Shares of the first U.S. bitcoin-linked exchange-traded fund rose in their trading debut Tuesday.



The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF, ticker “BITO,” jumped 4.8% to close at $41.94. The fund tracks CME <a href="https://www.cnbcafrica.com/quotes/btc=x/">bitcoin</a> futures, or contracts speculating on the future price of bitcoin, rather than the crypto itself.



That means investors in the ETF should expect the price and performance of the shares to differ somewhat from the price of bitcoin itself. This isn’t ideal for existing investors; many of them take a long view on cryptocurrencies and had hoped for an ETF that would track physical bitcoin that investors could buy and hold.



The price of bitcoin jumped more than 4% Tuesday to $64,206.51, according to Coin Metrics, about 1% from its all-time high from April 14 of $64,899. Bitcoin futures gained about 4% as well.



The launch highlights the remarkable growth of the ETF industry, Will Hershey, CEO of Roundhill Investments, told CNBC.



“Trading volumes are exceptional,” Hershey said of BITO’s day one trading activity. “BITO has traded in excess of $700 million notional. That puts its first day well ahead of retail ETF favorites like BUZZ and ARKX when compared to their respective launch days earlier this year.”

He noted that when the SPDR S&amp;P 500&nbsp;ETF debuted in 1993 it traded about $40 million on its first day. By the end of the trading session BITO had traded about $984 million in volume.



ProShares is the eighth-biggest ETF provider by assets, according to ETDB.com. The firm is known for its funds that use leverage to track moves in certain indexes multiplied by a certain amount. ProShares executives rang the opening bell at the NYSE, where the ETF trades. The fund has an expense ratio of 0.95%.



The crypto industry has been longing for a bitcoin-related ETF for many years. In about 2017, asset managers began applying to launch spot bitcoin ETFs but their proposals were rejected by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which maintained none were able to prove market resistance to manipulation. The rush of applications for futures-based ETFs came this year shortly after Chairman Gary Gensler took the helm of the agency.



“What you have here is a product that’s been overseen for four years by the U.S. federal regulator CFTC, and that’s being wrapped inside of something within our jurisdiction called the Investment Company Act of 1940, so we have some ability to bring it inside of investor protection,” Gensler said of the new ETF on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Tuesday. “It’s still a highly speculative asset class and listeners should understand that underneath this, it still has that same aspect of volatility and speculation.”



Some argue the impact of an ETF, particularly one tied to futures contracts, is lessened by adoption of crypto by companies and fintechs. Investors have many ways to get indirect exposure to bitcoin without actually owning it, through institutional-grade funds, financial apps like PayPal and Square’s CashApp, or crypto-related equities like Coinbase and mining stocks.



“The launch of the first bitcoin-linked ETF in the U.S. will bolster the broader crypto market and help an entirely new investor class experience the benefits of bitcoin as a legitimate asset,” said Anthony Bertolino, VP of growth at iTrustCapital. “However, a derivatives-based bitcoin ETF is not where we want to be long-term. One of the most attractive aspects of bitcoin is that it’s a bearer asset with a highly liquid 24/7 spot market. Investors will almost certainly come to desire a spot based, physically backed bitcoin ETF and 10 years from now, I would even expect some of the bitcoin ETFs to allow physical redemption for those that want it.”

The first U.S. <a href="https://www.cnbcafrica.com/quotes/btc=x/">bitcoin</a> futures exchange-traded fund will launch on Tuesday, a milestone for the cryptocurrency industry, and others may soon follow.



The long-awaited ProShares ETF will offer exposure to bitcoin futures contracts — agreements to buy or sell the asset later for an agreed-upon price — rather than bitcoin itself.



“The ETF presents a disruption to what is available in the marketplace today,” said Karan Sood, CEO and managing director of Cboe Vest, a financial advisory platform in McLean, Virginia. “That’s what investors are excited about.”



Currently, investors may buy bitcoin through digital currency exchanges, but there are safety concerns as some worry about hackers or losing so-called private keys, which provide access to their assets.    



