How green jobs can drive South Africa’s economic revival

South Africa is facing a significant challenge with youth unemployment currently sitting at around 34 per cent. As the country grapples with this issue, the drive to create renewable and green energy has emerged as a potential solution. Teboho Makhabane, Head of ESG and Impact at Sanlam Investments, joined CNBC Africa to discuss how green jobs could play a crucial role in addressing unemployment and driving economic revival. Makhabane highlighted the importance of making strategic investments in green energy to secure a sustainable future for South Africa. He emphasized that green jobs, including those in renewable energy, waste management, and infrastructure, hold the key to creating employment opportunities for the country's youth. While there is a need for upskilling and innovation in certain areas, Makhabane believes that leveraging existing skills and experiences can help bridge the gap in the workforce. One example he pointed out was the success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program, which demonstrated how collaboration between government and corporates could lead to job creation and economic growth. By replicating this model in other green sectors such as conservation, transportation, and energy efficiency, South Africa has the potential to make significant strides in reducing unemployment. Makhabane also stressed the importance of including local communities in green projects to ensure that no one is left behind. By engaging with and empowering local stakeholders, green initiatives can not only create job opportunities but also foster sustainable development across the country.
