Rare earths: Global supply chain under spotlight

The global supply of critical minerals and rare earth elements is a major concern due to their essential role in high-tech industries like electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronics. Production remains highly concentrated, with China controlling over 60% of rare earth mining and 85 per cent of processing. Governments and companies worldwide are now racing to diversify supply chains and develop new processing technologies to reduce dependence and ensure secure stable access.
