If you want to become your own boss in 2019, coming up with a business idea is the first step. If that feels daunting, billionaire serial entrepreneur <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/richard-branson/">Richard Branson</a> has advice: Start by asking yourself what you could do to make your own life better or easier.



“Entrepreneurship in its truest form is about identifying a gap in the market and creating a product of use to fill that hole and make people’s lives better,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.virgin.com/richard-branson/opportunities-are-getting-bigger-world-getting-smaller" class="">writes Branson in a blog post on Tuesday</a>.



“Often the best way to find this gap is to look around you — are there services that could be improved or a product that could make something easier?” says Branson, who is currently worth more than $5 billion,<a href="https://www.virgin.com/richard-branson/opportunities-are-getting-bigger-world-getting-smaller" class="">&nbsp;according to Forbes</a>.



You can start by solving a small problem — it doesn’t mean the business itself will be limited.



“My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs thinking of starting their own business is:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/22/casper-co-founder-how-to-figure-out-what-to-do-with-your-life.html" class="">start small</a>&nbsp;but always think big, ” says Branson. “Technology also has allowed companies to think bigger than just selling to their local community and puts the world at their fingertips,” Branson says.



Branson follows his own advice: He himself is very active on social media. Branson has 12 million followers on Twitter, for example.



“I’ve always been one to put myself out there in order to drive awareness for Virgin and with the rise of social media it has never been easier.”



But you have to have specific awareness of who you are selling to and what want: “There is never a one-size-fits-all answer to business and being flexible and adaptable is a key skill needed for success,” Branson says.



“In order to succeed in many different regions and across cultures, we have to vary the business model and mould it to fit. For example&nbsp;<a href="https://www.virginactive.co.uk/" class="">Virgin Active</a>&nbsp;has many different health clubs around the world, but they vary in sutble ways in Johannesburg compared to London. The products that work for&nbsp;<a href="https://uk.virginmoney.com/virgin/" class="">Virgin Money</a>&nbsp;customers in Australia are going to be different to the ones customers want in South Africa. Even starting three airlines —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.virginatlantic.com/" class="">Virgin Atlantic</a>, Australia and America — required different touches depending on where they were based and flying to. “ Currently,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.virgin.com/virgingroup/content/about-us" class="">Branson’s Virgin Group</a>&nbsp;includes 60 businesses with 69,000 employees who serve 53 million customers across the globe.



He encourages others to become entrepreneurs. ”[They] are the lifeblood of the economy that drive innovation, create jobs and push humanity forward,” says Branson. “It’s never been a better time to be an entrepreneur — opportunities are getting bigger as the world is getting smaller.”

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How much money is left after meeting the basic nutritional needs?</h4>



At the beginning of every year, minimum wages are updated in many countries. However, the concept of a minimum wage is not ubiquitous: we won’t find the lowest legal remuneration in Nordic countries, Italy, Switzerland or Singapore. Although South Africa is not among the countries that ratified the United Nations&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ilo.org/dyn/normlex/en/f?p=NORMLEXPUB:11300:0::NO::P11300_INSTRUMENT_ID:312276">Minimum Wage Convention</a>, this concept is well-known and practised there.



Nevertheless, the question whether a minimum wage is high enough to allow us to meet the basic nutritional needs still remains.&nbsp;Picodi.com Analysis Team decided to take a closer look at prices of the 8 universal food groups in 52 countries and confront them with the current minimum wage in respective countries. It turns out that in some countries the minimum wage is barely high enough to purchase a modest nutritious food basket. How does&nbsp;South Africa&nbsp;look in comparison to other countries?



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Prices of basic food products</h4>



For the purpose of this report, we created an example of a shopping basket filled with items from&nbsp;the&nbsp;8 universal food groups: bread, milk, rice, eggs, cheese, meat, fruits and vegetables. Even though this list is short and frugal,&nbsp;these products meet the nutritional needs of an adult&nbsp;and the prices are constantly monitored around the world.



In South Africa, for a basket filled with basic items from the list above, you will have to pay around&nbsp;R1,159.15.

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The ratio of food prices to minimum wage</h4>



Since 1 January 2019, the minimum wage in South Africa has been R3,460.00 (net). Considering the average prices of food in South Africa,&nbsp;expenditure on basic food products makes&nbsp;33.5%&nbsp;of the minimum wage,&nbsp;which places South Africa 36th on the list of 52 countries.



