Entrepreneur, investor, keynote speaker and author, Musa Kalenga is one of eight speakers at BizTrends2021 online &#8211; Towards New Norths &#038; New Narratives on Thursday, 28 January 2021.

With many titles to his name, Kalenga is the CEO of Bridge Labs, as well a shareholder and a board member at The Brave Group and Loxyion Conexyion. He was the first chairman of the Youth Advertising Board of South Africa in 2005/6 and also currently holds the position of Chairman of the School of Consumer and Information Sciences Industry Advisory Board at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). He is also the author of Ladders &#038; Trampolines, a book that shares anecdotes and experiences about growing up in Southern Africa, as well as working and doing business all over the continent.
I catch up with Kalenga to chat about his passion for Africa, technology and humanity ahead of BizTrends2021 online &#8211; Towards New Norths &#038; New Narratives.
Your background lies in adapting technology for social good. How and when did your interest in tech begin?
As far as I can remember I have always been interested in solving problems for the continent. Initially this was by ensuring that we used the minds of young people to give a new and fresh perspective. This organically evolved into the use of technology as a means to engage young people and solve problems.
Back in 2009, in one of my first business ventures &#8211; Monatefellaz, we conducted some experiential research using closed Facebook groups as a way to engage, track and gather data on young people within a certain research cohort. This was the beginning of my appreciation of the scale and impact that technology could have.
In your opinion, what is the state of tech innovation in South Africa?
Using the Gartner Hype Cycle as a reference, the various industries are at different stages of maturity.
“On average, I think most are between the “Technology Trigger” and “The Tough of disillusionment.””
The technology trigger is super early stage and in fact likely not internal innovation, but innovation forced by external changes in the market &#8211; i.e Covid-19. At this stage the expectations of technology generally are unrealistic and not achievable. This stage leads to a flurry of activity and panic driven decision-making and often ends in tears. The Trough of disillusionment is the outcome of knee-jerk reactions to innovation and in South Africa many companies feel “duped” or let down by the promise of innovation.
From your point of view, what are the opportunities and challenges for tech in Africa?
In almost every sector, there are massive opportunities.
“The problem in Africa is about a systematic approach to unlock the opportunity”
Based on the Gartner Hype Cycle, most companies will struggle to capture a market opportunity because of a lack of skill and foresight.
With your passion for the African continent, what can be done to widen digital inclusion and STEM education in Africa?
I think the basics need to be put in place. We need a new crop of educators with a high level of digital literacy skills. This will transform their appreciation of what technology can do for learners and to enhance the classroom experience.
“STEM remains an important opportunity around the building blocks of a competent population of the future and much more can be done to support alternative ways of learning STEM subjects.”
There is also an opportunity for a narrow, much more intense focus on STEM-only curriculum. There may be an argument of reduced cost and hyper focus on these core subjects.
As an entrepreneur and investor, what are the trends that you are starting to see in the ecosystem?
“In marketing and advertising, programmatic marketing as well as performance marketing will be increasingly valuable for marketers and brands. Both are areas of marketing that can create and deliver immense value.”
Artificial intelligence across almost every sector is becoming a key topic to debate and discuss. This begins by operationalising AI in organisations starting with data strategy, but also more importantly &#8211; the “softer issues” like ethics in the field of AI.
You&#39;ve been described as a marketer of the future. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the marketing and media industry at the moment?
A lack of skills in critical thinking, creative and the application of digital literacy.
There is also a gaping hole regarding “policy formulation” with regards to all of the above on industry bodies.
The curriculum that marketing students are exposed to also needs to evolve to meet the new market demands.

Paule Ella Guei has had to overcome many challenges on her journey to becoming a referee for the Ivorian Rugby Union (FIR). Laughed at for officiating men’s games, she had to develop a thick skin &#8211; and was rewarded for her efforts by being selected as a Rugby Africa (www.RugbyAfrique.com) ambassador, and one of 12 Unstoppables on the continent.

