<p>JOHANNESBURG, Dec 11 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand weakened early on Wednesday ahead of domestic and U.S. inflation readings which could give clues on the future interest rate path of both countries.</p>



<p>At 0711 GMT, the rand traded at 17.85 against the U.S. dollar, about 0.2% softer than its previous close.</p>



<p>Markets will look to November consumer inflation data out of the world&#8217;s biggest economy on Wednesday to challenge or cement bets of an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next week. Markets expect a 25-basis-point cut on Dec. 18.</p>



<p>Likewise, South Africa-focussed investors will at 0800 GMT look to the November inflation print for hints on the policy path of its central bank when it meets in January.</p>



<p>Economists polled by Reuters expect South Africa&#8217;s inflation to accelerate to 3.1% year on year in November, up from 2.8% recorded in October.</p>



<p>At 1100 GMT, focus will be on South Africa&#8217;s October retail sales figures.</p>



<p>On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the blue-chip Top-40 index was down about 0.5% in early trade.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was flat in early deals, with the yield at 8.97%.</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Dec 10 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand softened early on Tuesday, at the start of a day packed with local economic data releases.</p>



<p>At 0626 GMT, the rand traded at 17.81 against the U.S. dollar, about 0.2% weaker than Monday&#8217;s close.</p>



<p>South Africa-focussed investors will look to October&#8217;s mining production data at 0930 GMT and the manufacturing output figures for the same month at 1100 GMT.</p>



<p>Although the releases will not be market-moving individually, together they are important indicators of economic performance, analysts said.</p>



<p>Also on the investors&#8217; radars will be November&#8217;s Business Confidence Index, due at 0930 GMT, for signs of private sector sentiment towards Africa&#8217;s most industrialised economy.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was little changed in early deals, with the yield at 8.895%.</p>

<p>China stocks surged and commodities and the Australian dollar found support on Tuesday on Beijing&#8217;s new promises of rate cuts and a boost to consumption, while global stocks were wobbly ahead of a crucial U.S. inflation reading.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-world-oil-prices">WORLD OIL PRICES</h2>



<p>Oil prices eased only slightly on Tuesday, holding on to most of their gains from the prior session as mounting geopolitical risk after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and China&#8217;s vow to ramp up policy stimulus kept a floor under prices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-south-africa-markets">SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS</h2>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s rand jumped on Monday at the start of a week packed with economic data releases, as gold prices climbed after China&#8217;s central bank resumed purchases of the bullion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nigeria-petroleum">NIGERIA PETROLEUM</h2>



<p>Equinor has closed the planned sale of its assets in Nigeria and Azerbaijan for a total consideration of up to $2 billion, completing exits from the two countries after some 30 years, the Norwegian oil and gas firm said on Monday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kenya-markets">KENYA MARKETS</h2>



<p>The Kenyan shilling was stable on Monday, but traders expected the currency to post gains, driven by inflows from non-governmental organizations and remittances.</p>

<p>The World Bank downgraded Kenya&#8217;s economic growth estimate for this year to 4.7% on Tuesday, from an initial 5.0%, citing the impact of floods, anti-government protests and flailing fiscal consolidation efforts.</p>

<p>Ghana&#8217;s electoral commission on Monday declared ex-president and main opposition leader John Dramani Mahama winner of Saturday&#8217;s presidential election with 56.55% of the vote, according to provisional results.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ivory-coast-cocoa">IVORY COAST COCOA</h2>



<p>Cocoa arrivals at ports in top grower Ivory Coast had reached 820,000 metric tons by December 8 since the start of the season on Oct. 1, up from 612,000 tons the same period last season, exporters estimated on Monday.</p>

<p>Dec 6 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Donor countries have pledged a record $100 billion three-year replenishment of the World Bank&#8217;s fund for the poorest nations, providing a vital lifeline for their struggles against crushing debts, climate disasters, inflation and conflict.</p>



<p>The World Bank made the announcement early on Friday in Seoul at a pledging conference for the International Development Association, which provides grants and very low-interest loans to 78 low-income countries.</p>



<p>The total exceeds the previous $93 billion IDA replenishment announced in December 2021. Countries will contribute about $24 billion directly to IDA, only marginally increased from the $23.5 billion pledged in 2021, but the fund will issue bonds and employ other financial leverage to stretch that to the targeted $100 billion in grants and loans through mid-2028.</p>



