UPDATE 1-Malawi president appoints Mwale as central bank governor

BLANTYRE, Malawi, Jan 6 (Reuters) – Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed MacDonald Mwale as the new central bank governor, replacing Wilson Banda, the secretary to the president said on Monday.

No reason for Banda’s removal was given.

Mwale’s appointment will be subject to confirmation by Malawi’s National Assembly, a statement issued by Colleen Zamba, the president’s secretary, showed.

Chakwera also appointed Kisu Simwaka as a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi. (Reporting by Frank Phiri, Writing by Bhargav Acharya; Editing by Hugh Lawson)
