284 people have tested positive for the disease, from a sample size of 4,540 tested in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate is now 6.3%.

17 people have succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting Facility Record Audits on diverse dates in the month of April and May. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 3,240.
1,207 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities, while 4,946 patients are under the Home Based Isolation and Care Program.  96 patients are in the ICU, 23 of whom are on ventilatory support and 60 on supplemental oxygen. 13 patients are under observation.
92 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 85 of them in general wards and 7 in High Dependency Units (HDU).
Vaccination: As of today, a total of 974,000 persons have so far been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease countrywide.  Of these 295,202 are aged 58 years and above, Others 277,207, Health Workers, 166,043, Teachers 152,962, while Security Officers 82,586.
Second doses:  As of today, a total of 2,541 have received their second dose. Of these 2,150 are Health workers, Others 216, Security Officers 95, Teachers 45, those aged 58 years and above 35.

“To achieve accelerated reduction in maternal and perinatal mortality, the quality of care provided to pregnant women and newborns in health facilities must meet quality criteria which include health care that must be safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable and people-centred” stated Professor Jamilu Tukur, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

“Also, to improve quality of care, availability of health information plays a vital role, and this is the core aim of the Maternal and Perinatal Database for Quality, Equity and Dignity (MPD-4-QED) Programme”, added Professor Tukur the National coordinator, WHO Maternal and Paternal Database for Quality, Equity and Dignity Project (MPD-4-QED).
To make data readily available for quality of care improvement and accelerate progress towards the 2030 SDGs targets of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, the World Health Organization (WHO) Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) launched a two –year project, MPD-4-QED supported by MSD for Mothers* in 2019.
The MPD-4-QED programme uses a nationwide electronic system established in 54-referral level facilities to collect data on maternal and perinatal events during labour, childbirth and the early neonatal period. The data is routinely extracted from the hospital records of every pregnant woman at the end of her pregnancy and uploaded into a web based DHIS2 dashboard by designated trained medical records officers. In the case of a maternal or perinatal death, the designated hospital coordinators (an obstetrician and neonatologist) conduct an audit to find out the primary causes of deaths and their contributing factors.
WHO focal points in the Country Office and headquarters supported the Central Coordination Team (CCT) in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Northwest Nigeria to train and equip medical records officers and hospital coordinators (obstetrician and neonatologist) in each of the participating hospitals to capture data from clients’ case files after discharge and conduct audits of maternal and perinatal deaths that occur. This information is analysed and disseminated to stakeholders including the FMoH periodically as scorecards and publication of quarterly newsletters.
After a year of continuous data collection (September 2019 to August 2020), the database had 76 563 women enrolled comprising of 71 758 obstetric and 4 805 gynaecologic admissions with 97% of deaths audited. There is timely information on facility specific maternal mortality ratio (adjusted maternal mortality ratio) for the collaborating hospitals which averaged nationally at 575 per 100 000 live births as at 31 August, 2020 with regional variations ranging from 393 per 100 000 livebirths in the Southeast to 790 per 100 000 livebirths in the Northeast.
The figures have generated discourse by the network of hospitals, FMoH and WHO on why these deaths occur and hospitals themselves have identified innovative and feasible micro and macro strategies that can be implemented with minimal resources to improve quality of care at the facility level.
“Thus, the MPD-4-QED programme has successfully provided a system that generates timely and quality information on maternal and perinatal care in the health facilities.  Findings from death audits are used by the hospital management to make decisions that will improve the quality of care provided to pregnant women and their babies, improve the experiences of pregnant women and their families and can be used by the MPDRS committees in tertiary health facilities” stated Dr Adebimpe Adebiyi (Director Hospital Services, FMoH).
“She added that this database will go a long way in reducing neonatal mortality as the causes are now evident and necessary measures are taken to ensure no case is repeated”.
In the light of this, the Federal Ministry of Health has adopted the MPD-4-QED programme as its core strategy to strengthen implementation of MPDSR in tertiary level facilities to improve the quality of care provided to mothers and newborns.
“The global direction is to end preventable maternal and perinatal death. Every pregnancy and birth is unique, and collecting and analyzing data on each one is important as it provides vital information to help mitigate the causes and factors associated with maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality” says Dr Bosede Ezekewe, Technical Officer, Reproductive Health WHO Nigeria.
WHO provided technical assistance to the FMoH and National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to finalize the National MPDSR Bill through facilitating input and recommendation from colleagues and partners from the Regional Office and Headquarters. WHO is also adding her voice to advocate for the passage of the Bill into law.

Following the eruption of the volcano, Mount Nyiragongo near Goma, tens of thousands of women and girls are in urgent need of critical sexual and reproductive health services, including support to pregnant women, newborn babies and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (GBV).

More than 400,000 people, including 88,000 women of childbearing age and 12,200 pregnant women, fled Goma, a city with a population of around two million, to seek refuge in Sake and Rushuru territories, according to the North Kivu province government. Others were displaced to Bukavu in South Kivu province. More than 25,000 people crossed into Rwanda, where a temporary camp was set up at Rugerero in the district of Rubavu.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) estimated that 31 people died as an indirect result of the eruption and a further 40 were reported missing. For years, the people of Goma and surrounding villages have lived under the threat of volcanic activity from Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Nyiragongo, ranked among the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. Seventeen villages in the territory of Nyiragongo were affected by the lava flow, which destroyed homes and infrastructure. Also destroyed were three health facilities, causing health system disruptions and affecting access to critical sexual and reproductive health services, including critical maternal health services.

Complex situation
Many of the humanitarian actors and civil servants have relocated from the ‘red zones’ – Majengo, Mabanga Nord and Sud, Virunga, Bujovu, Murara, Kahembe, Mikeno, Volcano and Mapendo – reducing the response capacity on the ground.

