Sanwo-Olu: Lagos, CIG Motors sign joint venture deal to roll out 5,000 new smart taxis

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently announced the signing of a joint venture deal with CIG Motors to deploy 5,000 new smart taxis as part of efforts to enhance public transportation in the state. In an interview with CNBC Africa, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the partnership aims to drive integrated urban solutions across various public transportation sectors. The initiative is also expected to attract increased investments to facilitate the phased introduction of electric and CNG vehicles in Lagos. The collaboration between the Lagos State Government and CIG Motors marks a significant milestone in the state's quest to revolutionize its transportation system. Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored that the partnership goes beyond mere customer service to a mutually beneficial joint venture. He revealed that the initial agreement between the parties, which was established three years ago, led to the establishment of an auto assembly plant in Ikeja. The plant, which currently operates as a completely knocked down (CKD) assembly line, has already produced the first batch of Lag Ride taxis for the state's e-hailing service. The successful operation of the assembly plant paved the way for the decision to expand the fleet and introduce 5,000 smart taxis in phases. The first phase will consist of 2,000 vehicles, with a key emphasis on the incorporation of smart and eco-friendly components. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of energy transition and sustainability in the new smart taxi initiative. He indicated that a portion of the fleet would be electric vehicles, while others would run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This strategic move aligns with the state's goal of promoting energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and creating a more livable urban environment for residents. Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the holistic approach of the state's transportation strategy, which encompasses high-capacity buses, medium-capacity buses, water transportation, and taxis. The Governor emphasized that the collaboration with CIG Motors reflects a comprehensive vision for enhancing public transportation services in Lagos. When questioned about the significance of the initiative in Nigeria's transition to cleaner fuel options, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the collective efforts towards achieving a more sustainable environment. He noted that the Federal Government has already initiated steps towards energy transition and environmental resilience. However, he emphasized that Lagos State's robust fleet expansion and commitment to cleaner fuel technologies demonstrate a proactive stance in addressing environmental challenges. Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of quality public transportation services supported by effective energy transition measures in reducing carbon footprints and enhancing overall service quality. In response to inquiries about the infrastructure needed to support electric vehicle charging points and the investment requirements for scaling up production, Governor Sanwo-Olu outlined the role of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in overseeing infrastructure development. He mentioned upcoming partnerships for CNG buses to complement the electric vehicle initiative and assured that investments in charging points and infrastructure would align with the impending arrival of the new smart taxis. The Governor affirmed that the state's commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure would involve strategic investments to ensure seamless integration of the smart taxi fleet and bolster the transition to cleaner fuel alternatives.
