The Ministry of Interior of Egypt in partnership with Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UN Office of Counterterrorism (UNOCT) hosted a high-level regional training workshop on the use of biometrics and traveler information to enhance border security capacities. The three-day workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Interior’s Police Academy in Cairo between 27 to 29 July 2021 and chaired by General Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Assistant Minister of Interior and President of the Police Academy as well as Mr. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Alharfash NAUSS Vice President for External Relations.

This workshop, which is part of existing partnership cooperation between NAUSS, IOM and UNOCT and the host government Egypt, gathered 55 senior Ministry of Interior officials from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Tunisia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Union of the Comoros, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Republic of Yemen and the Republic of the Sudan. Representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Governments of Egypt and Belgium shared and exchanged their expertise with the delegates.
“IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants, governments and society alike: it is therefore essential that we avail our expertise and support to governments in securing borders while facilitating regular, safe and rights-based mobility” said Mrs. Carmela Godeau, IOM MENA Regional Director. “As an intergovernmental body enjoying nearly global presence, IOM works with its partners in the international community, especially its UN sister agencies, to assist in meeting the operational challenges of migration in full respect of human rights.”

The objective of the workshop was to exchange experiences between Arab law enforcement and security services, international organizations and industry representatives to enhance border security against the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and other international law, while facilitating regular and safe cross-border mobility. The workshop highlighted challenges and great opportunities offered by Advance Passenger Information (API)/ Passenger Name Record (PNR) implementation as well as solutions, such as the legal and operational practices, inter-agency and international cooperation, systems inter-operability and cooperation with air carrier industry. The workshop also proffered solutions in use of biometrics in border management. A common theme throughout the 3-day workshop was that of cooperation in enhancing border security: with and between governments and with international organizations, availing their technical support.
In the MENA region, IOM enjoys comprehensive engagement with governments in the field of immigration and border management. The programming covers community policing initiatives, humanitarian border management and border management information systems, identity management, search and rescue, counter-migrant-smuggling and a growing number of governments in the region are exchanging expertise and experience with IOM toward enhanced migration management. Joint regional expert initiatives are a new focus of cooperation: today’s regional event follows NAUSS-IOM-ICAO joint online workshop late 2020 on the Traveller Identification Programme, gathering delegates from all Arab League Member States.

Philemon Lar, a 39-year-old farmer living in Bokkos local government area (LGA) in Plateau State, Nigeria, got to know about his Hepatitis status in 2015 when he went to the hospital to donate blood for his cousin who was to undergo surgery. 

“It was after the donation process that the laboratory technologist called me and informed me that my blood could not be used as it was reactive for hepatitis B.  I was initially scared, however, a nurse at the hospital allayed my fears. I still do regular medical checks, and I have since been careful with my diet and desist from taking alcoholic or any fermented drink”, he says. 
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in Africa including Nigeria, more than 90 million people are living with hepatitis, accounting for 26% of the global total. Nigeria, with an estimated population of 190 million people, has a prevalence rate of 8.1 (16 million) and 1.1% (2.2 million) for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among adult aged 15-64 years respectively (based on the 2018 Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) report), but many like Mr Lar, get to know about their hepatitis status by chance or when already ill. 
Commemorating World Hepatitis Day 2021
Due to the severity of the disease, Nigeria on 28 July joined WHO to mark 2021 edition of World Hepatitis Day with a ministerial Press briefing to raise awareness on viral hepatitis – infection of the liver, which, when chronic, can cause severe liver disease and liver cancer.
At the event with over 20 journalists in attendance, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire urges all Nigerians to work together to eliminate the silent killer, viral hepatitis by going to any health facility and get screened, as it is a simple rapid testing exercise.  
He noted that has become imperative to improve community engagement, political leadership, testing and treatment, and scale up high impact intervention because the mortality rate from both infections remains alarming despite limited global progress in addressing the scourge.  
This year’s theme “Hepatitis can’t wait” with a national sub theme: “National Ownership and Financing for Viral Hepatitis Elimination” is an urgent call to governments and stakeholders to improve effort towards eliminating a disease that globally kills one person every 30 seconds, even in the current COVID-19 crisis. 
In his goodwill message, WHO Nigeria Country Representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo commended the efforts of the government towards elimination of viral hepatitis, saying Nigeria is among the 14 countries that is implementing hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine, and routinely screen all donated blood and blood products for HBV and HCV. 
He noted that though the birth dose and pentavalent hepatitis vaccine is provided free of charge for all under 5 children, more needs to be done to prevent mother to child transmission (PMTCT) as the health system is challenged with ensuring access and availability for infant and children testing and treatment for pregnant women and mothers. 
Encouraging all stakeholders in maternal and child health to consider integrating hepatitis B interventions into antenatal care services together with the HIV, the Syphilis, and PMTCT programme, Dr Mulombo pledged WHO’s commitment to continuing partnership with Federal Ministry of Health, National AIDS/STI Control Program (NASCAP)and other departments as well as partners and stakeholders working on viral hepatitis through provision of technical support, and innovations towards the attainment of the set targets.  Dr Mulombo urged journalists to “champion this cause to rapidly improve access to services to prevent, diagnose and treat hepatitis in Nigeria.”
Hepatitis is preventable, treatable and curable. There are five different hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. While they all cause liver disease, they have different modes of transmission, severity of the illness, geographical distribution and prevention methods.

