Malawi has registered five new COVID-19 cases, nine new recoveries and no new deaths. Of the new cases, four are locally transmitted: three from Blantyre and one from Kasungu Districts while one is an imported case that was identified at Mwanza border and the destination district is Mangochi District. No new deaths were registered.

Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 34,016 cases including 1,147 deaths (Case Fatality Rate is at 3.37%). Of these cases, 2,139 are imported infections and 31,877 are locally transmitted. Cumulatively, 31,908 cases have now recovered (recovery rate of 93.8%) and 134 were lost to follow-up. This brings the total number of active cases to 827. There were no new admissions in the treatment units while four cases were discharged. A total of six active cases are hospitalised: four in Blantyre, and one each in Lilongwe and Mzimba North Districts. On testing, 337 COVID-19 tests were conducted. Of these, 130 tests were through SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Diagnostic test while the rest were through RT-PCR. The positive cases out of the total translates to a positivity rate of 1.5% while a weekly positivity rate (seven days moving average) is at 2.3%.

Cumulatively, 230,514 tests have been conducted in the country so far. On COVID-19 vaccination, cumulatively 276,657 doses have been administered in the country with 987 being administered in 24 hours.

Though we are observing a reduced number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in our country, let me inform the public that COVID-19 is still spreading across the globe and other countries are reportedly battling a third wave of the pandemic with different variants being reported. I would like to inform those planning to travel outside the country to take keen interest on the COVID-19 situation in the destination country and only travel if it is essential, otherwise we still encourage the public to avoid non-essential travel. Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. In the event that you need to travel please adhere to the requirements of the country of destination.

Let me encourage everyone travelers inclusive to get vaccinated so as to reduce the risk of developing COVID-19 severe disease. It is important to take steps to protect yourself and others from COVID-19:

South Africa’s largest ground handling company, BidAir Services will be changing hands. National Aviation Services (NAS) (www.NAS.aero), Colossal Africa and a consortium comprised of the current executive management team have signed an agreement to acquire BidAir Services from the Bidvest Group. The closing of the acquisition is subject to fulfilling final requirements from the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) that manages South African airports as well as other regulatory approvals.

BidAir Services provides quality-handling services including passenger and ramp handling, load control and operations, cleaning, toilet and water services, amongst others at nine South African airports. The airports include three main international gateways &#8211; O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg, Cape Town International and King Shaka International in Durban. BidAir’s clientele of over 28 major airlines includes international carriers such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air France, Ethiopian Airlines and RwandAir.
Once the transaction is complete and regulatory approvals are obtained, BidAir Services will join the largest airport services network in Africa – NAS. 
Discussing the acquisition, Hassan El-Houry, Group CEO of NAS said: “NAS prides itself on its global expertise and local knowledge. We believe that the success of the aviation industry in Africa is tied to its economic prosperity and have made significant investments into the industry across the continent. We look forward to adding BidAir Services, the largest South African ground handling company to our expanding network.”

With its experienced management team and dedicated workforce, we can add value by reinforcing its capabilities, training and investment into the company to further enhance its position in the local market. With NAS, Colossal Africa and BidAir Services joining hands, we will ensure the highest level of airport handling services in South Africa.”
Following the acquisition, NAS will also focus on training to develop the knowledge and skills of local South African youth while offering more employment opportunities and career options with an emphasis on employment equity. One of the key offerings will also include the integration of IT and healthcare to support civil aviation and government authorities during emergencies such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.  
Established in 2003, NAS is one of the leading aviation service providers in 20 countries across Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.
El-Houry added: “NAS is the largest ground handler in Africa and this acquisition will further cement our position in the continent’s largest market. We will be growing our footprint with a presence in over 55 airports, managing more than 50 lounges with over 8,000 employees of 65 different nationalities at the core of our worldwide network.”

469 people have tested positive to the disease, from a sample size of 4,194 tested in the last 24 hours. Our positivity rate is at 11.2%. 

Total confirmed positive cases are now 156,787 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,645,209.
From the cases 437 are Kenyans while 32 are foreigners. 300 are males and 169 are females. The youngest is a six-month-old-infant while the oldest is 91 years.

304 patients have recovered from the disease, 187 are from Home Based &#038; Isolation Care &#038; 117 are from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries now stand at 106,588 of which 77,604 are from Home Based Care &#038; Isolation &#038; 28,984 are from various health facilities.
19 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours with one having occurred in the last 24hrs, 10 on diverse dates within the last one month, while 8 are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits. This now pushes cumulative fatalities to 2,622.
A total of 1,443 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,872 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.  207 patients are in the ICU, 43 of whom are on ventilatory support &#038; 133 on supplemental oxygen. 31 patients are on observation.
Another 176 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 163 of them in general wards and 13 in High Dependency Units (HDU).

Malawi has registered 14 new COVID-19 cases, 23 new recoveries and one new death. All new cases are locally transmitted: 10 from Blantyre, two from Lilongwe, and one each from Chitipa and Ntcheu Districts. One new death was registered from Blantyre. To the families that have lost their loved during this pandemic, may you find peace, hope and love during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
 Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 34,011 cases including 1,147 deaths (Case Fatality Rate is at 3.37%). Of these cases, 2,138 are imported infections and 31,873 are locally transmitted. Cumulatively, 31,899 cases have now recovered (recovery rate of 93.8%) and 134 were lost to follow-up. This brings the total number of active cases to 831. There were two new admissions in the treatment units while two cases were discharged. A total of 10 active cases are hospitalised: five each in Lilongwe and four in Blantyre, and one in Mzimba North Districts. On testing, 739 COVID-19 tests were conducted. Of these, 175 tests were through SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Diagnostic test while the rest were through RT-PCR. The positive cases out of the total translates to a positivity rate of 1.9% while a weekly positivity rate (seven days moving average) is at 2.3%. Cumulatively, 230,117 tests have been conducted in the country so far. On COVID-19 vaccination, cumulatively 275,670 doses have been administered in the country with 4,730 being administered in 24 hours. Let me remind the public that though we have COVID-19 pandemic, our focus should also be on the other disease conditions that continue affecting us such as Malaria, TB, HIV, Non Communicable Diseases (High blood pressure, Diabetes), Sexual and Reproductive health and immunization services. Let me point out that essential services tackling these conditions are still being provided in all our health facilities and designated outreach clinics. Let me encourage the public to seek health care early as whenever necessary. Those on long term treatment should ensure that they have pre-stocked the drugs and that they are adhering to the medication. Let me also encourage parents and guardians to ensure that children under the age of two years have received their vaccines according to the immunization schedule and thatgrowth is being monitored for those under five years. Please take note that the vaccination exercise is still in progress in all Government and CHAM facilities and let me appeal to those that are aged 18 years and above to utilize this opportunity to get vaccinated. The public is further informed that we still have adequate stocks of vaccine in the country. It is important to note that to get protected from COVID-19 is critically important so as to avert severe illness or death. Getting vaccinated is one of the steps you can take to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 particularly people at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 i.e. the elderly and those with underlying conditions such as Hypertension (BP) and diabetes (Sugar disease).
