KIAC’s new e-case platform powers Rwanda’s business ambitions

Rwanda is making significant strides in digitalizing legal services with the launch of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre’s (KIAC) new E-Case Management System. This innovation is poised to bolster Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and its aspiration to emerge as a primary hub for efficient arbitration services in Africa. CNBC Africa's Ericks Shyaka recently sat down with Victor Mugabe, the Secretary General of KIAC, to delve into how this innovative platform is transforming the landscape of arbitration in Rwanda and beyond. The newly unveiled E-Case Management System marks a pivotal moment for the Kigali International Arbitration Centre. Mugabe highlighted that the traditional methods of conducting arbitration, involving physical submissions and in-person appearances, are being replaced by digital solutions. After two years of development, the digital platform is now operational, offering clients the convenience of settling disputes efficiently and cost-effectively while also contributing to environmental preservation. Mugabe emphasized the significance of the digitized system for Rwanda’s business community and entrepreneurs. With reference to Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation 2024-2029, there is a clear directive to embrace technological advancements across all sectors. The integration of electronic case management not only modernizes legal services but also ensures swift and effective resolution of business disputes. Drawing inspiration from the successful implementation of integrated electronic case management systems in state courts, KIAC has tailored its platform to cater to the unique requirements of arbitration proceedings, providing businesses with a seamless digital alternative for dispute resolution. Moreover, KIAC is strategically positioning itself as a premier international arbitration hub within Africa and globally. Despite its relatively young establishment in 2012, the center has rapidly gained recognition and was ranked among the top arbitration institutions in Africa by 2022. Mugabe underscored the commitment to continuous improvement by introducing new platforms and tools to enhance operational efficiency. The goal is to elevate KIAC’s standing even further, aiming to lead the arbitration landscape within the next few years.
