In response to key findings from the first ever Middle East and Africa study on the State of the Printing Industry – conducted by Canon in conjunction with print industry news leader ME Printer in mid-2020 – CCNA is tapping into the significant gap between customer demands and service offerings in the print market.

This is a summary of what was said by UNICEF spokesperson James Elder – to whom quoted text may be attributed –  at today&#39;s press briefing at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

&#8220;The crisis in Tigray has entered its sixth month with no clear end in sight.
&#8220;More than one million people have been displaced, and fighting continues. Access and security remain serious issues.
&#8220;We have been very concerned from the onset about the harm this crisis will cause to children. Such fears are now being realized.
&#8220;This is a protection crisis. What is emerging is a disturbing picture of severe and ongoing child rights violations.
&#8220;This is also an education and nutrition emergency, and I saw extensive destruction to the systems and essential services on which children rely.
Education
&#8220;Children in Tigray have been hit by COVID-19 then conflict. That means 1.4 million children have been out of school for more than a full year (since March 2020). Yes, not a day of school in 13 months.
&#8220;I met a 16-year-old girl, Merhawit who fled fighting in the west of Tigray, and walked – with her baby brother on her back – for 300km. Yes, she walked 300km in broken flip flops. Before the conflict, she was top of her class in physics. Now she was searching for food and hasn’t seen a classroom in more than a year.
&#8220;A decision to reopen schools, however, is contingent on (1) security; (2) rehabilitation works &#8211; the Ministry of Education estimates that up to 25 per cent of schools have been damaged; and (3) reopening schools requires the relocation of the hundreds of thousands of IDPs who are currently sheltering in school premises. 
Water
&#8220;A recent assessment in 13 towns by UNICEF and partners revealed that more than half of the boreholes are non-functional.  These were advanced systems – with generators and electrical circuitry – and most have been damaged and looted.
&#8220;I saw an example of this destruction in a health clinic 100km from Mekelle. This had an entire new operation ward devoted to emergency c-sections for mothers and emergency surgery &#8211; that opened in 2020, with the support of Rotary in Belgium. Everything &#8211; X-ray machines, oxygen, and mattresses for patients – are gone. Operating beds and incubators for babies have been broken and turned upside down. A doctor there told me “It had all the services a mother and baby needed. It was a life-saving place. There was no reason for forces to come here. They came here for vandalizing and looting.”
&#8220;According to assessments, violence and looting have left a majority of health care facilities in the region not functioning.
&#8220;The sanitation situation is another matter of grave concern. Conditions in many of the displacement sites are poor. They are overcrowded, unsanitary and unsafe .. as such they magnify risks of exploitation of children, and make it impossible for people to practice COVID-19 prevention measures.
&#8220;From a health perspective, the presence of large numbers of displaced people is a ticking time bomb, especially as the rainy season approaches – that’s next month &#8211; when there will be a grave risk of cholera and other water-borne diseases.
Protection and gender-based violence
&#8220;The personal statements I received from children who had been raped or testimonies of women who were victims of sexual violence were harrowing.
&#8220;You will all be aware that the President of Ethiopia, the Minister of Women, Children and Youth, the IASC Principals and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) have spoken against multiple cases of rape and sexual violence
&#8220;I heard traumatic stories from survivors, one as young as 14. I heard reports of gang rapes. The level of cruelty described in these attacks was bewildering.
&#8220;This year, from the 1st January to 16 April, just one centre that UNICEF supports has received an average of three reports of cases of gender-based violence per day.
Nutrition
&#8220;Fighting broke out just as people should have been harvesting.
&#8220;That’s their income for a year. Many also had cattle stolen. They have lost access to fertilisers and vaccines for their livestock.
&#8220;And now they should be planting. But more than 1 million people are displaced and as such cannot access their land.
&#8220;As such, we are seeing a spike in malnutrition in a region that had already seen steep year-on-year increases in malnourished children requiring life-saving treatment prior to this crisis.
&#8220;In response, since November last year, UNICEF has provided emergency supplies including drug kits, nutrition supplies, school-in-a-carton kits and early childhood development kits. 
&#8220;In WASH, UNICEF is leading on efforts to rehabilitate damaged water schemes, supply of water through trucking, and the provision of hygiene supplies. Through these efforts, more than 640,000 people have received safe water for personal use.
&#8220;Our priority in the education sector is the reopening of schools while simultaneously working with implementing partners to establish temporary learning spaces for refugees, IDPs and host communities.
&#8220;We have supported partners to kick-start 22 mobile health and nutrition teams which are reaching tens of thousands of children and women in ten of the areas with the highest need. They distribute drug kits and support emergency health care and nutrition. They operate six days a week and use the seventh day to restock supplies.
&#8220;But again, even for these brave and frontline mobile health and nutrition teams, security remains an issue. I spoke with one team leader who explained how his team had their ambulance stolen, and had to walk three days back to their health clinic.
&#8220;And as of right before this briefing, UNICEF has received credible reports of at least 16 incidents that impacted the activities of these mobile health and nutrition teams … in just the last two weeks.
&#8220;Nine were reported in the Eastern Region where the health workers had to leave the location due to fighting and direct threat from armed forces.
&#8220;The staff members were denied access to the programme locations and in some cases were threatened with death. In three locations the teams were forcibly relocated to other locations.
&#8220;Survivors of sexual assault have been provided with medical assistance, psychosocial support and dignity kits at a centre that has been supported by UNICEF. We are also supporting partners to deploy more than 160 social workers to provide child protection case management for vulnerable children including unaccompanied and separated children; and psychosocial support in IDP and refugee camps in Tigray and affected neighbouring woredas in Afar and Amhara.
&#8220;UNICEF Ethiopia’s appeal for Tigray stands at US$47.6 million. More than half is unfunded.&#8221;

