UPDATE 1-Rio Tinto says worker dies at Simandou project in Guinea

Oct 29 (Reuters) – Australian miner Rio Tinto said late on Monday that an employee from a contracting company had died following a safety incident at its Simandou project in Guinea on Saturday.

Activity at the SimFer port site in the project where the incident occurred has been suspended, Rio said in a statement.

“We are working with our partners and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. We will continue taking all necessary steps to achieve the highest standards of health and safety at our sites,” Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said.

Earlier this year, a small plane carrying the company’s workers

crashed

near Fort Smith in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories killing some people on board.