SWIFT today announces the launch of SWIFT Go, a transformative new service that enables small businesses and consumers to send fast, predictable, highly secure, and competitively priced low-value cross-border payments anywhere in the world, direct from their bank accounts. Seven global banks, which collectively handle 33 million low-value cross-border payments per year, are already live with the service.

SWIFT Go enables financial institutions to offer a seamless payments experience for low value transactions often initiated by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to pay suppliers overseas and by consumers sending money to friends and family internationally. Using tighter service level agreements between institutions and pre-validation of data, SWIFT Go enables banks to provide their end customers a fast and predictable payments experience with upfront visibility on processing times and costs.

The SWIFT Go service builds on the high-speed rails of SWIFT gpi, which have transformed the speed and predictability of high-value payments. The service marks another milestone in SWIFT’s strategy to enable instant and frictionless transactions from one account to another, across SWIFT’s network that connects more than 11,000 institutions, and 4 billion accounts across 200 countries worldwide. It will further strengthen the capabilities of banks to serve their customers in the high-growth small business and consumer payments segments.

SWIFT Go was developed in close collaboration with the global SWIFT community and is underpinned by several key pillars:

 	Speed: Tighter service levels between banks increase speed. A single payment format increases straight-through processing, while services such as pre-validation remove frictions that cause delays. 	Predictability: The amount, time, fees and FX rate of a payment are known in advance. The sender and receiver of a payment can track the status in real-time. 	Easy to use: The user experience is simple and streamlined, with data requirements known upfront. Strict network validation provides for easy initiation and processing of SWIFT Go payments 	Competitive prices: Processing fees are agreed between financial institutions upfront so they can provide their customers with full transparency; increased straight-through processing further reduces processing costs. 	Security: Senders and receivers have peace of mind that payments are underpinned by the strong security of the SWIFT network. 	

Seven leading global banks are now using SWIFT Go live: BBVA; Bank of New York Mellon; DNB; MYBank; Sberbank; Société Générale, and UniCredit.

SWIFT launches SWIFT Go, a fast, cost-effective service for low-value cross-border payments

As countries in West and Central Africa face a rising demand for power, fuelled by growing populations and industry, there is an opportunity to introduce an improved energy mix to aid them on their journeys to reduce carbon emissions. According to Kweku Frempong, recently appointed as Area General Manager for West and Central Africa (WACA) at Aggreko (www.Aggreko.com), it is critical as countries look to increase their energy generation capacity to look at flexible commercial and technical solutions that incorporate a mix of thermal and renewable resources.

