JOHANNESBURG, Oct 3 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The South African rand wavered on Thursday against a buoyant dollar, as tensions simmered in the Middle East following Iran&#8217;s ballistic missile attack on Israel.



At 0830 GMT, the rand was trading at 17.34 against the dollar, about 0.1% firmer than its previous close, after trading slightly weaker in earlier trade.



&#8220;The USD saw strength due to Middle East tensions and strong U.S. labour data, placing pressure on the ZAR,&#8221; said Andre Cilliers, currency strategist at TreasuryONE.



The dollar strengthened after robust U.S. jobs data on Wednesday reinforced bets that the Federal Reserve will not rush to cut interest rates in the world&#8217;s biggest economy.



The greenback saw additional demand after an Iranian missile attack on Israel on Tuesday boosted safe-haven assets.



Like other risk-sensitive currencies, the rand often takes direction from global drivers in the absence of major local factors.



&#8220;While the ZAR has been the best-performing emerging market currency, a correction was overdue after significant appreciation,&#8221; Cilliers said.



The rand has gained about 6% over the last three months.



On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the blue-chip Top-40 index last traded about 1.2% weaker.



South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was slightly firmer, with the yield down 2.5 basis points at 9.035%.

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 3 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s second-biggest grocery group SPAR&nbsp;SPPJ.J&nbsp;appointed Moegamat Reeza Isaacs as chief financial officer with effect from Jan 1, 2025, the company said in a statement on Thursday.



Isaacs was the group finance director of upmarket retailer and SPAR competitor Woolworths Holdings Limited from 2013 to 2023.



&#8220;Mr Isaacs has strong strategic and operational finance experience that will add considerable value to the company,&#8221; SPAR said in the statement.



He succeeds Mark Godfrey, whose decision to retire was announced in June. Godfrey will step back from his role as group CFO on Dec. 31.

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 1 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South African manufacturing activity increased in September, recovering from the previous month&#8217;s slump as demand rose and an interest rate cut boosted sentiment, the Absa-sponsored purchasing managers&#8217; index survey showed on Tuesday.



Absa&#8217;s seasonally adjusted PMI for the factory sector rose to 52.8 points in September from 43.6 in August, above the 50-point mark that shows growth.



&#8220;Both domestic and export demand showed signs of improvement&#8230; On the local consumer front, the recent interest rate cut adds to the expectation of a possible more positive demand story going forward,&#8221; local bank Absa, which sponsors the survey, said in a statement.



&#8220;The positive PMI results suggest that the manufacturing sector is stabilising after a turbulent period, although challenges remain, particularly in employment,&#8221; Absa said in a statement.



The 9.2-point jump in the index in September more than made up for the 8.8-point drop in August.

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 1 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The South African rand weakened in early trade on Tuesday, ahead of a purchasing managers&#8217; index (PMI) for the domestic manufacturing sector.



At 0747 GMT, the rand traded at 17.32 against the dollar, about 0.3% softer than its previous close.



The Absa PMI for September is set to be released at 0900 GMT and should shed light on conditions in South Africa&#8217;s manufacturing sector.



On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the blue-chip Top-40 index traded about 0.6% up.



South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was weaker in early deals, with the yield up 8 basis points to 8.925%.

Sept 30 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH) has signed an agreement with South Africa&#8217;s Public Investment Corporation (PIC) to invest in rail infrastructure and green energy projects, the two entities said on Monday.



IRH is a subsidiary of International Holding Company&nbsp;IHC.AD, the United Arab Emirates&#8217; (UAE) richest company, while the state-owned PIC is Africa&#8217;s largest asset manager. The PIC&#8217;s 2.89 trillion rand ($169 billion) assets under management include mining, agriculture, manufacturing, real estate and financial services investments.



IRH and PIC would cooperate on South Africa&#8217;s planned replacement of its coal-dominated power generation with cleaner sources of energy, they said in a joint statement, without giving details.



They would also seek to expand South Africa&#8217;s logistical capacity by addressing persistent freight rail and port bottlenecks which have throttled commodity exports.



