The role of the private sector in higher education

The first-ever Future of Education Summit brought to light pressing issues regarding the transformation of institutions of higher learning, particularly universities and T-VET colleges, in Africa. The goal is to adapt to the changing student population and ensure that these institutions can adequately support students to improve throughput. In an exclusive interview with CNBC Africa's Rofhiwa Madzena, South Africa's Minister of Higher Education and Training, Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize, discussed the challenges faced by private institutions aiming to enter the higher education space. Prof Mkhize highlighted the importance of aligning T-VET college curriculums with universities to equip students with skills that meet industry demands and allow for seamless transitions between the two. She also emphasized the need to make the country's education system more attractive to prevent the brain drain of young talent going abroad for studies. The Minister underlined the vital role of the private sector in enhancing higher education and the necessity for partnerships to bridge the skills gap between academia and the job market. She called for a shift in mindset within the private sector to view collaboration with educational institutions as a crucial responsibility for shaping the workforce of the future. Additionally, Prof Mkhize stressed the significance of integrating practical training institutions with universities to ensure the inclusion of artisans and individuals with technical skills essential for economic growth. She cited the importance of creating linkages and alignment across different educational levels to meet the evolving skills requirements of the workforce.