Now, Guei has an even greater accolade to her name, with the distinction of an Ivorian Sports Awards Sports+ recognising her efforts to develop rugby in Côte d&#39;Ivoire.

“This award is the proof of the hard work we put in every day for the promotion of gender through rugby,” says Guei. “It is a symbol of the recognition of women&#39;s rugby as a discipline to be supported and included into all athletic activities and events. With this award, we have succeeded in positioning women&#39;s rugby, which used to go unnoticed, into the list of sports that are worth keeping an eye on in Ivory Coast.”

Breaking down barriers
The award marks the end of a challenging but triumphant year for the dedicated ambassador who refused to let even the disruption of a global pandemic put a stop to her mission to break down stereotypes.

When lockdown restrictions relegated sporting activities to online and personal training programs, Guei also used the opportunity to advance and prepare for a groundbreaking national &#8220;Break Down Barriers, Experience the World of Rugby&#8221; tour.

The tour, initiated in collaboration with the Ivorian Rugby Federation, is an extension of the highly successful Ivory Coast Rugby Project, which promotes the development of women rugby players in Ivory Coast.

The ‘Break Down Barriers’ tour has several objectives that include and go beyond promoting and supporting women’s rugby, with a focus on advancing the conditions that will allow the women and girls to indulge their passion for the sport. These include recognising and responding to the challenges experienced by the various clubs, providing guidance and creating a climate of trust to stimulate social interactions.

“This tour definitely has had a considerable impact on the girls, because many of them have been able to better deal with the gender stereotypes women in rugby face every day,” affirms Guei. The success of the tour, she adds, is evident in the increase in the number of registered players and the girls’ expressed desire to meet with officials again. “In their eyes, we are a source of inspiration, motivation and self-esteem. Their feedback has truly moved us and pushes us to work harder, and to devote ourselves to the project even more. What a great victory!” she enthuses.

Raising profiles, platforms and possibilities
Guei believes her drive and commitment is accelerated by being an Unstoppable, which has considerably raised her profile and platform. “Being an Unstoppable and an ambassador for women&#39;s rugby allowed me to figure out what I was really capable of and how far I could go. It is truly wonderful to realise that we can do things beyond what we think or even begin to imagine,” she explains.

“Moreover, our voice is now heard and taken more seriously, not only when it comes to decisions related to the women&#39;s commission at the FIR, but also with our professional activities and in our community. We are also constantly getting approached by the media, which allowed us to gain more visibility as we strive to promote gender through rugby.”

Guei’s voice will no doubt be further amplified in 2021, following the mid-January announcement that she has been co-opted on the Communication &#038; Public Relations sub-committee of Rugby Africa’s Women’s Advisory Committee.

This, along with the Sports+ Award, will help magnify and enhance her union’s visibility in 2021 and beyond, she believes. “We will experience a major breakthrough as we are now attracting a lot of attention, especially with the Ivory Coast Rugby project, which really highlights women&#39;s rugby. And I believe that anything positive that is spoken or written about women&#39;s rugby will bring us more visibility and will be beneficial, as we hope to further accelerate our growth.”

Unlimited ambitions
&#8220;Break Down Barriers, Experience the World of Rugby&#8221; kicked off in Abidjan in November, and completed the fifth phase in northern Korhogo on January 16.

Guei is not only committed to continuing the tour in 2021, she also has ambitious plans to advance the cause of women’s rugby in her country with a number of enterprising initiatives.

These include:
 	Creating an association that will bring together all female rugby fans and enthusiasts 	Encouraging the practice of women&#39;s rugby in schools (Elementary, middle, and high school) 	Supporting and offering expertise to major projects being carried out by the FIR: the organisation of the women&#39;s national championship, the establishment of the Ivoire Seven League (girls will be treated equally to men), the Medi&#39;Sept campaign (a R7 tournament coupled with a health campaign), as well as our involvement in the women&#39;s national selection for international tournaments 	Increasing the visibility of FIR initiatives on social media 
Her primary source of motivation is love and passion for the sport, she says. “It unites and empowers us all; there is also this shared purpose to build something great at the service of others, especially women.”