Coronavirus – Malawi: COVID-19 update (19 April 2021)

Kenya recorded 241 positive Covid-19 cases on Monday bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 151,894. The cases were drawn from a sample size of 2,515 tested in the last 24 hours. Cumulative tests conducted so far are 1,605,847.

From the cases, 228 are Kenyans while 13 are foreigners. 135 are males and 106 are females. The youngest is a-seven-year-old child while the oldest is 90 years. The positivity rate is at 9.6%.

In terms of County distribution; Nairobi county registered 153, cases Meru 18, Uasin Gishu 14, Machakos 10, Kiambu 9, Nakuru 9, Mombasa 8, Nandi 6, Kitui 3, Bungoma 2, Kajiado 2, Nyandarua 2 while Kilifi, Murang’a , Nyeri, West Pokot  and Kakamega recorded one case each.

20 deaths were also reported, one having occurred in 24 hours, 11 on diverse dates within the last one month, while 8 are late deaths conducted from facility record audits. This pushes cumulative fatalities to 2,501.

A total of 1,651 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,161 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.  250 patients are in the ICU, 57 of whom are on ventilatory support &#038; 150 on supplemental oxygen. 43 patients are on observation.

Another 201 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 190 of them in general wards while 11 are in High Dependency Units (HDU).

636 patients recovered from the disease, 487 from Home Based &#038; Isolation Care while 149 were from various health facilities. Total recoveries now stand at 102,278. Cumulative discharges are 74,292 from Home Based Care &#038; Isolation. Those from various health facilities are 27,986.

VACCINATION: A total of 702,170 persons have so far been vaccinated against COVID-19 disease across the country. Of this, 397,539 are those aged 58 years or above, 141,146 are Health workers, 106,147 are teachers while 57,338 are Security Officers.

Men continue to be vaccinated at a higher rate compared to women with 393,261 of those vaccinated being men while 308,526 are women.

Nairobi has the highest number of persons vaccinated to date with 223,992 followed by Nakuru with 42,145, Uasin Gishu is third with 35,543, Kiambu is fourth at 35,244 and Nyeri is fifth with 25,345.