<p>The two-day pledging conference fell short of the $120 billion goal that African heads of state had called for, partly because the U.S. dollar&#8217;s strength .DXY &#8211; pushed up by Donald Trump&#8217;s U.S. presidential election victory &#8211; diminished the dollar value of significant increases in foreign currency contributions by several countries.</p>



<p>At a G20 leaders&#8217; summit in Brazil last month, Norway increased its pledge by 50% from 2021 to 5.024 billion krone. That&#8217;s $455 million at current exchange rates, but at the start of 2024, it would have been worth $496 million.</p>



<p>South Korea boosted its pledge by 45% to 846 billion won, ($597 million), Britain by 40% to 1.8 billion pounds, and Spain by 37% to 400 million euros. Spain&#8217;s pledge was worth $423 million on Friday, $10 million less than the day it was announced in October.</p>



<p>U.S. President Joe Biden pledged a $4 billion U.S. contribution, up from $3.5 billion in the previous round.</p>



<p>The World Bank did not immediately reveal the amounts of other pledges, but said that 17 donor countries had committed to raising their contributions by more than 25%, with 10 offering increases of 40% or more.</p>



<p>World Bank President Ajay Banga said in a statement that IDA will be able to stretch the new pledges further because of work done to optimize the development lender&#8217;s balance sheet over the past two years, increasing its lending capacity by some $150 billion over 10 years.</p>



<p>The bank&#8217;s ability to leverage contributions will transform &#8220;modest contributions into life-changing investments,&#8221; Banga said in an open letter to shareholders and client countries.</p>



<p>About 35 countries have graduated from IDA to become donors, including China, South Korea, Chile, Jordan, and Turkey.</p>



<p>Banga said the resources will allow the bank to put job creation at the center of its work, even as it addresses climate change and other global crises.</p>



<p>&#8220;In this context, IDA is not just a financial instrument; it is a catalyst for job creation,&#8221; Banga said. &#8220;It provides countries with the resources to build infrastructure, improve education and health systems and foster private sector growth.&#8221;</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Dec 5 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand strengthened on Thursday, ahead of the release of local current account data for the third quarter.</p>



<p>At 0714 GMT, the rand traded at 18.11 against the dollar, about 0.4% stronger than its previous close.</p>



<p>The dollar index was last down 0.2% against a basket of currencies.</p>



<p>The South African Reserve Bank will publish the country&#8217;s third quarter current account data at 0900 GMT. Analysts polled by Reuters predict a deficit of 85.5 billion rand ($4.72 billion).</p>



<p>On the stock market, the Top-40 index was up 0.2%.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was marginally weaker, with the yield up 1.5 basis points to 8.95%.</p>

<p>GENEVA, Nov 29 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;World Trade Organization chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was reappointed for a second term at a special meeting on Friday, the trade watchdog said, meaning her&nbsp;tenure&nbsp;will coincide with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s&nbsp;second administration.</p>



<p>Analysts expect the road ahead for the three-decade-old WTO will be challenging, likely characterised by trade wars with Trump, who returns to the White House on Jan. 20, threatening hefty tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China.</p>



<p>Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance minister who made history in 2021 by becoming the WTO&#8217;s first female and first African director-general, announced in September that she would run again, aiming to complete &#8220;unfinished business&#8221;.</p>



<p>No other candidates ran against her&nbsp;and all of the WTO&#8217;s 166 members agreed by consensus to a proposal to reappoint her.</p>



<p>&#8220;We have a full agenda to deliver&#8230;and we fully intend to get to work immediately, no stopping, to try and deliver on these results,&#8221; Okonjo-Iweala told journalists, citing WTO reforms and fishing negotiations as among her priorities.</p>



<p>Trade sources said the meeting created a means of fast-tracking her appointment process to avoid any risk of it being blocked by Trump, whose teams and allies have criticised both Okonjo-Iweala and the WTO in the past.</p>



<p>In 2020, his administration gave its support to a rival candidate and sought to block her first term. She secured U.S. backing only when President Joe Biden succeeded Trump in the White House&nbsp;in January 2021.</p>



<p>WTO General Council Chair and Norwegian Ambassador Petter Ølberg said the process had been fair and transparent. &#8220;We feel that we now are really fit for the next four years,&#8221; he said.</p>



