Scaling agricultural transformation in Africa

The 8th Africa Agribusiness and Science Week recently concluded in Durban, South Africa, with a focus on scaling agricultural transformation in the continent. BRICS Business Council Chair, Busi Mabuza, shared insights from the conference in an exclusive interview with CNBC Africa. The conference centered around the implementation of the African continental free trade area and the concept of common African agri-parks that span across multiple countries. Mabuza highlighted the potential for agri-parks in regions like Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Zambia to enhance value chains and drive economic growth. Key stakeholders from development finance institutions, UNIDO, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, and the African Business Council participated in discussions aimed at fostering collaboration and sharing best practices. The BRICS Business Council emphasized the importance of aligning discussions on agricultural transformation with their partners from BRIC nations. Despite the geopolitical noise surrounding the upcoming BRICS summit, Mabuza reassured that business conversations remain the focal point for driving economic transformation. While uncertainty looms over the summit's location and attendance, the council continues to focus on advancing trade and investment opportunities. The BRICS Agribusiness Working Group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, prioritized sustainable agricultural development, knowledge sharing on agri-technology, and addressing challenges like access to fertilizers. These efforts aim to facilitate trade and investment opportunities that benefit both BRICS nations and African countries. Mabuza also discussed upcoming visits to East and West Africa to engage with business partners and align the BRICS agenda with the aspirations of the continent. By positioning South Africa as a credible representative of African interests within the BRICS framework, the council aims to foster collaboration and support for an Africa-centric agenda.
