Ghana’s Mahama opens slim lead in presidential election, Joy News reports

ACCRA, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Ghana’s former president and main opposition leader John Dramani Mahama held a slim lead as early results trickled in following Saturday’s presidential and legislative election, Ghana’s Joy News private television reported on Sunday.

Joy News said provisional results from 25 out of 276 constituencies nationwide showed that Mahama, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was on 50.25%, while Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was on 48.1%.

In the parliamentary election, the opposition NDC was leading with 16 seats compared with the ruling NPP’s 9 out of a total 276 seats in Parliament, Joy News reported. (Reporting by Maxwell Akalaare Adombila Writing by Bate Felix; Editing by Kirsten Donovan)
