Kenya stands to benefit economically from AfCFTA immigration

Kenya stands to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in export markets as well as increased economic integration that could lead to changes in Kenyan immigration policies for skilled workers. Willys Mac’Olale, Director of Fragomen Kenya Ltd, highlighted how allowing free movement of labour and investments under AfCFTA can impact skilled and unskilled labor movements. The shift towards increased economic integration will lead to a surge in direct investments, creating a demand for skilled labor to manage these investments. However, to fully capitalize on the benefits of AfCFTA, Kenya needs to align its immigration policies to facilitate the movement of skilled workers and encourage investments. The shortage of skilled workers in sectors such as healthcare, information technology, engineering, and manufacturing poses a challenge to Kenya's economic growth. Mac’Olale emphasized the importance of aligning government policies to support training and development in these key sectors. The lack of synchrony between graduate skills and market demands contributes to the skill shortages in the country. The exchange of skilled workers between countries may result in both brain gain, where skilled individuals return to invest in Kenya, and brain drain, where Kenyan workers seek opportunities in other African nations.