Another option, bitcoin trusts, offer an easier way to add bitcoin to portfolios through brokerage or retirement accounts. But these assets may come with higher fees and values may not mirror the digital currency price changes.



While bitcoin futures ETFs don’t offer what the industry eventually wants — funds that invest directly in digital currency — it provides another choice as companies vie for the green light from the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch regular bitcoin ETFs.



<a href="https://www.cnbcafrica.com/2021/bitcoin-is-inches-away-from-reaching-60000-amid-etf-speculation/">The price of bitcoin jumped more than 2% on Monday to $61,958.24</a>, according to Coin Metrics.



There are a few things prospective investors need to consider before piling money into bitcoin futures ETFs, financial experts say.



Although the funds may have a “very high correlation” with bitcoin, the asset won’t mirror values of the digital currency because it tracks the price of future contracts, Sood said. 



Moreover, it costs more to own funds over individual assets. But some investors are willing to pay more for an ETF’s “institutional level liquidity, custody and execution” versus managing the currency themselves, he said.



Still, some advisors see digital currencies as a speculative asset and say betting on prices of futures contracts can be unpredictable.&nbsp;&nbsp;



“It’s just the ultimate risk that you would ever take,” said certified financial planner Jordan Benold, partner at Benold Financial Planning in Prosper, Texas, explaining how the volatility of bitcoin paired with futures contracts may be a gamble. “You’re really into high-stakes poker at this point.”



Bitcoin’s value comes from supply and demand factors of an “unstable and unpredictable group of market participants,” making it inappropriate for an investment portfolio, said CFP Anthony Watson, founder and president of Dearborn, Michigan-based Thrive Retirement Specialists.



However, if someone’s retirement savings and other goals are on track, and they have “fun money” they want to invest in bitcoin futures, some advisors wouldn’t discourage a minimal amount of experimenting.



“I would just say do it on a very, very small scale,” Benold said. “Dip your toe into the water.”

Alex Rose and Sam Browne were quick off the mark to attract investment from tennis star Serena Williams and Olympic champion Usain Bolt for their sports booking platform Let’s Do This.&nbsp;



This despite the fact that neither of them had a background in tech, unlike many start-up founders in the space.&nbsp;



Usually the story goes that a technology company was “founded by two computer scientists, who write the code themselves and live off noodles for months, and Sam and I are not computer scientists,” Rose told CNBC in a video interview. 



Rose, 31, and Browne, 29, set up Let’s Do This in July 2017. They say that it’s the world’s largest marketplace for mass-participation sports, with 15,000 events, such as marathons and triathlons, listed on the platform.&nbsp;



It’s quite a feat for a company that has only been around for just over four years, particularly considering the fact that the coronavirus pandemic brought group sporting events to a standstill.&nbsp;



The company really started to take off after the two co-founders, along with six members of their team, moved to Palo Alto, California, in 2018 to take part in the prestigious Y Combinator start-up accelerator program. Y Combinator has been the launching pad for big-name technology companies like Airbnb and Reddit.

While in California, they reached out to Pete Flint, who is general partner for venture capital firm NFX. He is perhaps most well-known for being the co-founder of online real estate marketplace Trulia, which was bought by its competitor Zillow in 2015. 



NFX then led a $5 million seed funding round in Let’s Do This in Aug. 2018. Williams and Bolt also invested in the seed funding round.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, who is married to tennis legend Williams, got in touch with the founders during the Y Combinator program. At the time, Rose said he and Browne couldn’t believe they had been contacted by “one of the most famous, well-connected alumni of the program.”&nbsp;



So Rose and Browne then asked for an introduction to Williams, who had launched her own VC firm, Serena Ventures, in 2014.&nbsp;



As for getting Bolt on board, Browne went to the Olympic gold-medalist’s bar opening in London and persuaded him to have dinner so the entrepreneur could pitch Let’s Do This.&nbsp;



“So, yeah, a real example of sort of hustling your way into the right investor meeting,” Rose said.&nbsp;



Since Rose and Browne set up Let’s Do This, the company has raised just over $31 million. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-naivety-and-overconfidence">‘Naivety and overconfidence’</h2>



