in the OAU Charter, which affirms the commitment of the African Union Member States to ensure the coordination and harmonisation of their policies, in the domain of educational and cultural cooperation, among others. The significant contribution of culture to the integration of societies and to the socio-economic development in general and to poverty alleviation through job creation and social inclusion in particular has been undoubtedly evident. This reiterates why the AU has not only included culture in all major development blue prints, such as the Lagos Plan of Action 1980-2000 and the African Union Agenda 2063; but it has also adopted various instruments pertaining to culture including the Cultural Charter for Africa (1978), the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance (2006), the Statute of the African Audio-Visual and Cinema Commission (2019) and the African Union (AU) Model Law on the Protection of Cultural Property and Heritage (2018), among others.
According to H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission, the AU’s theme of the Year 2021 ““Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”, is an important theme and goes hand in hand with the whole movement for the institutional reform of the Union, “as culture is the main marker of identity and through it we know who we really are”. The AUC Chairperson was speaking while addressing the virtual official opening of the 41st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), on 20 January 2021.
Meanwhile, the 38th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council is scheduled to take place on 3 and 4 February 2021. This meeting will bring together Ministers of External Relations/ Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from the fifty five (55) Member States of the African Union.

Mr. Ayman Amin Sejiny, the CEO of the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) (www.ICD-ps.org), the private sector arm of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and Mr. Amur Safaraliyevich Djalilov, the CEO of SQB Securities LLC (www.SQBS.uz), signed a MoU for the development of Islamic finance and capital markets in Uzbekistan.

The MoU will cover the following areas of cooperation:
 	Conduct selective training courses on Islamic finance and its products and services for local banks and financial institutions in Uzbekistan; 	Introduce Islamic finance instruments such as Sukuk and other instruments; 	Attract potential international financial institutions to Uzbekistan market; 	Attract Shari’ah-compliant debt financing for potential projects in Uzbekistan; 
Mr. Sejiny stressed the importance of the MoU in increasing capacity-building, promoting knowledge-sharing and supporting greater sustainable access to finance across ICD member countries. Mr. Sejiny commented “Providing assistance to the development of the Islamic finance industry has always been among our top priorities. We look forward to pursuing and intensifying this effort to better tackle Uzbekistan’s needs to develop innovative, robust and competitive financial systems at both domestic and regional levels.” Mr. Sejiny added:  ”We will further strengthen our cooperation in promoting sustainable growth and attracting financing for the projects in Uzbekistan.” 
On his part, Mr. Djalilov added: ”The Islamic finance and Shari’ah-compliant instruments have a huge potential in the market today and we believe that our capital markets will benefit from them which will be alternative opportunity to conventional financial instruments and to attract new investments.”

African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) President Akinwuma A. Adesina announced the launch on Monday of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) to mobilize $25 billion to scale up and accelerate climate change adaptation actions across Africa. The announcement came during the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) 2021, hosted by the government of the Netherlands and the Global Center on Adaptation.

The AAAP, a joint initiative between the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation, is expected to scale up innovative and transformative actions on climate adaptation across Africa, Adesina said during the inaugural Ministerial Dialogue on Adaptation Action, held as part of the summit.
 “Our ambition is bold: to galvanize climate resilience actions; support countries to accelerate and scale up climate adaptation and resilience; and mobilize financing at scale for climate adaptation in Africa,” the Bank chief said.
Adesina was joined in addressing the summit by Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte, 8th UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (https://bit.ly/3qQ5jCY), UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. World Bank president David Malpass and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also spoke.
The ongoing COVID-19 crisis formed a backdrop to the meeting, a fact Prime Minister Rutte acknowledged in his opening statement. The Netherlands has taken a lead role globally in harnessing the energy and entrepreneurship of the youth and developing nature-based solutions.
 “I hope that 2021 will be a year of heightened international ambition and action on climate change, after a difficult 2020, and this conference will help achieve that goal,” Rutte said.
Acknowledging the “huge gaps” remaining in financing for adaptation in developing countries, the UN Secretary General called for 50% of all climate finance provided by developed countries and multilateral development Banks to be allocated to adaptation and resilience in developing countries, noting,  “the African Development Bank set the bar in 2019 by allocating over half of its climate financing to adaptation.”
A number of speakers acknowledged Africa’s vulnerability to climate change, as well as Africans’ innovative responses to challenges.
Ghanaian president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the country was working with the private sector with the assistance of the Green Climate Fund, “to establish a multimillion-dollar green fund to support our climate adaptation interventions and our efforts to transition to renewable energy.”
Adesina thanked Ban Ki Moon for his role in the establishment of GCA’s regional office for Africa in Abidjan last year, which is hosted by the Bank. The African Development Bank head participated in three sessions and outlined a number of Bank initiatives, including the $20 billion Desert to Power project to create a solar zone in the Sahel, the largest in the world. 
“Our Youth Adaptation flagship will unlock $3 billion for the youth, support 10,000 youth-led SMEs in climate resilience, and build capacity for one million youth on climate adaptation,” Adesina said. 
The Bank’s TAAT initiative has leveraged $450 million and provided 19 million farmers in 27 countries with climate resilient agricultural technologies, raising average yields by 60%.
Adesina also acknowledged that the presence of John Kerry, U.S. special envoy for climate, provided a boost to global climate efforts. “With you in charge, and the strong and palpable leadership of President Biden, we are reenergized on the global agenda on climate change,” Adesina said.
The Climate Adaptation Summit, held annually, aims to answer Secretary-General Guterres call for more concrete plans and more ambition from more countries and more businesses to make the world more climate resilient.

The International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) (www.ITFC-IDB.org), member of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, has approved a US$15 million Murabaha Financing Facility in favour of Prime Bank Limited, Bangladesh to facilitate cross-border import transactions of the bank’s private sector businesses, particularly SMEs.

Prime Bank and ITFC signed the financing agreement to boost the rebounding of SMEs in readiness to the return to growth post pandemic. ITFC is continuously expanding its financing outreach to the private sector through local banks in Bangladesh. The financing comes at a critical time as SMEs in Bangladesh and other OIC member countries are currently recovering from the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are very delighted to conclude the Murabaha Trade Financing agreement with International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation which will expand our trade finance capacity.  The support from ITFC has strategic value and significance as it comes at a time when businesses are striving to make a comeback from the fallout of the prevailing pandemic. The arrangement will be greatly beneficial for our SME and Corporate segments. This unique solution will strengthen the existing bilateral relationship with ITFC and other member organizations of Islamic Development Bank.” said Faisal Rahman, Acting Managing Director and CEO of Prime Bank.