The displaced population in Sake is at risk of armed groups, as the Masisi territory is known for frequent clashes between the Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo (FARDC) and militia groups, and it also has North Kivu’s third highest number of GBV cases. In times of crisis, women and girls’ vulnerabilities are heightened, leaving them at greater risk of sexual and gender-based violence. North Kivu province, of which Goma is the capital, recorded 14,681 cases of GBV in 2020.
UNFPA, the United Nation’s sexual and reproductive health agency, is working with the local authorities and partners, including the Ministry of Health, to address the sexual and reproductive health of the affected population. Following a rapid assessment of the situation in Sake and Goma, in which premature deliveries and maternal deaths were noted, UNFPA handed over reproductive health supplies to government officials at Kyeshero Hospital for the benefit of those affected in Nyiragongo Health Zone, particularly Kibati, Kanyarucinya and Turunga, including a reception centre for displaced people. Items provided include individual delivery kits for women giving birth and for the midwives attending to them, sexually transmitted infection treatment kits, and dignity kits with essential items for women and girls. The donated items will cover the reproductive health needs of 150,000 people for three months at a cost of US$60,000.

In preparation for an increase in GBV cases due to the population movements, UNFPA is strengthening the capacities of health centres and providing other basic services to facilitate multi-sectorial management of an anticipated 1,760 GBV survivors.

UNFPA’s proposed emergency intervention package includes support for assisted delivery, including Caesarean sections, for around 800 pregnant women by qualified personnel; providing 5,000 delivery kits for women giving birth; supporting the medical treatment of 5,300 cases of sexually transmitted infections; providing holistic care for 1,760 victims of GBV at targeted structures; supporting the One-Stop Centre at Kyeshero Hospital; supporting family planning services for 12,200 new users of a modern family planning method; training 180 maternity providers in the prevention and control of infections in obstetrics; provide 100 vulnerable women with financial support of US$200 each for socio-economic reintegration; distributing 5,000 dignity kits to vulnerable women and girls; and providing targeted health facilities with emergency reproductive health kits.

Team Qhubeka ASSOS motivated for Tour de Suisse

The African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) has approved a $1 million grant to boost local content and development of Small and Medium-Size Enterprise (SME) initiatives in the southern African nation of Mozambique.

The grant, from the Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi-Donor Trust Fund (YEI MDTF), will provide technical and institutional assistance to the Instituto para a Promoção das Pequenas e Médias Empresas, or IPEME,  for the direct support of start-ups and SMEs, with a particular focus on youth-led and women-owned  in business.
The Mozambique YWEB Start Up Project with the IPEME will be a multisector local content initiative focusing on tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, ICT, health, and transport, emphasizing youth-led businesses and WEBs. It aims to facilitate supply links between such initiatives and large companies, including government entities and non-governmental organizations (NGO&#39;s).
Solomon Quaynor, African Development Bank&#39;s Vice President in charge of Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization said the project would  improve job creation, linkages between local SMEs, and youth and women empowerment.
“They are in line with the Bank&#39;s core objective of supporting private sector development in Africa, including through the promotion of local entrepreneurship, the development of value chains and support to MSMEs that represent the bulk of the African economic fabric,&#8221; Quaynor noted.
The project will also support more than 150 local companies by facilitating access to skills and certification,  contracts with large firms and finance from local financial institutions, Country Director Pietro Toigo said. “These partnerships demonstrate a strong commitment from the Mozambique government to support local business, communities and create jobs, particularly in the north of the country.
IPEME, which in English stands for The Institute for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises, is a public entity under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, aimed at boosting and developing small and medium sized businesses.

After careful evaluation of government guidelines and consultation with customers, the organisers have made the decision to move the dates and location of Future Energy Series: Africa 2021 (www.FutureEnergySeriesAfrica.com). Originally scheduled from 1-4 November in Cape Town, South Africa, the event will now take place in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) on 8-11 November 2021 in the Madinat Jumeirah alongside the 27th edition of Africa Oil Week.

Simon Ford, Portfolio Director at Hyve Group plc said: “Delivering the event to the highest standard and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our attendees has always been our top priority. We believe that hosting the 2021 edition in Dubai will enable us to ensure that the event experience is both safe and premium for our customers.” 
He added: “Though we are very disappointed not to be able to host our event in Cape Town this year, we believe that Dubai is the next best location. The country has demonstrated exceptional progress in its vaccination programme and has also led the way in safely reopening successful, large-scale international events that attracted business travellers from more than 150 countries. This is consequently increasing business confidence and accelerating the revival of all major sectors in the country. As such, in order to allow our customers ample time to make travel arrangements, we have made the decision to move the dates and location &#8211; we are confident that Dubai will be a safe and highly desirable destination to host both the Future Energy Series: Africa and the 27th edition of Africa Oil Week.”
The organisers have vowed that despite the location change, Future Energy Series: Africa will be the must-attend event with Africa at its core, a platform dedicated to fostering relationships, and promoting a sustainable energy transition in Africa. An event that will drive thought leadership, catalyse innovation and stimulate deal-making, attracting a uniquely senior global delegate pool whilst maintaining a distinctively African focus.
The organised have confirmed the participation of the leading Government Ministers and regulatory bodies from across Africa, as well as senior representatives from strategic partner organisations including AFUR, EITI and REEEP, confirming the event’s position as the gathering shaping the future of African energy.
Future Energy Series: Africa will take place in accordance with the latest health &#038; safety and government guidance and will reunite industry leaders with a shared vision of driving green economies and ensuring universal power access for the continent.