Vaccination numbers from the other counties is as follows: Kakamega 18,001, Kajiado 17,791 Murang’a 17,534, Kisumu 17,424, Meru 17,392,  Mombasa 16,996, Nyandarua 14,260, Trans Nzoia 13,954, Laikipia 13,889, Bungoma 13,442, Machakos 12,777, Nandi 12,139, Embu 11,689, Kirinyaga 10,946, Kericho 10,886, Kitui 10,192 Homa Bay 9,679, Kisii 8,660, Vihiga 8,614, Busia 7,418, Nyamira 6,427, Baringo 6,363, Bomet 6,211, Siaya 5,996 Elgeyo Marakwet 5,399 Migori 5,259 Tharaka Nithi 5,185 Narok 4,873, Makueni 4,873, Kilifi 4,332, Samburu 2,923, West Pokot 2,857, Taita Taveta 2,650,Turkana 2,627, Kwale 2,409, Wajir 1,928, Garissa 1,766, Mandera 1,565 and Isiolo 1,392. Lamu (469) Marsabit (472) and Tana River (675) are the only counties where less than 1,000 persons have been vaccinated since the exercise kicked off.

FIFA (www.FIFA.com) President Gianni Infantino has called for respect and dialogue as he expressed FIFA&#39;s strong disapproval of the proposed European breakaway league project, and has requested that the concerned parties consider their position in line with respecting the institutions that exist to protect the interest of national, European and global football.

&#8220;FIFA is an organisation which is built on values, the true values of sport,&#8221; said the FIFA President in his address to the 45th Ordinary UEFA Congress in Montreux, Switzerland. &#8220;It is an organisation that is built on our statutes, the statutes that define the institutional framework, with the pyramid, with FIFA, the confederations, the associations, the leagues, the clubs, the players. And at FIFA, we can only strongly disapprove the creation of a super league which is a closed shop, which is a breakaway from the current institutions, from the leagues, from the associations, from UEFA and from FIFA, which is outside of the system. There is no doubt whatsoever of FIFA&#39;s disapproval for this.&#8221;
The FIFA President emphasised his full support to the European sports model, a successful model of openness and inclusivity, promotion and relegation, and a model that he promoted in his 16 years at UEFA: &#8220;FIFA is here, and I am here today as FIFA President, to bring full support to European football, to UEFA, and the 55 member associations of UEFA and of FIFA, to the leagues, clubs, players and to fans. To all the fans, all over Europe, and actually all over the world as well.&#8221;
&#8220;We can see that there is a lot to throw away for the short-term financial gain of some,&#8221; the FIFA President added. &#8220;People need to think very carefully, they need to reflect, and they need to assume responsibility. They need to think not only of their shareholders, but they need to think about all the people, of all the fans, of all those who have contributed to make European football what it is today. It goes back not only decades, it goes back more than one hundred years. People &#8211; with love, with passion, with commitment &#8211; have created all this. And we need to protect this. It is our task.&#8221;
&#8220;FIFA is a democratic organisation, an organisation that is open,&#8221; the FIFA President concluded. &#8220;Everyone can bring ideas and proposals, but always with respect for the institutions, leagues, associations, UEFA and FIFA. I understand as well that in these particular days, emotions are very high, but we need to always keep the line. Football is hope, and it is our responsibility to make hope reality. Multiyear Partnership Makes New Fortress Energy the Official Energy Partner of the BAL; Inaugural BAL Season Will Take Place May 16-30 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) (www.theBAL.com) and New Fortress Energy Inc. (NFE), a global energy infrastructure company founded to help accelerate the world’s transition to clean energy, today announced a multiyear partnership that makes NFE a Founding Partner and the Official Energy Partner of the BAL.  The inaugural BAL season will tip off Sunday, May 16 at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, with 12 teams from across Africa competing in the new professional league.  The first BAL Finals will be held Sunday, May 30.
Through the partnership, which marks NFE’s first-ever collaboration with a sports league, NFE will use the game of basketball to advocate for affordable and clean energy solutions and increase awareness of environmental initiatives across the continent.  Together, NFE and the BAL will collaborate with international NGO Trees for the Future (www.Trees.org) to launch “Threes for Trees,” an initiative that aims to donate more than 100,000 trees to farmers and non-profit environmental organizations in Senegal and other African countries.  NFE and the BAL will contribute three trees for every three-pointer made during the BAL season and will engage fans in the initiative on social media.
Following the conclusion of the inaugural BAL season, NFE and the BAL will host an Africa Youth Summit in Dakar, Senegal, where youth leaders, energy industry representatives and other stakeholders will discuss the links between clean energy, economic growth and public health, with a focus on creating sustainable development and educational programs for African youth.