Guei’s message to women interested in rugby? “We urge them to break away and dismiss gender stereotypes, come and experience this sport because it is filled with so many amazing values that will allow them to face whatever life brings their way. Women deserve the same rights as men. Define your goals and give yourself the means to achieve them.

“We are waiting for you!”

Women’s Ruby in Africa: On the African continent, women’s rugby has seen tremendous growth. In the last decade it increased from 50 000 female players in 2012, to over 260 000 in 2018.  For this tremendous growth to continue, strong leadership in women’s rugby needs to continue, the Women’s Executive Leadership Scholarship is one of the tools that will enable this.   
Africa will also be well represented when South Africa participates in the next rugby World Cup women in New Zealand in 2021 and Kenya in the Olympic Games.

It’s that kind of massive change of are you selling the right thing to the right people and where are they are and what do they need.&#8221;

‘I have always been guided by the belief that the African Union Committee (AUC) and Africa as a continent have the vast resources, opportunities, and potential to advance successfully and achieve the aspirations set out in Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want”, addressing pressing issues affecting the continent’ &#8211; Fatoumata CM Jallow Tambajang.

The gathering of the leaders of the African Union (AU) member nations will take place early next month in February 2021 to elect a new Commission, the body’s secretariat, to run the affairs of the AU for the next four years, including the Deputy Chairperson of the AUC.

Her Excellency Fatoumata CM Jallow Tambajang, one of the five all-women candidates for the position of the Deputy Chairperson, has become one of the most influential and respected women on the African continent, sworn in as Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia in 2017. Mrs Tambajang has, through her illustrious political career, continued to commit to her life’s call of being in service to the people of the continent she loves.

The role of the Deputy Chairperson is vital in the advocacy of Africa&#39;s growth and economic development and, as outlined in her manifesto, her personal mission is to address the pressing issues affecting Africa and the inherent challenges of the Commission in the spirit of Pan-Africanism and African renaissance.

Her political career in The Gambia dates back to the early 90’s. Mrs Tambajang has served as Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia; Minister of Health, Social Welfare and Women’s Affairs; Policy Adviser on Women to three successive Presidents of the Republic of The Gambia; Chairperson of the National Women’s Council; and Women’s Representative to The Gambia National Economic and Social Council, under the leadership of the First President of the Republic of The Gambia.

In 2016, she played a pivotal role in establishing an unprecedented coalition of seven Gambian opposition political parties, two independents, and four civil society organisations that stabilised the country and ushered a peaceful democratic transition of power in The Gambia.

Prior to her transition into government, Mrs Tambajang had a distinguished career with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Africa, working as a Chief Technical Adviser in Gambia as well as the UNV/UNDP Adviser on Gender, Health and Population in Liberia.

Mrs Tambajang is definitely on the right side of history among many other great African female leaders.

From taking on the task of fighting the global pandemic within the African context to reengineering the African debate to The Africa We Want, Mrs Tambajang has outlined her four priority actions to achieve her mandate, if elected to the position of the Deputy Chairperson:

 	Enhance administration and financial effectiveness, efficiency and responsiveness of the AUC; 	Strengthen the overall operational efficiency of the AUC; 	Effective and timely responses to the development challenges of Africa; 	The promotion of partnerships for development. 
AWIEF strongly believes that Her Excellency, a former AWIEF annual conference speaker and promoter of women entrepreneurship, will be able to unite the continent in the ways she has been using her platforms to address the unique challenges which face Africa and the world today, in particular the many issues which face African women.