South Africa&#8217;s state-owned logistics firm Transnet, which operates the country&#8217;s freight rail and ports, has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL8N3K711G&amp;linkedFromStory=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">struggled</a>&nbsp;to provide adequate services due to equipment shortages and maintenance backlogs after years of under-investment.



The agreement would also &#8220;bring underperforming and undeveloped mining assets&#8221; in South Africa to full production capacity, they said. They did not name the assets.



Earlier this year, IRH completed the acquisition of a 51% stake in Zambia&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL8N3DH25C&amp;linkedFromStory=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mopani Copper Mines</a>. The IRH has also been pursuing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3IV091&amp;linkedFromStory=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other copper assets</a>&nbsp;in Zambia as the UAE and seeks to secure critical metal supplies from Africa amid a global shift to cleaner energy.



The IRH also has operations or prospects in Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, according to its website.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 30 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The South African rand extended last week&#8217;s gains in early trade on Monday, as investors looked to a handful of data releases for further signs of an improvement in the domestic economy.



At 0650 GMT, the rand traded at 17.0375 against the dollar&nbsp;ZAR=D3, about 0.5% stronger than its closing level on Friday.



Central bank data on Monday showed a pickup in August private sector credit growth to 4.95% year-on-year&nbsp;ZACRED=ECI, a positive sign which may help Africa&#8217;s most industrialised economy build momentum in the second half of the year.



August trade&nbsp;ZATBAL=ECI&nbsp;and budget&nbsp;ZABUDM=ECI&nbsp;figures due later in the day are also expected to show improvement, reflecting better terms of trade and seasonal factors.



ETM Analytics said in a research note that the rand could break below 17 to the dollar this week as the U.S. currency remains on the defensive and inflows into the South African bond market are supportive.



The benchmark 2030 government bond&nbsp;ZAR2030=&nbsp;was flat in early deals, the yield at 8.8%.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 27 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand was steady against the dollar on Friday, as the local currency held onto recent gains amid improved risk appetite and positive sentiment at home.



At 0758 GMT, the rand traded at 17.1975 against the dollar, not far from its previous close.



The rand has been on an upward trajectory since a big interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve last week, hitting repeated 20-month highs.



Analysts say the improvement in South Africa&#8217;s risk profile following the formation of a coalition government after an election in May has also contributed to the currency&#8217;s strength.



On the stock market, the Top-40 index was down about 0.4%.



South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was stronger, with the yield down 4 basis points to 8.79%.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 26 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s donor-funded climate programme has spent just over a sixth of its allotted $11.6 billion, with a focus on expanding the power grid and preventing its coal-mining region slipping into decline as it shifts to renewables, two sources said.



A donor and a South African official involved in the plan, neither of whom were willing to be named because they were not authorised to speak publicly, said about $1.9 billion had been spent, half of it on policy-based loans to the government.



Of the rest, about $488 million had gone towards electricity, a breakdown seen by Reuters showed. The remaining quarter was for projects to revive the coal belt province, Mpumalanga, a planned green hydrogen hub and skills training, among other things.



Britain, France, Germany, the European Union and United States initially pledged $8.5 billion at COP26 climate talks in 2021. That figure &#8211; all but a fraction of it in the form of concessional loans &#8211; grew last year, as Denmark, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland joined the initiative.



Owing to its complexity, the number of donors involved and South Africa&#8217;s internal politics, the climate programme has been moving more slowly than planned, and South Africa has told donors it will not meet its 2030 emissions-reduction targets.



Environment Minister Dion George was quoted in the national press this month as saying that German officials had told him South Africa was moving away from fossil fuels too slowly.



A spokesperson for the German embassy declined to comment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-easy-win">EASY WIN?</h2>



Africa&#8217;s most industrialised nation, where 80% of the power is generated from coal, is seen as an easy win for donor-assisted green energy programmes, with its well-developed infrastructure and abundant sun and wind.



But politicians are nervous about winding down a 160-year-old coal business that directly employs 90,000 people and supports whole communities, even while it poisons their air and water.



