Rwanda’s public transport to start using cashless payment system

Altron, a technology company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, has recently partnered with Pascal Technologies to introduce a cashless payment system for motorcycle public transport services in Rwanda. This collaboration aims to provide a seamless and integrated payment solution that aligns with Rwanda's infrastructure development and ICT goals. The Managing Director of Pascal Technologies, Pascal Ndizeye, and the Managing Director of Altron, Ike Dube, joined CNBC Africa to discuss this groundbreaking partnership. Altron, a South Africa-based company, has been strategically expanding its operations across Africa, with Rwanda being its latest market entry. The partnership with Pascal Technologies was a natural fit, considering the country's focus on technological advancements and the company's expertise in delivering solutions to support such developments. Pascal Technologies, having been in the market since 2013, has a deep understanding of the challenges faced in the transport sector in Rwanda. The investment made through this partnership will primarily focus on providing devices for motorcycle drivers, such as GPS tracking devices and counting meters, to enhance security and operational efficiency. Additionally, the collaboration aims to expand these solutions to other countries in the region and continent. Pascal Technologies currently works with over 7,000 registered drivers, some of whom already use GPS tracking devices. The positive impact of these devices in preventing motorcycle theft has encouraged more drivers to embrace this technology. As a result, there is a high demand from drivers wishing to work with Pascal Technologies. The initial phase of the partnership will involve rolling out 10,000 devices in Kigali, with plans for further expansion to over 50,000 devices. Altron will provide the necessary hardware, including GPS terminals and mounting units, while Pascal Technologies will handle the software installation, creating a unified cashless payment platform and tracking system. The initial investment for the 10,000 units amounts to approximately 31 million rand, with plans for continued investment as the number of devices grows. Pascal Technologies' long-standing presence in the market and deep understanding of local needs differentiate it from other companies attempting to enter the motor hailing application sector. By collaborating with public institutions and developing solutions tailored to the local community, Pascal Technologies has established a strong foothold in the market. The readiness of the Rwandan market to adopt a cashless payment system is evident through the increasing demand from both drivers and the public. Pascal Technologies has been working closely with motorcycle drivers for two years, receiving requests for quick integration of their payment platform. The flexibility to accept various payment methods, including Mastercard, Visa, and mobile money services, ensures that the system caters to diverse payment preferences. The rollout of the cashless payment system is imminent, with the initial order already placed and installation expected to commence as early as next week. This phased approach to implementation will ensure a smooth transition to the new payment system, benefiting both drivers and passengers alike.
