#GPMTBPS: MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko unpacks Gauteng’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement

Gauteng Province has unveiled its Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, outlining ambitious plans to expand the delivery of quality public services within a challenging fiscal environment. The budget, presented at the legislature, reflects the province's commitment to driving economic growth, job creation, and social development. MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, responsible for Finance and e-Government in Gauteng, shared insights on the key details and allocation of funds during a recent interview with CNBC Africa. The budget outlines key areas of spending, including job creation, education, health, social development, infrastructure, and public safety. With a focus on mitigating the economic impact of COVID-19, the provincial government has earmarked significant funds for critical sectors. A major portion of the budget, amounting to 1.3 billion, has been allocated towards job creation initiatives, particularly targeting youth employment. This investment aims to counter the adverse effects of the pandemic and stimulate economic recovery. Education received a substantial share of the budget, with 1.1 billion allocated to enhance educational assistance and support schools in adapting to the challenges posed by COVID-19. Healthcare remains a top priority, with an additional 47.4 million directed towards recruiting auxiliary nurses and enhancing healthcare services. Social development programs will receive 7.8 million to support salary top-ups and compliance efforts. Infrastructure development has also been prioritized, with 45.5 million allocated for road maintenance and transport infrastructure. The province aims to improve road networks and enhance public safety by investing in critical infrastructure projects. Notably, the budget includes a significant increase in infrastructure funding, totaling 12.3 billion to drive economic growth and advance development initiatives. MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized the importance of private sector engagement and public-private partnerships to supplement government funding and enhance service delivery. The province is actively seeking private sector involvement in infrastructure, economic development, and ICT projects. Collaborations with private entities and special economic zones aim to boost industrialization, revive the economy, and modernize infrastructure in Gauteng. To ensure accountability and transparency in fund utilization, the provincial treasury will closely monitor expenditure and address any potential leakages or issues. An oversight mechanism, led by the Houghton provincial treasury, will track funds and evaluate service delivery projects across departments. Stringent governance measures, in line with the Public Finance Management Act, will guide fund management and compliance efforts to optimize resource allocation and drive impactful outcomes. As Gauteng navigates a challenging fiscal landscape, the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement underscores the province's commitment to sustainable development, economic resilience, and inclusive growth.
