As at 17 April 2021, Zimbabwe had 37 699 confirmed cases, including 35 005 recoveries and 1 552 deaths. To date, a total of 276 095 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

1,027 people have tested positive to Covid-19 on Saturday bringing the number of confirmed positive cases in the country to 151,287. Figure derived from a sample size of 7,184 tested. Country’s positivity rate is at 14.3%.

From the cases 1,009 are Kenyans while 18 are foreigners. 600 are males and 427 are females. The youngest is a two-month-old baby while the oldest is 110 years. Cumulative tests conducted in the country so far stands at 1,599,668.

20 deaths have been reported, 8 of the deaths having occurred on diverse dates within the last one month, while 12 are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 2,463.

382 patients recovered from the disease, 267 from Home Based &#038; Isolation Care while 115 are from various health facilities across the country. Total recoveries now stand at 101,362 of which, 73,598 are from Home Based Care &#038; Isolation &#038; 27,764 are from various health facilities.

A total of 1,653 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 5,798 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 264 patients are in the ICU, 55 of whom are on ventilatory support &#038; 161 on supplemental oxygen. 48 patients are on observation.

Another 239 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 224 of them in general wards and 15 in High Dependency Units (HDU).

Clarification over variance in Covishield vaccine dose administration in some counties.

National taskforce on Vaccine Deployment &#038; Vaccinations says variance attributed to decision by some manufacturers to include some overage or extra quantity in a vial to cater for losses when vaccines are being drawn into syringes. Each Covishield vaccine vial contains 10 doses.

Depending on the type of syringes used, the remaining quantity in the vial may yield one or two extra doses. Taskforce says the same has been observed during use of the Covishield vaccine in Kenya.

The experience has been observed in other countries conducting COVID-19 Vaccination, such as the USA, due to the use of low dead volume syringes. This in effect leads to a negative wastage rate where more people are vaccinated from one vial than the expected number of doses.

According to the taskforce, Wastage of the vaccines is expected to vary from facility to facility and county to county. Kenya is targeting an average wastage rate of 10% or less to cater for both areas with low wastage and those with high wastage.

The 30-year-old former Vuelta a España champion finds himself on a short racing break following his recent participation at the Tour of the Basque Country.

“I’ve now done 23 race days and also some cyclo-cross racing at the start of the year and I’m just really happy to be part of this Qhubeka ASSOS (TeamQhubeka.com) family,” said Aru. “It’s a really good team and I enjoy every moment that I spend with my teammates and all of the staff. The feeling is really, really good.”
Earlier Aru ruled himself out of possible selection for the World Cyclo-cross Championships to focus on the team’s final pre-season training camp in January.
“My season started at Tour de la Provence, then Haut Var, Royal Bernard Drôme Classic, Paris-Nice and the Basque Country; and so my next races will be Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
&#8220;Riding the Giro this year was not on my programme so I look forward to watching this beautiful race and of course supporting my Team Qhubeka ASSOS teammates,” said Aru.
The former Italian champion is relishing the return to consistent racing following a few disrupted years.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed every single race that I’ve done right from the start of the season and I know that I’m still building my form because in the last two years I’ve had a number of problems.
“In 2019 I had surgery which meant I had to stop for three months, then I was back for some races and I stopped after 10 days of the Vuelta a Espana. Last year I did Colombia and some races in August but then I stopped again after a week of the Tour and I did little more 20 race days; for a pro that’s not a lot and so I’m still building my condition.
“Every single race that I’ve done from February, including the cyclo-cross, is with the aim of getting me back up to that good level. I’m still not 100% yet but I’m still progressing, and for that I’m really happy.
“In terms of my next goals for myself and the team: well I’m really happy with our strategy as we are taking it race by race, assessing how I’m progressing and feeling, and then establishing those goals together. The main one is to be 100%, and at a good level of racing. At the Basque Country, for instance, I had 20 riders top riders in front of me but know that I’m still progressing and for that I am happy; the body is improving race by race and for that I’m smiling on the bike and enjoying every moment of it.
“Qhubeka ASSOS is not only a team but a family, every single person here is working for one another as well as for the Qhubeka Charity and our partners. For instance, to see the recently released Qhubeka supporters jersey just highlights again what our purpose is – it’s incredible – and so I want to give my best for my team and teammates.
“I want to say thanks to every member of the team, who believes in me every single day and this is a really big pleasure for me to be part of this team, part of this family,” said Aru.

Malawi has registered 17 new COVID-19 cases, 26 new recoveries and two new deaths. Of the new cases, 15 are locally transmitted: eight from Blantyre, five from Lilongwe and one each from Mzimba North and Zomba Districts while two cases are imported and were identified at Mwanza border; their destination districts are still being investigated. Two new deaths were registered in 24 hours; one each from Balaka and Zomba Districts. To the families that have lost their loved during this pandemic, may you find peace, hope and love during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.

Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 33,919 cases including 1,136 deaths (Case Fatality Rate is at 3.35%). Of these cases, 2,133 are imported infections and 31,786 are locally transmitted. Cumulatively, 31,717 cases have now recovered (recovery rate of 93.5%) and 134 were lost to follow-up. This brings the total number of active cases to 932. There was one new admission in the treatment units while five cases were discharged. Currently, a total of 15 active cases are hospitalised: seven each in Blantyre and Lilongwe, and one in Kasungu Districts. On testing in 24 hours, 399 COVID-19 tests were conducted. Of these, 101 tests were through SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Diagnostic test while the rest were through RT-PCR. The positive cases out of the total (24 hours) translates to a positivity rate of 4.3% while a weekly positivity rate (seven days moving average) is at 3.9%. Cumulatively, 226,302 tests have been conducted in the country so far. On COVID-19 vaccination, cumulatively 251,368 doses have been administered in the country with 4,452 being administered in 24 hours.

As everyone is aware that COVID-19 is the disease caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, it is now a global pandemic which has disrupted our daily lives. To get protected from COVID-19 is critically important because for some people, it can cause severe illness or death. Getting vaccinated is one of many steps you can take to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Stopping a pandemic requires using all the tools available. Vaccines work with ones immune system so that the body is ready to fight the virus if it is exposed. Other preventive measures such as masks, hand washing with soap and social distancing, help reduce ones chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others. When these are combined, they offer the best protection against the virus.

Currently, we are using the AstraZeneca vaccine. For a person to be fully protected he/she is supposed to receive two doses at an interval of 12 weeks from the first dose. Those that have received the first dose are encouraged to check on the vaccination card on the next date to receive the second dose. Please take note that the vaccination exercise is still in progress in all Government and CHAM facilities and let me appeal to those that aged 18 years and above to utilize this opportunity and get vaccinated. The public is further informed that we still have adequate stocks of unexpired vaccine in the country. No one is safe until everyone else is safe. Get Vaccinated. Protect yourself.