Rose and Browne knew each other from childhood. They became good friends while studying at one of the U.K.’s top colleges, the University of Cambridge, where Rose studied chemical engineering and management, while Browne did a degree in theology, philosophy and psychology.&nbsp;



Both were actively involved in college sports. In fact, Browne went on to co-found adventure travel company IGO Adventures, where he was working when they set up Let’s Do This. Rose was working as an associate at management consultancy Oliver Wyman at the time.&nbsp;



The idea for Let’s Do This emerged from a conversation the pair had at the pub about how difficult it was to find and sign up for races. So they set up their one-stop platform to tackle that problem.&nbsp;



Rose admitted that they probably set about launching the business with a “combination of naivety and overconfidence.”&nbsp;



In hindsight, he said that “if we knew the things we know now about the obstacles that you have to overcome to start a business, I wonder whether we would have would have quit our jobs to do it.”

However, he also said that the launch of the business came at a time when he knew he “really hated” the job he was in, so the obstacles to starting a company didn’t seem so “terrifying, when the alternative was continuing with a job that I’d kind of fallen out of love with.”



Prior to taking part in the Y Combinator program, Rose and Browne raised £150,000 ($205,248) from a network of angel investors, who were mostly amateur athletes, that they had come into contact with through friends, in order to cover the initial start-up costs. Angel investors are typically high-net-worth individuals who back start-ups.&nbsp;



The entrepreneurs soon realized, however, that this money wouldn’t be enough to cover the costs of hiring the software engineers that they needed to actually build the platform. So they raised a further £1 million, mostly from the same group of investors.&nbsp;



However, Rose said they had to talk to a lot people before they found investors who were interested.&nbsp;



“But if you can find a problem that people are passionate about, then there are always people who are willing to back exciting ideas,” he added.

Federal Reserve officials could begin reducing the extraordinary help they’ve been providing to the economy by as soon as mid-November, according to minutes from the central bank’s September meeting released Wednesday.



The meeting summary indicated members feel the Fed has come close to reaching its economic goals and soon could begin normalizing policy by reducing the pace of its monthly asset purchases.



In a process known as tapering, the Fed would reduce the $120 billion a month in bond buys slowly. The minutes indicated the central bank probably would start by cutting $10 billion a month in Treasurys and $5 billion a month in mortgage-backed securities. The Fed is currently buying at least $80 billion in Treasurys and $40 billion in MBS.



The target date to end the purchases should there be no disruptions would be mid-2022.



The minutes noted “participants generally assessed that, provided that the economic recovery remained broadly on track, a gradual tapering process that concluded around the middle of next year would likely be appropriate.”



“Participants noted that if a decision to begin tapering purchases occurred at the next meeting, the process of tapering could commence with the monthly purchase calendars beginning in either mid-November or mid-December,” the summary said.



The Fed next meets Nov. 2-3. Starting the tapering process in November is on the aggressive side of market expectations.

The minutes said members’ estimates “were consistent with a gradual tapering of net purchases being completed in July of next year.”



“If they announce [tapering] in November, I don’t see why they would wait. Just go ahead and get going,” said Kathy Jones, chief fixed income strategist at Charles Schwab. Jones said she was a bit surprised by a notation in the minutes that “several” members “preferred to proceed with a more rapid” tapering pace.



“That would be pretty aggressive,” she said. “There must be some outspoken people who are pretty concerned that they need to move even faster.”



St. Louis Fed President James Bullard is one such member, telling CNBC on Tuesday that he thinks tapering should be more aggressive in case the Fed needs to rate interest rates next year to combat persistent inflation.



At the September policymaking session, the committee voted unanimously to hold the central bank’s benchmark short-term borrowing rate at zero to 0.25%.



The committee also released the summary of its economic expectations, including projections for GDP growth, inflation and unemployment. Members scaled back their GDP estimates for this year but upped their outlook for inflation, and indicated they expect unemployment to be lower than earlier estimates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerns-about-inflation"><a></a>Concerns about inflation</h2>



In the “dot plot” of individual members’ expectations for interest rates, the committee indicated it could begin raising interest rates as soon as 2022. Markets currently are pricing in the first rate hike for next September, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Following the release of the minutes, traders increased the likelihood of a September hike to 65% from 62%.