“As Aggreko we are leading the journey on transitioning to more eco-friendly fuels to generate electricity,” he says. “As a global organisation we have already made a commitment to reduce our carbon emissions and use of diesel fuel with customers by 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero across our fleet by 2050. We are also working closely with our partners to deliver flexible and cost-effective financing models for most of our customers as a sustainable financing model is a key ingredient in solving the energy issues in the region.”
John Lewis, Managing Director at Aggreko Africa, says that Kweku has a critical role to play in the region to drive Aggreko’s transition. “He has a very clear vision for us in the region, which is in support of our global transition and will assist our clients in meeting their own carbon neutrality goals.”
Kweku adds that along with the move to using alternative fuel sources in the region, there is also an aggressive push for decentralised power on the continent, especially in remote areas with small populations where it is not cost-effective to connect them to the grid. “We have seen growth in micro and mini grids in most parts of Africa and this is playing a critical role in ensuring energy security and supporting failing infrastructure.”
Countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria have long faced long periods with no investment in the grid and transmission and distribution lines. “The lack of investment into the grids in these countries have led to a lot more power outages,” he says. “It is estimated that there is a 60% funding gap between the current demands and the funds available to bridge that gap. I must add, however, that we are beginning to see changing economic models and structures with more countries moving to service and cost-reflective tariffs. Historically, we have lived with energy subsidies from government in post parts of Africa, but these cost-reflective tariffs, will open up most of these economies for the much-needed funding that is required.”
Kweku says another noticeable trend is that of regulatory changes around decentralisation. “We are seeing a lot of economies moving to a willing seller, willing buyer model. We saw this recently in South Africa and Nigeria, where the countries have relaxed the traditional models of transmission and distribution to the consumer as well as to key sectors such as manufacturing and mining who have significant power needs. They can now also contract directly with independent power producers (IPPs) to meet their power demands, which in turn opens up these economies for private sector investment in the power sector.”   
He says that while it was anticipated that Africa would leapfrog into renewables, the transition has been modest to date. “Often where the demand is urgent, countries look for immediate solutions, which is often thermal. While there are strategies for the long-term transition to renewables, many countries remain focused on addressing the immediate need and this sometimes puts renewables on the backburner. There is, however, scope to move along this journey faster than anticipated. As more countries affirm their commitment to the 2030 ambitions and 2050 net zero emissions, we hope to see funding made available for large-scale hybrid projects. While we have already seen this happen in countries like Egypt and South Africa, there is still a need to rebalance between the immediate need for power for the population while also looking at the long-term solutions for renewables.”

The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced that its landmark 75th Anniversary Season in 2021-22 will be commemorated as “NBA 75” and feature the unveiling of the 75 greatest players in league history.

NBA 75 will pay tribute to generations of basketball fans around the world, as well as current and former players and coaches. Throughout the season, the league will also continue its decades-long legacy of supporting the communities where the NBA family lives, works and plays and by improving lives through the game of basketball. Additional year-long celebrations will include special events in team markets, NBA partner activities and limited-edition product offerings. The league’s broadcast partners, ESPN/ABC, TNT and NBA TV, will be commemorating NBA 75 with content offerings throughout the season.

NBA 75 will also see the debut of new Nike uniform designs celebrating the 75th Anniversary Season, diamond on-court elements, Wilson as the new game ball partner, and integration around marquee events such as NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland and the NBA Draft presented by State Farm®. Cleveland last hosted NBA All-Star in 1997, when the league celebrated its 50th Anniversary Season.

“The 2021-22 season will be truly special as we celebrate 75 years of NBA basketball,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “We look forward to honoring the players and teams – both past and present – who have inspired generations of fans around the world.”

Initial plans for NBA 75 include:

75th Anniversary Team A blue-ribbon panel of media, current and former players, coaches, general managers, and team executives will select a new 75th Anniversary Team, featuring the 75 greatest players of all time. The team will be announced in October.

NBA 75 Logo A commemorative NBA 75 logo, revealed earlier, will appear throughout the season on courts and official NBA merchandise, inside arenas and in original broadcast, digital and social media content. The new logo is a fresh take on the league’s iconic Logoman identity, based in the classic 75th Anniversary symbol – the diamond.

Marketing Campaign NBA 75 will be a continuation of the “That’s Game” campaign, which launched at the start of the 2021 NBA Playoffs. The campaign will honor the past, present and future of the NBA across the court, community and culture. It will be a 360-degree, fan-focused celebration delivered through linear, social, digital and physical activations as the league ramps up to season tip-off and returns to its traditional schedule.

New NBA Outfitting and Game Ball for 75th Anniversary Season Nike will celebrate NBA 75 with diamond-embellished jersey details and new Classic Edition and City Edition uniforms across the league. New Era also integrates the 75th diamond embellishment on its 2021 NBA Draft and Tip Off Edition caps.

Additionally, Wilson will officially debut as the new game ball partner in the 2021-22 season. Wilson was the NBA’s initial basketball manufacturer and the official game ball for the league’s first 37 seasons.

The NBA’s inaugural season took place in 1946-47 and featured 11 teams, including three active franchises: the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors). The Knicks were part of the NBA’s first game when they played the Toronto Huskies on Nov. 1, 1946, at Maple Leaf Gardens, and the Warriors were crowned the league’s first champion that season.

Our team for Circuito de Getxo will see Giacomo Nizzolo join our squad, replacing Emil Vinjebo. Placing second at last year&#39;s edition of the race, the European Champion will be looking to emulate his previous performance and possibly finishing one step higher.

