Sokowatch launches commercial electric tuk-tuks in Uganda

Uganda-based Sokowatch, an online supplier of goods to micro retailers, has taken a significant step towards combating air pollution by deploying electric tuk-tuks. These eco-friendly vehicles are poised to revolutionize the way goods are delivered, while also slashing fleet maintenance costs by more than 50 percent. Daniel Yu, the Founder of Sokowatch, spoke with CNBC Africa to shed light on how this move is a solution to the growing air pollution crisis in the region. The COVID-19 pandemic has heavily impacted commerce in Uganda and the surrounding region, leading to a notable shift towards e-commerce. Sokowatch, as a provider of essential goods to small stores and merchants in the community, has experienced a surge in demand during this period. The company has more than doubled its business size in Uganda since pre-COVID times, currently serving over 3,000 merchants, which is nearly three times the pre-pandemic number. This growth in demand has culminated in the launch of electric tuk-tuks which marks a milestone as the first commercial utilization of such vehicles in East Africa. Yu emphasized the importance of these eco-friendly vehicles in promoting sustainable mobility not only in Uganda but throughout Africa. The company sees itself as a responsible corporate citizen contributing to the future of cities while keeping sustainability at the forefront. The introduction of the electric tuk-tuks is in alignment with Sokowatch's exponential growth and will enable the company to further penetrate the market. Yu highlighted the necessity of driving change towards sustainable practices regardless of market readiness, citing the significant investments the company has made in infrastructure, research and development, and partnerships with government bodies. The move comes in response to the alarming air pollution levels in African cities, resulting in the unnecessary deaths of nearly 50,000 people annually. With urban populations expected to double by 2050, innovative solutions like electric vehicles are imperative for improving public health and ensuring environmental sustainability. Sokowatch has invested heavily in warehouse infrastructure to support the charging of electric vehicles, along with training drivers to operate and maintain them effectively. In order to combat air pollution globally, Yu stressed the importance of partnerships with stakeholders in mobility, logistics, and e-commerce sectors, urging collaboration with governments and other entities to prepare for a sustainable future. Technology plays a central role in Sokowatch's operations, with the company leveraging mobile applications and web systems to optimize delivery routes and reduce emissions. By combining zero-emission electric tuk-tuks with efficient dispatching systems, Sokowatch has achieved productivity gains that would not be possible with traditional diesel-fueled vehicles. Furthermore, the company has implemented policies to responsibly manage electronic waste and ensure the sustainable use of vehicle components. Sokowatch's commitment to environmental stewardship underscores its dedication to leveraging technology for a greener, more sustainable future.
