<p>ABUJA, June 28 (Reuters) &#8211; Nigeria is adding South Africa to its &#8220;red list&#8221; of countries for which there are stringent restrictions for arriving passengers, officials said during a briefing on Monday.</p>



<p>Nigeria is introducing the restrictions due to the spread of the Delta variant in South Africa, Chikwe Ihekweazu, the head of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, said. The country joins India, Brazil and Turkey on the list.</p>



<p>&#8220;In Nigeria, we haven&#8217;t found the Delta variant yet,&#8221; Ihekweazu said during the briefing.</p>



<p>Non-Nigerian passport holders and non-residents who visited the countries on the list within 14 days are barred entry from Nigeria, while passport holders and residents must undergo a seven-day quarantine in a government-approved facility at cost to the passenger.</p>



<p>They are also required to take COVID-19 tests within 24 hours or arrival and after seven days in quarantine.</p>



<p>At the briefing, Faisal Shuaib, the head of the country&#8217;s National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said Nigeria is expecting an additional 3.924 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX scheme by August 2021, and 29.85 million doses of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine through the African Union by September.</p>



<p>Nigeria received 3.92 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine via COVAX in March, and has thus far administered 3.44 million shots. It is expected to exhaust the current COVAX supply before the end of July. </p>

<p>Despite a very challenging year in 2020, the African Development Bank says it posted strong financials with its net income growing by as much as 57 per cent from 2019. Speaking with CNBC Africa’s Kenneth Igbomor, the bank’s Vice President for finance and acting Senior Vice President, Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala says despite the downgrades witnessed by countries in the region due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank maintained a strong financial performance amid the exposures.</p>

<p>South Africa, the worst-hit African country, has announced a 14-day containment measure to curb the spread of a third wave of COVID-19 infection, after recording nearly 18,000 new cases of the Delta coronavirus variant first identified in India. The Delta variant was also confirmed in Ghana last week Thursday, raising concerns about a possible entrance into neighbouring countries like Nigeria. <p>JOHANNESBURG, June 27 (Reuters) &#8211; South Africa will tighten COVID-19 restrictions for 14 days as current containment measures are insufficient to cope with the speed and scale of new infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday.</p>



<p>The country, the worst-hit on the African continent in terms of recorded cases and deaths, is in the grip of a &#8220;third wave&#8221; of infections.</p>



<p>It recorded almost 18,000 new cases on Saturday, approaching the peak of daily infections seen in a second wave in January, and local scientists say the Delta coronavirus variant first identified in India seems to be spreading fast.</p>



<p>&#8220;Additional restrictions are necessary… Our focus is on limiting social contacts while preserving the economy,&#8221; Ramaphosa said in a televised address to the nation.</p>



<p>Under the measures announced, all gatherings will be prohibited, there will be a curfew from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. and the sale of alcohol will be banned.</p>



<p>Schools will start closing from Wednesday but beaches and parks will remain open. Restaurants will only be able to sell food for takeaway or delivery.</p>



<p>&#8220;We will assess the impact of these interventions after 14 days to determine whether they need to be maintained or adjusted,&#8221; Ramaphosa said.</p>



<p>South Africa recently received 1.4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine via the COVAX Facility and an additional 1.2 million doses of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine, the president added.</p>



<p>So far the vaccine rollout in South Africa has been slow, with only around 2.7 million doses administered among a total population of 60 million.</p>



<p>Faced with opposition protests, the government has set a target of more than doubling the rate of daily vaccinations over the next month.</p>

<p>HARARE, June 24 (Reuters) &#8211; Africa is not winning its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as a third virus wave sweeps the continent and countries struggle to access enough vaccines for their populations, Africa CDC director John Nkenkasong said on Thursday.</p>



<p>The COVAX programme co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO) for fair distribution of vaccines is now planning a shake-up as it has been shunned by rich countries and failing to meet the needs of the poorest, internal documents seen by Reuters show.</p>



<p>Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) director Nkenkasong said he was more worried about getting vaccines in time regardless of where the doses came from.</p>



<p>&#8220;The third wave has come with severity that most countries were not prepared for. So the third wave is extremely brutal,&#8221; Nenkasong said during a weekly online briefing.</p>



<p>&#8220;Let me put it bluntly, we are not winning in Africa this battle against the virus so it does not really matter to me whether the vaccines are from COVAX or anywhere. All we need is rapid access to vaccines.&#8221;</p>



<p>Nkenkasong said at least 20 countries were in the middle of the third wave, with Zambia, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo among those whose health facilities were being overwhelmed.</p>



<p>The COVAX programme&#8217;s initial lofty ambitions to act as a clearing house for the world&#8217;s vaccines, collecting from the manufacturers in the most developed countries and quickly distributing to those in the most urgent need, have fallen flat.</p>



<p>About 1.12% people have been fully vaccinated on a continent that has recorded 5.2 million infections, Nkenkasong said.</p>



<p>More than half of poorer countries receiving doses via COVAX do not have enough supplies to continue, an official from the WHO said on Monday. </p>