The United Arab Emirates, through the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), has sent an aid plane carrying 80,000 COVID-19 vaccines to Mauritania to bolster the country’s efforts in curbing the spread of the virus.

This shipment of medical supplies, which arrived in conjunction with the opening of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed field hospital to treat people infected with the virus, aims to provide greater protection for the vulnerable, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic diseases.
Hamad Ghanem Al Mehairi, UAE Ambassador to Mauritania, stressed the strength of bilateral relations, explaining that the UAE is always present in supporting Mauritania with its humanitarian and development initiatives.
&#8220;This health and humanitarian initiative embodies the UAE&#39;s approach and continuous efforts to support the brotherly Mauritanian people and provide them with assistance in all fields. For many years, the UAE has undertaken great efforts in Mauritania in various aspects, foremost of which is the interest in the health aspect.&#8221;
Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, ERC Secretary-General, said that this initiative comes in line with the UAE&#39;s efforts to limit the spread of the virus around the world, based on its humanitarian and pioneering role in combating the pandemic.
He stressed that these vaccines will contribute to strengthening preventive and precautionary measures among Mauritanian people, limit the outbreak of the pandemic, and helping to reach the stage of recovery.
To date, the UAE has sent more than 2,200 tonnes of medical supplies to more than 136 countries.

I.Political Diplomacy

H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia had a meeting with H.E. Ramtane Lamamra, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National community Abroad of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. On the occasion, Mr. Demeke gave a briefing on the second filling of the GERD which was done according to the DoP which was signed among the tripartite in 2015. The briefing also included the humanitarian ceasefire in Tigray, where the government of Ethiopia stayed committed despite the terrorist TPLF&#39;s disrespect to peace. They noted the importance of cementing relationships with expanded engagements. Mr. Demeke also stated Ethiopia’s readiness to host the 5th Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), which was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussion between the two sides included the situation in Tigray the GERD negotiations, the 6th General elections and the Ethiopia-Sudan border dispute. The major points are:
· TPLF has continued discrediting the unilateral humanitarian ceasefire endangering the people of Tigray and particularly farmers
· The terrorist group is launching fresh attacks in different areas bordering the region with Amhara and Afar endangering the spirit of the ceasefire
· The international community should force the TPLF to respect the ceasefire
· GERD is a development project and attempts to internationalize and securitize it is not helpful to negotiating parties
· The AU-led tripartite talks over the GERD should continue soon
· The 6th General elections was transparent, democratic
· The international community should tell Sudan to withdraw its troops from Ethiopian territories and keep the status quo of the 1972 Exchange of notes between the two countries
· Ethiopia-Sudan border dispute shall be resolved only through peaceful means
· The UN Secretary General appreciates the Ethiopian Government’s declaration of humanitarian ceasefire and wants the other side to respect that too.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, H.E. Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, has arrived in Addis Ababa today. He was received by State Minister H.E. Ambassador Birtukan Ayano at Bole International Airport. During his stay in Ethiopia, the Algerian Foreign Minister will have discussions with H.E. President Sahle Work Zewde, Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H.E. Demeke Mekonnen.
Ethiopian Ambassador to Djibouti H.E. Berhanu Tsegaye has discussed with MARY NJOROGE, Representative&#038;Country Director of WFP in Djibouti. Ambassador Berhanu said the international community should spare no time to condemn TPLF that has repeatedly shown its utter disregard and cruelty to the people in Tigray by blocking essential aid to the region. He said although TPLF has continued to disrupt&#038;endanger the free movements of trucks, the government of Ethiopia has doubled its efforts believing it is vital to meet the growing demands in the region.
II. On returnees from KSA
Since November 2017, the Government of Ethiopia has facilitated the return of 415,000 citizens from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Many of the migrants were detained in Saudi Arabia for immigration offenses. The Government of Ethiopia’s embassy and consular officials in Saudi Arabia regularly visit detention centers to assess the citizen’s wellbeing and facilitate their return to their families across the country.
In Addis Ababa, the Government in cooperation with humanitarian partners such as IOM, ERC, and MSF Spain established an operation to provide humanitarian assistance on arrival and facilitate a safe return to home communities. On arrival, the migrants are assessed for vulnerabilities and special needs and referred accordingly. Unaccompanied and separated children were reunified by the government following family tracing and best interest determination.
To help our citizens rebuild their lives in Ethiopia, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is working with development actors to provide reintegration support for some of the migrants. Others have been referred to the private sector for job opportunities. However, the needs outstrip available resources. Hence, the government is appealing for other cooperating partners to be part of an effort to reintegrate individuals and empower households and communities to resist the pull irregular migration of irregular migration.