On 9 January 2021, the Government of the Republic of Kenya announced the launch of its Trusted Travel platform, based on the Africa CDC Trusted Travel platform, becoming the first country to adopt the platform for managing travels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The ministry has collaborated with the African Union and Africa CDC, with technical support from PanaBIOS to implement an online system to authenticate and verify laboratory test certificates for travellers,” said Mr Mutahi Kagwe, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Health.
In October 2020, the African Union officially launched the Trusted Travel platform as part of the overall Trusted Travel Initiative during a joint ministerial meeting of the ministers of health, transport, and information and communication of African Union Member States.
Developed by PanaBIOS Consortium and Econet Group as a public-private partnership with Africa CDC, Trusted Travel is a top-class digital solution to support Member States in verifying COVID-19 test certificates for travellers and to help harmonize entry and exit screening across the continent.
The platform provides information on travel requirements at the departure and destination ports and access to a list of government approved laboratories for COVID-19 testing in African countries. It allows travellers to upload their COVID-19 test results online for easy verification by port health and travel officials and helps in the detection of forged certificates. This in turn will help establish trust and confidence in test results among government authorities, airlines, transport services operators and other stakeholders in the transport sector across the continent.
“As our economies, schools and borders re-open, Africa needs a harmonized approach to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This is why we launched the COVID-19 trusted travel portal as an innovative digital tool to help Member States upload and verify test results and to harmonize entry and exit requirements to prevent cross-border transmission on the continent,” said H.E. Amira Elfadil Mohammed, Commissioner for Social Affairs, African Union Commission.
The Africa CDC Trusted Travel initiative enables countries to keep their borders open for economic activities while preventing or minimizing the spread of COVID-19.
“We are in a critical phase of the pandemic. As economies reopen and travels resume, we must pay attention to the prevention of transmission, prevention of deaths and prevention of harm by carefully and cautiously opening our borders, and the Trusted Travel portal is the tool that Member States need to help them open safely,” said Dr John Nkengasong, Director of Africa CDC.
The Trusted Travel platform provides an extensive suite of technologies that will enable Member States to verify the authenticity of test results and vaccine certificates issued by other countries. Without such system, the proliferation of user-tampered and fake test and vaccine certificates will undermine efforts to minimize cross-border transmission while allowing trans-border economic activities to take place. The platform is secured and safe and has been developed using international standards of cybersecurity and data protection protocols.
Other partners involved in providing oversight for implementation of the Trusted Travel Initiative include the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, African Civil Aviation Commission, Airport Council International–Africa, African Airlines Association, and the International Air Transport Association.
African Union through Africa CDC, in collaboration with Panabios and Econet, will continue to provide technical support to the Government of Kenya in operationalizing the platform and calls on other Member States to hook up to the platform for screening and verification of test results to ensure safe public health corridor across the continent.

The International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) (www.ITFC-IDB.org) on behalf of The Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB), and in coordination with the League of Arab States hosted a high-level webinar themed “The role of the second phase of the Aid for Trade Initiative for Arab States (AfTIAS 2.0) in mitigating the negative effects of COVID-19 on trade in the Arab region”. The webinar gathered high level officials and partners, and country representatives, where the discussion evolved around the success of the first phase of AfTIAS Program in 2014 to 2018, and the way forward in regards to designing and implementing the AfTIAS 2.0 and the important role it will play in view of COVID-19 negative impact on intra-trade among Arab Countries.

