Africa's tech ecosystem is rapidly evolving, positioning the continent as a promising hub for technological and economic growth. In a recent interview with CNBC Africa, Lacina Koné, the CEO of Smart Africa, emphasized the critical role of innovation in shaping the future of Africa's development. With a population of 1.4 billion, a majority of which is the youth, Africa is poised to leverage technology to drive progress and capitalize on its demographic dividend. Koné highlighted the transformative power of technology, citing mobile technology and mobile money as examples of Africa's leadership in the digital space. He expressed confidence in the continent's ability to harness technology, including artificial intelligence, to leapfrog into the future. However, he acknowledged the need for more tech entrepreneurs and unicorns to emerge in Africa, calling for increased government support and awareness of the importance of tech entrepreneurship. Koné also discussed the regulatory landscape, stressing the importance of agile policies that facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship without stifling growth. He underscored the need for mentorship and capacity building to support the next generation of tech leaders in Africa. The Smart Africa Digital Academy, launched 18 months ago, has already trained thousands of decision-makers from 32 countries, signifying a proactive approach to upskilling and reskilling. Koné emphasized the inclusive nature of Smart Africa's initiatives, highlighting the use of artificial intelligence to bridge educational gaps and ensure accessibility for all. Collaboration and partnerships were identified as key drivers of progress, with the Smart Africa Digital Academy forging alliances with private sector partners to advance digital education and emerging technologies. Through a multi-faceted approach encompassing tech entrepreneurship, STEM education, and public engagement, Smart Africa is championing a new era of technological advancement across the continent.