The Government under the leadership of the Office of the Attorney General has strengthened the laws and created partnerships needed to combat human trafficking and illicit migrant smuggling. Most of the migrants are smuggled to transit countries and exposed to human rights violations and deprivations. The Immigration Agency is undertaking concerted efforts to strengthen border management and reduce smuggling and human trafficking.
In June 2021, our government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia agreed to prioritize the repatriation of Ethiopian nationals subjected to prolonged detention due to mobility restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost 42,000 citizens (84% male, 16% female) have since been repatriated in one month. To accommodate an operation of this magnitude amid the ongoing public health challenges caused by the COVID-19, the Government set up 8 reception centers in Addis Ababa to temporarily shelter the migrants as they transit to their final destinations. The government allocated personnel and financial resources to provide the migrants with health care, feeding, psychosocial support and physical safety. Our partners are running an additional 4 shelters providing similar services but focused on migrants with special needs such as unaccompanied and separated children, mothers with babies, and human trafficking survivors. Admission to the centers is on a voluntary basis and the migrants enjoy the freedom of movement, including the right to leave anytime.
All migrants are provided a transport allowance to their final destinations safely. Unfortunately, the ongoing hostilities in Tigray have made it logistically impossible for many migrants to return to their homes in that region. The affected returnees are helped to reunify with extended family in peaceful parts of Ethiopia. Those who do have family members to reunify with are being provided longer-term stays at dedicated reception centers until such a time when their return to Tigray is feasible and safe.
Although a lot has been achieved so far in repatriating citizens from KSA, some challenges (new and lingering ones) remain to be tackled. The Government of Ethiopia is working with relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia to tackle challenges. In this regard, the two governments are working to avoid arbitrary detention of Ethiopian citizens, provide protections to property, facilitate a dignified return for voluntary migrants and work on the expedited full implementation of the labor agreements between the two countries.
III. Citizen centre Diplomacy
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have paid a visit to North Shoa Zone and Oromo special Administration Zones in the Amhara Regional State. Jile Timuga and Efrata Gidem woredas were affected by conflict and the Ministry wants to show its solidarity with the affected people and support the rehabilitation process. State Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Tsion Teklu, in her speech at the event, said the visit was organized to show support to affected people and denounce the efforts of the anti-peace forces and restore peace and stability in the country. She said the Ministry has provided 200,000 birr each for the rehabilitation of the two affected areas, adding that the Ministry and its missions around the world will mobilize Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent to further support the rehabilitation process.
Members of the Ethiopian Community Association in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the FDRE Embassy in Riyadh have provided food and non-food items to 1221 Ethiopians at a women’s migration Center in Riyadh. The embassy thanked the community members for their support.
The Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Hirut Kassaw, spoke to Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent in Japan regarding the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and other national issues. She thanked the Ethiopian community in Japan for their positive response to the request for assistance in controlling the COVID19 pandemic, the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the law enforcement operationand support for IDPs. She also called on Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent in Japan to promote and encourage Ethiopian athletes on various social media platforms.
Ethiopians of the Somali region who are living in Kenya are urged to invest in their country. Officials from various offices of the Somali Regional State met with scholars, investors and youths in Kenya to discuss the current situation in their country and region. The head of the Somali Regional State&#39;s Diaspora and Investment Bureau, Abdisalam Yusuf, called on the region&#39;s people and other investors to invest in the state. He called on the people to contribute to the Great Renaissance Dam, to help people displaced by various conflicts and to strengthen the Ethiopian Defense Forces. FDRE Ambassador Meles Alem responded to questions from attendees.
Ethiopians living in Washington DC have made a rally to show solidarity and collect funds in support of the ENDF and the GERD. H.E. Dr. Eng. Seleshi Bekele, H.E. Ambassador Fitsum Arega and H.E. Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie were present at the rally and have delivered speeches acknowledging the Diaspora support to their country and encouraging further participation on things that matter in Ethiopia. More than $ 100,000 was collected at the rally.
Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent living in Australia have held an online discussion to commemorate the success of the second round of the Grand Renaissance Dam. They have their delight over the successful completion of the second round of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. In his opening remarks, Dr. Muktar Kedir, Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Australia, said the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam is a manifestation of our unity and sovereignty and a renaissance project of the current generation. He further called on participants to continue supporting the project.
Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent participated in a fundraising program organized by the Ethiopian Community in Munich. The program with the purchase of bonds, magazine sales and donations for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has raised more than 15,000 Euros.