The webinar was inaugurated by Dr. Bandar Hajjar, President, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, Dr. Kamal Hassan Ali, Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs at the League of Arab States (LAS), and Eng. Hani Sani Sonbol, CEO, International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation and Chairman of the AfTIAS Program Board.
During his remarks, Dr. Bandar Hajjar, President IsDB Group pointed out the Islamic Development Bank gives great important to trade, and believes that AfTIAS 2.0 will act as a catalyst for cooperation between Arab countries and organizations that will undoubtedly contribute to achieving comprehensive and sustainable development in the Arab region, relying on trade as a force. A driver for development, job creation and prosperity.&#8221;
Also in attendance was Dr. Nevin Gamea, Minister of Trade and Industry of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who shared how Egypt has benefited from the first phase of AfTIAS and the country’s expectations for the second phase.  Dr. Gamea pointed out that Egypt contributed proudly to the establishment of the first phase of the AfTIAS program, believing in joint Arab action. She also confirmed that the Arab Republic of Egypt has resolutely contributed to the design of the second phase of the program, as it hosted in October 2019 in Cairo, the workshop on &#8220;Theory of Change for the AfTIAS Program&#8221; under the supervision of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Dr. Kamal Hassan delivered a speech to the effect of continuing to support the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, the second phase of the AfTIAS program and seeking to promote it at all levels, believing in the importance of the program in the Arab Joint Cooperation and aiming to achieve Arab economic integration.
In his address, Eng. Hani Salem Sonbol said that in the coming days, ITFC will begin, in coordination with the Program’s focal points in the Arab countries, to receive initial requests from countries to consider projects that are eligible for financing according to the conditions and standards approved by the AfTIAS Program and according to the resources available to it. He also stressed that the success of the Program in this special circumstance requires the concerted efforts of the beneficiary countries and the relevant Arab organizations and donors, and through his speech he invited Arab countries, funds and international organizations to provide support for this program.
From his end, Mr. Saqr bin Abdullah Al-Muqbel, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the World Trade Organization in Geneva (on behalf of the Arab Group to the WTO) who delivered an opening remark, stressed on the importance for &#8220;investing of the second phase of AfTIAS&#8221; which is key for the development of enterprises, MSMEs and e-commerce promotion.
Mr. Abdulmohsen Bin Abdulrahman Al-Khayal, Director-General, Saudi Exports Program, Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) emphasized that this webinar &#8220;is taking place at a difficult time in which the world is suffering from the pandemic and its impact, which includes developed and developing countries alike, and its impact has been doubled by the inability to determine the timeframe for its continuation.&#8221;
It is worth noting that the webinar witnessed the participation of many heads of relevant Arab organizations and a number of ambassadors and permanent delegates of Arab countries to the World Trade Organization, the Economic and Social Council contact points for the League of Arab States, and the AFTIAS 2.0 focal points.

One-third of all African stories in news outlets on the continent are sourced from foreign news services according to a new report from Africa No Filter (www.AfricaNoFilter.org). The ‘How African Media Covers Africa’, highlights the fact that stories about Africa continue to be told through the same persistent and negative stereotypes and frames of poverty, disease, conflict, poor leadership and corruption.

The research surveyed 38 African editors, analyzed content from 60 African news outlets in 15 countries (Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, DRC, Egypt, Tunisia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal) between September and October 2020. In addition, four facilitated focus groups were held with 25 editors of African media, editors of Pan African outlets and international correspondents.  The results confirm challenges and experiences that are common knowledge within the industry: advertising revenue and newsrooms are shrinking, influencing the kind of news that Africans read and that news is largely negative and conflict filled.

Key findings from the report show that the sources for news gathering on African countries are problematic, the resulting content continues to feed old stereotypes, and often the quality of local journalism doesn&#39;t allow for nuanced and contextualized storytelling that is critical for telling stories about the 54 countries in Africa.
 	63% of outlets surveyed don’t have correspondents in other countries in Africa   	1/3 of all coverage on Africa was from non-African sources, with AFP and BBC  accounting for ¼ of all stories found in African outlets about other African countries.  African news agencies contributed minimally.   	81% of the stories analyzed were classified as “hard news” e.g. conflicts and crises driven by events – they were also largely political in nature    	13% of the news focused specifically on political violence, civil unrest, armed conflict   	South Africa, followed by Egypt were the countries with the most diverse coverage that was not necessarily linked to  newsy events meaning that those two countries are probably the ‘best known’ on the continent 
“Media is incredibly influential in setting the agenda and determining narratives about Africa,” says Moky Makura, executive director at Africa No Filter.  “The research clearly shows that despite years of independence, Africans still don’t hold the pen when it comes to writing our stories.  More importantly, we continue to promote the narratives about Africa being broken, dependent and lacking agency  through the stories we share in our media about each other. We need to take back the pen.”

