Driving private sector investments for Africa growth

The bureaucratic hurdles, such as the requirement for expensive feasibility studies from major consulting firms, act as a disincentive for many aspiring business owners. This results in a scenario where individuals with innovative ideas and the potential to drive economic growth are left unable to secure funding for their ventures. Moreover, Utomi stressed the importance of de-risking the investment environment in Africa. He noted that the perception of high risk among external investors often leads to overpricing of capital and hampers the profitability of businesses. In terms of near-term recommendations, Utomi highlighted the need to leverage development financial institutions and multilateral development banks to support the growth of the private sector. He called for a focus on improving the global financial architecture to better serve the needs of African businesses. Additionally, he underscored the importance of addressing fundamental issues such as land registries and corruption that hinder access to capital and impede the development of representative systems.