Zambia must immediately provide medical treatment to thousands of children suffering from lead poisoning, and must take swift steps to clean up areas contaminated by residue from what was once the country’s largest lead mine, UN experts said today.

“More than 25 years after the Kabwe mine and smelter closed, it is scandalous that some 300,000 people still have to live on toxic soil,” the experts said. “Schools, playgrounds, homes and back yards all have high lead levels, so residents are being poisoned on a huge scale, and children are the most vulnerable.”
Kabwe, the capital of Zambia&#39;s Central Province, was founded on the discovery of lead and zinc deposits during colonial times and was home to lead mining and smelting from 1904 to 1994, when the Government closed the mine. Over three million tons of tailings (waste from the mining process), about 2.5 million tons of slag (waste from the smelter) and other waste remain in the area.
“With every passing day of lead exposure, children’s health is being damaged and their futures are being compromised,” the experts said. “It is critical to provide specialized treatment to all children and adults who require it.”
The World Health Organisation has concluded there is no safe level of lead in human blood. In Kabwe&#39;s afflicted townships, over 95% of children have levels of 10 µg/dL and above, meaning they are at exposed to serious risks and harms. Last year about 2,500 Kabwe children, tested under a World Bank project, were found to have levels of 45 μg/dL and higher, meaning they require immediate chelation therapy, the most common treatment for lead poisoning.
Lead attacks the central nervous system, causing numbness, anaemia, convulsions, brain damage and even death. Women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths. “Young children are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of lead and can suffer profound and permanent adverse health effects and disabilities, particularly affecting the development of the brain and the nervous system,” the experts said.
“It is also essential that children are not returned to the contaminated environment once they have completed chelation treatment,” they said. This means Zambia must clean up all residential areas completely and permanently. “The Government is still failing to fully address the lead pollution crisis in Kabwe and ensure sustained testing and treatment for Kabwe’s residents,” the experts said. 
The experts emphasized that states and mining companies have respective duties and responsibilities under the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to protect, respect and remedy business-related human rights abuses.
Some progress was made under a World-Bank-funded project that started in 2016. However, the project does not address the source of the contamination, Kabwe mine’s waste dumps, nor does it entail cleaning up the affected townships in a comprehensive manner.
New sources of lead pollution are appearing in the area as the Zambian Government issues licences for small-scale mines, now opening alongside unlicensed mines.
The experts said authorities have not tackled health dangers from small-scale mining which picked up after the main mine closed in 1994.
“Lead poisoning in Kabwe adds up to an assault on the right to life with dignity, the right to health and the right to a clean environment,” the experts said, “and we urge Zambia to take responsibility and do more so that the children of the country are ensured health, wellbeing and a decent future.”

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had a conversation today with his Tunisian counterpart, Mr Othman Jerandi, with whom he has been in close contact over recent days. He said the French authorities are following the situation in Tunisia with the closest attention.

He emphasized the importance of swiftly appointing a prime minister and forming a government capable of meeting Tunisians’ expectations, amid the crisis the country is going through. In this regard, he reiterated France’s support for Tunisians, particularly in the health field.
M. Le Drian stressed the need to maintain calm and the rule of law, and to enable Tunisia’s democratic institutions to swiftly function normally again.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a contribution of 36 metric tons of nutritious dates worth USD 88,437 from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) to support refugees living in north-west Tanzania.

The consignment of dates will supplement WFP’s monthly food assistance to over 50,000 pregnant and breatfeeding women, children under five years of age and  other vulnerable groups in Mtendeli, Nduta and Nyarugusu refugee camps in the Kigoma Region. This latest contribution from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia comes at a time when WFP is facing significant funding gaps that has led to only 68 percent of humanitarian food being distributed to refugees in Tanzania.
“WFP is grateful to The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center for their continued support. We are very pleased that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains one of our valued donors in Tanzania, helping WFP reach the most vulnerable populations in need of food assistance,” said WFP Country Director and Representative Sarah Gordon-Gibson at a handover ceremony held at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Dar es Salaam.
Refugees are solely reliant on WFP to meet their basic food needs. They receive a food basket that consists of Super cereal, pulses, salt, vegetable oil and fortified maize meal.  The distribution of dates will take place this month and provide more than 50,000 beneficiaries with much-needed healthy nutritients.  
Currently, WFP is assisting nearly 235,000 Burundian and Congolese refugees in Kigoma’s Mtendeli, Nduta, and Nyarugusu refugee camps. Between now and June 2022, WFP is facing a funding shortfall of USD 29.6 million for its refugee operations.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia supports WFP refugee operations in Tanzania

Around 7.7 million African children missed out on vital first doses of Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Measles and Polio vaccines in 2020. The nearly 10% rise in missed vaccinations on the previous year in Africa was driven by disruptions to health services by the COVID-19 pandemic, new data by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World health Organization (WHO) show.

