Youth innovating a borderless African renaissance

The call to Africa to develop its human capital to match the 21st-century needs has been a central theme at this year's Youth Connekt Africa Summit. Empowerment and development of digital skills have the potential to unlock the continent's potential, which boasts a youthful population. CNBC Africa recently had the opportunity to sit down with Grace Mugabekazi, Senior Policy & Programmes Advisor at Youth Connekt Africa Hub, to discuss the impact of the summit and the feedback received from young people within the continent. With the summit hosting 20,000 young individuals from across Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, it serves as a platform to bring together heads of state, policymakers, the private sector, development champions, and young people to discuss Africa's development progress, the vital role of the youth in achieving the continent's aspirations outlined in Agenda 2063, and the concerted efforts needed to drive Africa's growth. Over the last five years, the Youth Connekt Africa platform has impacted over 12 million young people, inspiring innovative programming around youth development, increased investment in youth enterprises, and youth skilling. This year's theme, 'Innovating a Borderless African Renaissance,' highlights the role of youth in propelling Africa forward through innovation and collaboration. The feedback from young people on the platform has been positive, with a call for increased investment in youth innovation, connecting innovations to market opportunities, and opening borders for enhanced trade and collaboration across the continent. The summit will cover key thematic areas such as youth health, youth entrepreneurship, and the integration of digital skills crucial in unlocking youth empowerment. Discussions will focus on the role of young people in innovating solutions for public health services and creating dignified work opportunities for the youth of Africa. Particular emphasis will be placed on incorporating technology to accelerate service delivery and cater to the evolving needs of the youth population. Regarding policies, the Youth Connekt Africa initiative has been successful in engaging young people in policy-making processes, thanks to the support of African leaders like His Excellency Paul Kagame and His Excellency William Ruto. The summit will host an intergenerational dialogue with heads of state and policymakers, providing a platform for young people to voice their opinions, engage with leaders, and contribute to shaping policy decisions that prioritize Africa's development and the empowerment of its youth.