Africa No Filter is a not-for-profit set up last year to help shift harmful and stereotypical narratives about Africa through research, advocacy and grant-making to storytellers.  It is funded by the Ford Foundation, Bloomberg, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Luminate, Open Society Foundation, Comic Relief, the Hilton Foundation and the British Council.

Makura adds: “Ironically, 50% of editors surveyed thought their coverage of other African countries didn’t contain stereotypes. It shows clearly that we have some work to do in educating ourselves about the role we play in perpetuating outdated stereotypes about ourselves.  Narrative matters and it has implications beyond just storytelling, it impacts investment in Africa, on youth and opportunities people see in their countries, on migration, creativity and innovation,” Makura says.

In response to this report, Africa No Filter is launching the continent’s first and only news agency that will focus on stories of creativity, innovation, arts &#038; culture, and human interest to fill the gap in the market.

85 people have tested positive to the disease, out of a sample size of 2,985 tested in the last 24 hours. The total confirmed positive cases are now 99,983. The cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,156,106.

33 patients have recovered from the disease. 25 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care while 8 are from our various facilities. The total recoveries now stand at 82,969.

4 patients have succumbed to the disease pushing our cumulative fatalities to 1,744. Our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their loved ones.

545 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,568 are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 27 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 15 of whom are on ventilatory support and 11 on supplemental oxygen. 1 patient is under observation.

14 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 10 of them in the general wards. 4 patients are in the High Dependency Unit.

As the world is gearing up for mass vaccination for their populations to slow the global COVID-19 pandemic, Sudan launched a different, yet equally important, nationwide vaccination campaign against polio targeting more than 8 million children.

The second vaccination round, led by the Federal Ministry of Health and supported by WHO and UNICEF, aims to give all children under the age of five additional protection to fight off the disease. During the first round, implemented in November, health workers and polio vaccinators administered polio vaccines to more than 8.2 million children.
“We must build on the successes of the first campaign to ensure we reach even more children in this new round campaign,” Dr Nima Saeed Abid, the WHO Representative in Sudan.
“It is unacceptable that children suffer life-long disability due to an absolutely avoidable cause (polio), while there is safe, effective and available vaccine.”
During this mass immunization campaigns, vaccinators aim to reach more than 95% of children in order to build population immunity and halt spread of the poliovirus. Parents are also being encouraged to get their children vaccinated with IPV through routine immunization.
“We know that children will only have full immunity once they have been vaccinated multiple times. I urge all parents to continue to support our efforts during the second vaccination campaign, so we can protect every child and defeat this outbreak.”
After being polio-free country for 11 years, disease detectives in Sudan confirmed an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in August 2020. cVDPV2 is a type of the poliovirus that emerges in communities with low immunity to polio.
Across the country* this week vaccinators are heading out onto city streets, along dusty rural roads, and visiting health facilities and internally displaced persons camps to ensure that no child is missed. In addition to oral polio vaccines, vitamin A will be delivered during the four-day campaign. Vaccinators will follow strict COVID-19 precaution measures, including mask wearing, hand hygiene and no touch vaccination methods.
Building on round one: reaching vulnerable populations
In the first round the programme worked closely to ensure marginalized and underserved communities as well as children of Ethiopian refugees settled in east Sudan, were included in microplans. For the first time in ten years, children were reached in Gorlangbang, in South Jebel Marra, a mountainous area in the south west of the country which has been frequently affected by conflict, as well as in Ulu of Baw locality in Blue Nile state.
Additional routine immunization services were provided at the camps for new arrivals, to ensure that all children are fully vaccinated against preventable diseases including measles and polio. Children were also reached by routine immunization acceleration campaigns in November and December 2020.
“The first round of the vaccination campaign was a test of the field staff’s tenacity to ensure no child was left behind,” Dr Nima said. “We are completely focused on our mission: to ensure that every child is reached with polio vaccine.”