<p>MOUNTING U.S.-CHINA TENSIONS</p>



<p>Even in the Biden era, WTO negotiations have made limited progress although a handful of deals were struck in Geneva in 2022. Efforts to revamp the WTO&#8217;s dispute settlement system, brought to its knees under Trump due to U.S. opposition to judge appointments, have so far failed to deliver ahead of an end-December deadline.</p>



<p>Many predict the WTO will be a theatre where mounting trade tensions between the U.S. and China will play out, with Trump&#8217;s new trade team expected to challenge Beijing&#8217;s official developing country status at the WTO that critics say endows it with unfair advantages.</p>



<p>China&#8217;s mission sent a message on X congratulating Okonjo-Iweala and saying it was looking forward to working with her and other members &#8220;to safeguard the multilateral trading system&#8221;.</p>



<p>Okonjo-Iweala said she was looking forward to working with the incoming Trump administration and that she saw common ground between them on areas like intellectual property rights. &#8220;I think we should come into things with a very constructive and creative approach to trying to deal with the issues that will face the world trading system,&#8221; she said.</p>



<p>She declined to comment on Trump&#8217;s tariff plans, calling it premature.</p>



<p>Asked to respond to remarks by Trump&#8217;s former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer that she was &#8220;China&#8217;s ally in Geneva&#8221;, she said: &#8220;The WTO has 166 members and I hope they all believe I&#8217;m their ally.&#8221;</p>

<p>Nov 27 (Reuters) &#8211; Standard Chartered is exploring a potential divestment of its wealth and retail banking operations in Botswana, Uganda and Zambia, it said on Wednesday, as the banking giant looks to free up capital in the midst of a broad shake-up.</p>



<p>The Asia-focussed lender, like rival HSBC, is restructuring its business to focus more on affluent individual customers and international companies that are likely to yield more in fees for the bank.</p>



<p>It has for some time been pivoting away from its once globe-spanning empire to focus on core businesses as it bets on strong economic growth in Asian markets and aims to rein in expenses.</p>



<p>Standard Chartered said the potential exits in Africa would be the first in a small number of business divestitures in accordance with its new target of doubling investment in its wealth unit while paring back retail banking.</p>



<p>&#8220;The group will concentrate its resources in these markets on serving the cross-border needs of global corporate and financial institution clients,&#8221; said Standard Chartered.</p>



<p>The bank, like HSBC, has in the recent past reaped the benefits of higher borrowing costs and comparatively resilient wealth generation and economic growth in Asia.</p>



<p>&#8220;This new move, if it happens, is therefore not a surprise and was something they had hinted at in their most recent results presentation,&#8221; said Gary Greenwood​​​​, equity research analyst at Shore Capital.</p>



<p>StanChart said while announcing its third-quarter earnings in October that it was looking at opportunities to sell some or all of a small number of businesses where the &#8220;strategic rationale is not sufficiently compelling&#8221;.</p>



<p>The cost-cutting measures will see the lender save around $1.5 billion over three years while expenses climb amid expanding business operations and rising pressures from sticky inflation.</p>



<p>The financial effects of the proposed exits are not material to the group, StanChart said.</p>

<p>South Africa&#8217;s rand strengthened on Monday, as investors started the week on the front foot ahead of a slew of month-end economic data releases.</p>

<p>The dollar rallied sharply on Tuesday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump pledged tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico, and additional tariffs on China.</p>

<p>Wall Street&#8217;s main indexes ended higher on Monday, with the small-cap Russell 2000 index hitting an all-time high after Scott Bessent&#8217;s nomination as U.S. Treasury secretary helped push bond yields lower.</p>

<p>Nigeria&#8217;s economy grew 3.46% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2024, quicker than in the first two quarters of the year, statistics agency data showed on Monday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kenya-markets">KENYA MARKETS</h2>



<p>The Kenyan shilling was steady against the dollar on Monday, data from the London Stock Exchange Group showed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ivory-coast-cocoa">IVORY COAST COCOA</h2>



<p>Cocoa arrivals at ports in top grower Ivory Coast had reached 643,000 metric tons by Nov. 24 since the start of the season on Oct. 1, up from 481,000 tons in the same period last season, exporters estimated on Monday.</p>
