Airlines body roots for faster implementation of SAATM

The proper implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) is poised to unlock significant economic opportunities for the aviation industry in Africa. With 37 out of 55 countries already signed up for SAATM, comprising 82% of the aviation industry on the continent, the momentum is building towards a more integrated and robust aviation sector. Aaron Munetsi, Chief Executive Officer of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa, highlighted the progress made so far and the potential hurdles that still need to be overcome. Munetsi emphasized the importance of Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights in enabling airlines to operate more efficiently and seize the benefits of the single African air transport market. The implementation of SAATM is crucial for fostering greater connectivity and stimulating growth in the industry. However, challenges such as protectionism and currency issues continue to impede the full realization of its potential. Munetsi identified these challenges and proposed key solutions to address them, including the removal of tariff barriers, enhancing intra-Africa trade, and promoting free movement of people across the continent. By prioritizing these initiatives, the aviation industry in Africa can thrive and contribute significantly to economic development and regional integration.
