Universal healthcare coverage in Egypt

Egypt has embarked on a transformative journey to revolutionize its healthcare system, aiming to provide comprehensive medical services to all its citizens. Launched in 2018 with the Universal Health Insurance Law, the system seeks to modernize healthcare infrastructure and extend coverage to every Egyptian. CNBC Africa had the opportunity to speak with Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman for Egypt Healthcare Authority, who provided insights into the progress and future plans of the healthcare reform in the country. El-Sobky highlighted the significant changes implemented since 2018, emphasizing the shift in the governance model of healthcare in Egypt. The creation of key authorities, including the Egypt Healthcare Authority responsible for healthcare delivery, the Universal Health Insurance Authority in charge of financing, and the General Authority of Accreditation and Regulation for standardization, has laid a solid foundation for the healthcare system. Additionally, the Egyptian Drug Authority and Unified Procurement Authority oversee medication and supply chain management, ensuring a holistic approach to healthcare delivery. The reform efforts have already covered six out of 27 governorates in Egypt, marking the completion of the first phase of implementation. El-Sobky expressed optimism about extending coverage to 50% of the governorates in the coming years and achieving universal health insurance for all Egyptians by 2030. The ultimate goal is to provide high-quality healthcare services to the entire population, with upgraded facilities and hospitals offering top-notch care. In addressing the challenge of non-communicable diseases, El-Sobky discussed Egypt's Presidential Initiative for Non-Communicable Diseases and the Elimination of Virus C. Launched in 2018, the campaign focused on screening the population for diseases and designing targeted health planning based on the findings. The initiative led to the successful treatment of those affected by Virus C, positioning Egypt as a global leader in disease elimination and earning recognition from the World Health Organization. As technology continues to reshape the healthcare landscape, El-Sobky underscored the role of digital health technologies in enhancing service delivery. Telemedicine, tele-ICU, tele-radiology, and wearable devices have become integral components of healthcare, bridging gaps in accessibility and quality of care. By leveraging these platforms, Egypt aims to address workforce shortages, reach remote areas, and streamline healthcare financing to maximize efficiency and minimize costs. The integration of telemedicine not only improves access to care but also optimizes service delivery and cost-effectiveness. Egypt's embrace of digital health technologies signals a new era of healthcare innovation, positioning the country at the forefront of healthcare transformation in the region.
