Lagos drives urban transportation solutions

Lagos State is making waves in urban transportation with the commercialization of the blue line rail, set to transport about 150,000 commuters daily. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, confirmed that the 50 per cent transportation fare slash also applies to the new system. The state government's efforts in this area mark a milestone achievement aimed at reducing heavy reliance on vehicle transportation. The state is set to revolutionize transportation dynamics with this new system. The rail system will operate 12 trips a day, with seven trips during the evening peak and five during the morning peak. The schedule will cater to the peak periods in Lagos, starting at 6.30 in the morning and concluding at 9.00 in the evening. Passengers will have the convenience of using the cowry card for payment, a system already in place for buses and ferries. The integration of modes of transportation through the cowry card enhances efficiency and convenience for commuters. In the initial phase, the rail system will operate without electricity for the first four weeks to test the electrification of the tracks and ensure seamless power supply. The government has invested in infrastructure and is committed to ensuring a safe and efficient transportation system for Lagosians. The red line light rail system is nearing completion, with 95 percent of the infrastructure already in place. The state government has funded the first phase of the red line, with plans for future expansion and integration into the public-private partnership model. The blue line expansion is also underway, with the second phase expected to be completed within the next three years. This expansion will accommodate a projected 500,000 passengers daily, demonstrating the state's commitment to providing accessible and efficient transportation options. The red line, spanning from Agbado to Marina, will serve as a crucial corridor for an estimated 750,000 to one million daily passengers. Lagos State's comprehensive transport master plan includes five additional rail lines and integration with buses and waterways for a seamless transport network. The state aims to create a homogeneous transport system that caters to the diverse needs of its 20 million residents. With strategic planning and investments, Lagos State is on track to transform urban transportation and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