&#8220;It&#8217;s about &#8230;the mine workers, the coal truckers&#8230;the entire ecosystem (around coal) whose material interests are threatened,&#8221; said Joanne Yawitch, head of the Just Energy Transition at President Cyril Ramaphosa&#8217;s climate commission.



Yawitch said the focus was on new skills and economic opportunities for coal-belt residents, especially its most vulnerable: informal workers, youths and women.



&#8220;With South Africa&#8217;s levels of poverty and unemployment&#8230;if we don&#8217;t take care of the needs of that community&#8230;(the) transition&#8230;will just be resisted all the way.&#8221;



Burning coal has rendered South Africa one of the world&#8217;s most carbon intensive economies, central bank data shows. South Africa is in the top 15 greenhouse gas emitters, ahead of France and Britain.



The policy loans have funded reforms such as a law enacted last month to bring private companies and competition into a power sector long dominated by state monopoly Eskom, the donor source said.



Grants are only $676 million of the total, and Ramaphosa has complained that they make up too small a portion.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 25 (Reuters) &#8211; South African lender Investec has opened an office in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), it said on Wednesday, in a bid to access deep pools of wealth from wealthy families and individuals in the region.



The DIFC has been luring global banks, asset and wealth managers as well as hedge funds, and it is now seeing rising interest from South African entities as investors look for safe havens, a neutral political stance and favourable policies.



Investec will offer its clients advisory and arranging services in private banking, wealth and investment management, and corporate and investment banking, Cumesh Moodliar, CEO of Investec Bank Limited said in a statement.



&#8220;We see a sustained emergence of high-net-worth individuals in Dubai and the Gulf as the region offers connectivity, quality services and growth opportunities for domestic and international companies,&#8221; Moodliar said.



By setting itself up in DIFC, Investec can use Dubai as a gateway to more than $3 trillion of private wealth, Salmaan Jaffery, Chief Business Development Officer of DIFC Authority said.



The Investec Group operates in two anchor geographies, South Africa and the United Kingdom, as well as the United States, Ireland, the Channel Islands, Mauritius, India and Continental Europe.



Investec did not say how many staff it would have in its new DIFC office.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 25 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand extended its recent rally on Wednesday, strengthening to a fresh 20-month high against the dollar.



At 0810 GMT, the rand traded at 17.22 against the U.S. currency, 0.3% stronger than its previous close and its strongest level since early February 2023.



Analysts have partly attributed the rand&#8217;s current strength to positive sentiment in the wake of interest rate cuts by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and U.S. Federal Reserve.



&#8220;We are likely to continue to trade in a R17.20/R17.40 range for now,&#8221; said Andre Cilliers, currency strategist at TreasuryONE.



On Thursday South Africa-focused investors will shift their focus to August producer inflation figures, which will shed further light on the extent to which price pressures are easing.



Slowing consumer inflation helped convince the SARB to cut rates last week.



Earlier on Wednesday central bank data showed a composite leading business cycle indicator rose 0.7% month on month in July. The indicator reflects vehicle sales, business confidence, money supply and other factors in Africa&#8217;s most industrialised economy.



The Johannesburg Stock Exchange&#8217;s Top-40 index was up 1.5% after touching a new high earlier in the session.



South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was slightly weaker, with the yield up 1.5 basis points to 8.86%.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 23 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand softened against the dollar on Monday, retreating from a fresh 20-month high it hit earlier in the session.



At 0820 GMT, the rand traded at 17.455 against the greenback&nbsp;ZAR=D3, 0.27% weaker than its previous close.



The local unit earlier hit 17.37 per dollar, its strongest level since February 2023, as it continued to rally following strong&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3L20LG&amp;linkedFromStory=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gains last week</a>&nbsp;after a super-sized interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. That was followed by a rate cut by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) along expected lines.



The local currency benefited from the positive sentiment in the wake of the Fed and SARB rate cuts, said Andre Cilliers, currency strategist at TreasuryONE.



On the stock market, the Top-40&nbsp;.JTOPI&nbsp;index was up 0.4%.



South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond&nbsp;ZAR2030=&nbsp;was flat, with the yield at 8.88%.