Officials, though, stressed that a tapering decision should not be seen as implying pending interest rate hikes.



However, some members at the meeting showed concern that current inflation pressures might last longer than they had anticipated. Traders are pricing in a 46% chance of two rate hikes in 2022.

“Most participants saw inflation risks as weighted to the upside because of concerns that supply disruptions and labor shortages might last longer and might have larger or more persistent effects on prices and wages than they currently assumed,” the minutes stated.



The document noted that “a few participants” said there could be some “downside risks” for inflation as long-standing factors that have kept prices in check come back into play. The majority of Fed officials have been holding to theme that the current price increases are transitory and due to supply chain bottlenecks, and other factors likely to subside.



Inflation pressures have continued, though, with a reading Wednesday showing that consumer prices are up 5.4% over the past year, the fastest pace in decades.

The International Energy Agency issued a sobering warning Wednesday, claiming that clean energy progress remained “far too slow to put global emissions into sustained decline towards net zero.”



The Paris-based organization made its remarks in an announcement accompanying the release of its World Energy Outlook 2021. The wide-ranging report’s publication comes as the planet gears up for the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow, Scotland, which will take place between Oct. 31 and Nov. 12.



The IEA’s report said that while electric vehicle sales achieved new records in 2020 and renewable sources such as wind and solar photovoltaic continued their rapid growth, “every data point showing the speed of change in energy can be countered by another showing the stubbornness of the status quo.” Photovoltaic refers to a way of directly converting light from the sun into electricity.

In a sign of how much work needs to be done, the WEO described how a “rapid but uneven economic recovery from last year’s Covid‐induced recession” had put significant strains on the energy system. This had sparked “sharp price rises in natural gas, coal and electricity markets.”



“For all the advances being made by renewables and electric mobility, 2021 is seeing a large rebound in coal and oil use,” the report continued. “Largely for this reason, it is also seeing the second‐largest annual increase in CO2 emissions in history.”



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-ahead">Challenges ahead</h3>



The report goes through a number of scenarios when it comes to looking at the years ahead. These include its Stated Policies Scenario, where “almost all of the net growth in energy demand to 2050 is met by low emissions sources.”



While the above sounds promising, the IEA cautions that this would leave yearly emissions at roughly today’s levels. “As a result, global average temperatures are still rising when they hit 2.6 °C above pre‐industrial levels in 2100.”



Another outlook, the Announced Pledges Scenario, looks at what would happen if the net zero commitments made by governments to date were fully implemented on time.



Under this scenario, challenges remain, according to the WEO: “The global average temperature rise in 2100 is held to around 2.1 °C above pre‐industrial levels, although this scenario does not hit net zero emissions, so the temperature trend has still not stabilised.”



The shadow of the Paris Agreement, which was reached at the COP21 summit in December 2015, looms large over both COP26 and the IEA’s report.



Described by the United Nations as a legally binding international treaty on climate change, the accord aims to “limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.”



The challenge is huge, and the United Nations has noted that 1.5 degrees Celsius is considered to be “the upper limit” when it comes to avoiding the worst consequences from climate change.

Referencing the current trajectory of CO2 emissions, the U.N. states that “temperature could increase by as much as 4.4°C by the end of the century.”



Commenting on the IEA’s newly published report, Fatih Birol, its executive director, said: “The world’s hugely encouraging clean energy momentum is running up against the stubborn incumbency of fossil fuels in our energy systems.”



“Governments need to resolve this at COP26 by giving a clear and unmistakeable signal that they are committed to rapidly scaling up the clean and resilient technologies of the future,” Birol said.



“The social and economic benefits of accelerating clean energy transitions are huge, and the costs of inaction are immense.”



Speaking to CNBC Wednesday morning, Birol expanded on his point.



World leaders coming to Glasgow, he said, “should unite and give an important, unmistakable signal to… investors around the world.“ Among other things, Birol continued, this would include telling investors they may risk losing money if they continued to invest in “dirty energy.”