Champions from the national leagues in Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia earned their participation in the inaugural BAL season.  The remaining six teams, which come from Algeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Rwanda, secured their participation through BAL qualifying tournaments conducted by FIBA Regional Office Africa across the continent in late 2019.
The BAL groups and additional details about the league will be announced in the coming weeks.

Forty-six patients have been diagnosed positive for COVID-19 in tests carried out in the past three days at Quarantine Centers in Gash Barka, Southern Red Sea, Northern Red Sea, Central, and Anseba Regions.

Out of these, eighteen patients are from Quarantine Centers in Goluj (6), Adibara (5), Ali-Ghidir (4), and Mensura (3), Gash Barka region.  Seventeen patients are from Quarantine Center in Assab, Southern Red Sea Region.  Seven patients are from Quarantine Center in Massawa, Northern Red Sea Region.  Two patients are from Quarantine Centers in Senafe (1), and Adi-Quala (1), Southern Region.  One patient is from Quarantine Center in Asmara, Central Region.  The last patient is from Quarantine Center in Keren, Anseba Region.
On the other hand, forty-six patients who have been receiving medical treatment in hospitals in the Southern (41), Northern Red Sea (3), and Central (2), Regions have recovered fully and have been discharged from these facilities.
The total number of recovered patients has accordingly risen to 3334 while the number of deaths stands at ten.
The total number of confirmed cases in the country to-date has increased to 3537.

This new division, a first of its kind in South Africa, is an offering of safeguarding, monitoring and seeking accountability for the children of South Africa who have been or may be impacted by abuse in SPORT.

Our work on the Bob Hewitt (Former Professional tennis player and a Grand Slam title holder) historical case of sexual abuse, the Parktown boys&#39; sexual abuse and rape case by water polo coach (Collan Rex), and the ongoing Bryanston High School sexual abuse case by netball coach (Aleshan Moodley), have shown the challenges encountered by victims, prompting the establishment of this initiative to commit to making sport safe for children.

Voices in South African sport have come out in support of this project. Our panel includes Simphiwe Dludlu (Soccer), Olivia Jasriel (Survivor of abuse in Sport) , Miranda Jordan (WMACA &#8211; Founder), Luke Lamprecht (WMACA &#8211; Advocacy) and Babalwa Latsha (Rugby)

Attending will be Corne Krige (Former Springbok Captain Rugby), Kalusha Bwalya(Former Zambian International footballer), Kgothatso Montjane (Tennis), Gert Strydom(Professional Boxing coach), Tebogo Moloi (Soccer), Cara Frew (Equestrian),  Sipho Ngwenya (Boxing), Barend van Graan (Former CEO Blue Bulls), Neils Momberg (Cricket) Lwandile Simelane (SASCOC&#39;s Gender Commision Chairperson and Ria Ledwaba (Vice President of SAFA)

Further endorsements include video support from Tendai &#8220;Beast&#8221; Mtawarira (South African Rugby), Benni Mccarthy (South African Footballer), Penny Heyns (Holder of Olympic 100m &#038; 200m breaststroke title).

On Wednesday Team Qhubeka ASSOS (www.TeamQhubeka.com) will line up at the second of the three Ardennes Classics, La Fleche Wallonne. The Belgian UCI World Tour classic splits the other two Ardennes races, Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

La Fleche Wallonne will see a familiar route for the 85th edition of the race, including 3 ascents of its famous climb, the Mur de Huy, with the finish line being at the summit of the final ascent.
The Mur de Huy will no doubt be the main feature of the race, with a large group expected to arrive at the foot of the final 1.2km climb again, to &#8220;sprint&#8221; up the steep gradient which maxes out at a gradient of 26%.
Team Qhubeka ASSOS will be looking to its punchy climbers to do the business on Wednesday, with Simon Clarke, Sergio Henao and Fabio Aru being supported by Sander Armee, Sean Bennett, Bert-Jan Lindeman and Robert Power.
