An island discovered by Captain Cook prepares to throw party to mark solar eclipse

In the small town of Burgeo on the south coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and a stone’s throw away from Eclipse island, its 1,100 residents are gathering to celebrate the rare solar eclipse on Monday and the town’s rediscovered history. Burgeo’s uninhabited Eclipse Island was discovered in 1766 by Captain James Cook who was surveying and exploring the local islands, experienced a solar eclipse. In recognition of this astonishing event, he named one of the isles Eclipse Island. The town is marking the rare eclipse on the Government Wharf with songs by the Burgeo First Nation drumming group and restoring a beacon on Eclipse Island.