Three African countries are among the top 10 countries globally to record the greatest number of unvaccinated children in 2020 for the first dose of Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTP -1) and Measles: Ethiopia, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Overall, Africa still accounts for the highest percentage of ‘zero dose’ children (those who have not received DTP -1) in the world.
Despite impressive efforts to scale up supplemental immunization campaigns while grappling with the myriad demands of the pandemic, the 7.7 million children in Africa that missed DTP-1 vaccines make up 45% of the global figure.
The WHO-UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage—published on 15 July—are the first to reflect global service disruptions due to COVID-19. In 2020, 3.7 million more children globally missed out on routine immunization than in 2019. In Africa, 1.7 million children did not receive their third dose of the DTP containing vaccine in 2020.
Data for the WHO African Region showed reductions in percentage coverage across the board between 2019 and 2020. Coverage for the DTP-1 vaccine fell by a percentage point to 79% in 2020, for DTP-3 from 74% to 72%, and for MCV1 from 70% to 68%. Globally, DTP-1 coverage fell from 90% to 87% between 2019 and 2020, from 86% to 83% for DTP-3, and 86% to 84% for MCV1.
These vaccination rates are far below the 90% coverage target of Africa’s Regional Vaccine Action Plan and far below the 95% coverage recommended by WHO to protect against measles. The global Immunization Agenda 2030 meanwhile, has the ambitious target of achieving 90% coverage for all essential childhood vaccinations in the next nine years.
Between January 2020 and April 2021, eight African countries reported major measles outbreaks affecting tens of thousands of children largely due to low routine immunization coverage or delayed vaccination campaigns. In addition, in 2020 the quality of measles surveillance in Africa fell to its lowest level in seven years, with only 11 countries meeting their target.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, expressed concern that while countries were focusing on COVID-19 vaccines, children were being put at risk.
“We have gone backwards on other vaccinations, leaving children at risk from devastating but preventable diseases like measles, polio or meningitis,” he said, warning that multiple disease outbreaks could be catastrophic for communities and health systems already under pressure from COVID-19.
“This makes it even more urgent than ever to invest in childhood vaccinations and to ensure that every child is reached,” Dr Tedros cautioned.

Coronavirus – Africa: COVID-19 widens routine Immunization gaps in Africa

In the face of a global pandemic, Equatorial Guinea has been uniquely able to advance a large-scale gas megaproject and make substantive improvements to its foreign relations and domestic regulatory framework. Now, the country is prioritizing economic diversification via industrialization and downstream industry to drive a post-COVID-19 recovery. 
For the past eighteen months, Equatorial Guinea has been weathering a storm. With the onset of Coronavirus and subsequent drop in crude oil prices, sub-Saharan Africa’s small but mighty oil producer was hit with dual economic shocks that exacerbated existing negative growth. In August 2020, the government and prime minister of Equatorial Guinea tendered their resignations due to the inability to achieve economic stability in the wake of the pandemic, then were reappointed by H.E. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo four days later. Then, as the pandemic began to turn a corner with the rollout of vaccines, a series of explosions occurred at a military barracks in Bata in March, injuring more than 700 people and causing extensive damage to residential areas.
Yet among the chaos, the Central African nation has emerged stronger, more resilient and more responsive to the needs of its people than before. As businesses faced closures and personnel layoffs, the government implemented a new decree amending tax regulations to support small- and medium-sized enterprises.
As the oil and gas industry halted capital expenditures, Equatorial Guinea moved forward with the construction of its flagship gas megaproject, in partnership with foreign operators. And as the world became increasingly divided amidst border closures and the discovery of new variants of COVID-19, government officials from Equatorial Guinea forged closer diplomatic relations with both African and non-African allies.
In seeking to sustain engagement with global investors, Energy Capital&#038;Power (ECP) – the continent’s premier investment platform – has been outspoken about Equatorial Guinea’s ongoing opportunities for foreign investors, organizing a webinar last April to address the impact of COVID-19 and delineate mitigation measures. In April, ECP, in partnership with the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons, announced the launch of its Africa Energy Series (AES): Equatorial Guinea 2021 campaign – comprising a report and documentary – that will serve as a critical tool to navigate the energy investment landscape of one of Africa’s more mature petroleum-producing markets.
COVID-19 and the National Economy
On a global scale, Equatorial Guinea has experienced a relatively low number of Coronavirus cases and has been diligent about quarantine and social distancing measures to protect its population. With the first case reported on March 14, 2020, the virus was slow to spread, until peaking in mid-July and declining to a rate of roughly 50 new cases per day as of June 2021, with vaccines administered free-of-charge at La Paz, Malabo Regional Hospital and all Community Medical Centers. In addition to mobilizing economic and material resources by Presidential Decree to curb the spread of the virus in its own country – as well as defining minimum allocations for public health and safety in the state budget – Equatorial Guinea donated $2 million dollars to China as an act of solidarity in its fight against COVID-19. 
As with most African countries with small, dispersed populations and low infection rates, the ramifications of COVID-19 for Equatorial Guinea have been largely economic, as the country derives about three-quarters of its state revenue from oil exports. The drop in global oil demand – coupled with a decline in household consumption and slowdown in business activities due to lockdowns, border closures and other measures designed to contain the spread of the virus – led real GDP to decline by 6.1% in 2020 and investment to shrink by 35%. That said, the economy is expected to grow by 2.6% in 2021 owing to the successful completion of the Alen Gas Monetization project and projected recovery of the global economy by the second half of the year, accompanied by a surge in oil demand. To initiate a post-COVID-19 recovery, Equatorial Guinea is continuing its diversification drive that targets industrialization and the creation of value-added industries, transforming crude resources into downstream industries such as refining, chemical manufacturing, construction and related services. Its ongoing Year of Investment initiative features several capital-intensive projects that are open to investors and represent a combined one billion dollars in foreign direct investment.
Equatorial Guinea Abroad 
Building on the foundation laid by the Year of Energy campaign in 2019, Equatorial Guinea has become an emergent actor on the global energy stage, and only advanced its position as a regional leader in the past year. Citigroup Head of Investment Banking Miguel Azevedo Confirms Attendance at AOG (Angola Oil and Gas) 2021 in Luanda, Angola

More than 50% of IT teams believe that employees have bad security habits. Habits they’ve developed since moving their offices into the home and that put their information, systems and employers at risk. The statistic comes from the Tessian Back to Work Security Behaviors Report (https://bit.ly/2VfndVe) that also found an age discrepancy when it came to who practiced the best security from home. Around 51% of 16–24-year-olds and 46% of 25–34-year-olds reported that they used security workarounds, while two in five people said that the security behaviours they adopted at home were very different from those they used in the office. For Anna Collard, SVP Content Strategy&#038;Evangelist at KnowBe4 AFRICA (www.KnowBe4.com), this draws a thick red marker around the need to ensure that people and security training remain a priority while offices continue with hybrid ways of working.
“People adopt different behaviours at home as a rule,” she adds. “It is home, after all. There has to be a solid mental shift now that the home has become the office, and this shift involves making sure that the same security check boxes that were ticked at the office are also ticked at home. This is even more important because cyber criminals are taking advantage of system and employee vulnerabilities right now, and really going in on the offensive.”
Now is the right time to implement policies and approaches that take hybrid workplaces and requirements into account. The survey mentioned above also found that 67% of IT decision makers believe that phishing emails will increase as people move back to the office. And there is a discrepancy between how IT sees security when office work returns and how employees see it. Only 57% of employees think that they will follow security protocols once back in the office compared with 70% of IT professionals.
“Cybercriminals have cottoned on to the fact that people will move back into the office with a slightly less than robust approach to security,” says Collard. “They will forget to report mistakes, potentially open up new avenues of risk to the business or get caught by the tide of phishing emails that have become rampant over the past few months.”
People are people. The pandemic has been punishing. Implementing further punishments for making simple cyber security mistakes will only make things worse. What’s needed is a focus on training and positive reinforcement that reminds people of why security is important, and how to keep their side clean. Training that puts them in front of simulated ransomware or phishing emails and that teaches them security best practice, and rewards those who do well. This should be done consistently and in a way that engages with people in the limited time they have.
“By giving your people the tools they need to combat security threats and recognise risks, you are empowering them and adding that extra layer of security to your business,” concludes Collard. “Methodical and repeated simulations combined with training allows for IT teams to trust in their people, and for employees to remain aware of the threat actors that wait for them to make the simplest of mistakes. This is the best way to help your business remain ahead of security best practice and for your people to thwart social engineering attacks.”