According to our ranking, Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom are countries where the minimum wages are the most favourable.&nbsp;Taking into account local prices, employees with the lowest possible remuneration will spend 7% of their salary for the very same basket as people from other parts of the world.



Among countries that placed lower than South Africa were Indonesia (38th place), Pakistan (40th), Russia (42nd) and India (50th place).



The Philippines and Nigeria are in the worst situation, though. The minimum wage in Nigeria is so low that it doesn’t cover the costs of even the most basic shopping basket.

This report uses the latest information about minimum wages rates published on official government websites from 52 countries in Europe, Asia, North and South Americas, Africa and Australia. There are a few countries which update their rates on a different date than 1 January. In Greece, the minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2013. The food basket used for this report represents the average prices compiled by thousands of numbeo.com users. For currency conversion, we used the average exchange rate for December 2018.

How to survive on minimum wage

Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) for a 15% tariff increase from 1 April 2019 for three consecutive years compounded, on top of a 4,5% RCA price increase already awarded by NERSA for this date, and further RCA applications in the pipeline.



The power utility is facing dire financial constraints with excessive corporate debt of more than R420-billion (as per its interim results presentation on 28 November 2018).



Current outstanding arrear municipal and Soweto debt (for electricity delivered but not paid for) amounts to some R28-billion, and is rising by about R1-billion a month.



It would appear clear that Eskom cannot simply pass its severe financial sustainability problems on to the customer through increased tariffs. When NERSA does not give Eskom what it wants, others need to step in to help share the burden.



Eskom itself must share the burden through a lower rate of return on assets, increased efficiency and belt-tightening across the board.



The shareholder – namely government and thus the taxpayer – must share the burden through further equity injections (bailouts) linked to performance in terms of a credible recovery plan supported by government and the Treasury.



Eskom executives, management, staff and workers must share the burden through reduced pay, forgoing bonuses, reduced staff numbers, retrenchments and improved productivity.



In their own interests and to protect their existing Eskom debt, financial institutions, banks and lenders must share the burden through refinancing of existing Eskom loans with better repayment terms and lower interest rates, and by extending new loans even though with higher risk



To protect their existing Eskom business, coal suppliers must share the burden through better prices and special pricing agreements to reduce Eskom’s primary energy costs.



The justice department, police, director of public prosecutions, Hawks, courts and Eskom itself must all play their part to root out and punish perpetrators of fraud, corruption, maladministration and unauthorised expenditure at Eskom, without fear or favour.



Simply expecting electricity customers to bear the burden alone through huge tariff increases will just accelerate the utility death spiral, with severe economic consequences for the whole country.



All the combined efforts must of course be conditional upon Eskom implementing a credible restructuring and recovery plan supported by government, business, labour, communities and civil society.

That’s according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wealthx.com/report/high-net-worth-handbook-2019/?utm_campaign=HNWH2019&amp;amp;utm_source=broadcast&amp;amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;amp;utm_term=hnwh-2019-press&amp;amp;utm_source=broadcast&amp;amp;utm_medium=referral" class="">new report from wealth research firm Wealth-X</a>, which found that the countries on track for the fastest growth in their wealthy populations are select emerging nations across Africa, Asia and Europe.



The study, taken from Wealth-X’s inaugural “High Net Worth Handbook 2019,” drew on research from more than 540,000 high net worth individuals — those with a net worth of $1 million to $30 million — to forecast its outlook for global wealth growth over the next five years. It took into account current wealth levels, population growth estimates and anticipated future investment opportunities.



The report found the West African nation of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/nigeria/" class="">Nigeria</a>&nbsp;to be the front runner, set to see its high net worth population balloon by a compound annual rate of 16.3 percent between now and 2023. It was followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/egypt/" class="">Egypt</a>&nbsp;at 12.5 percent and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/bangladesh/" class="">Bangladesh</a>&nbsp;at 11.4 percent.



Here’s the full list of the 10 fastest-growing high net worth countries:

The research points to a common trend among growth forecasts, whereby less developed countries with a lower initial base line — in this case wealth — see greater relative growth.



To be sure, it would be much more difficult for incumbents like the U.S. and China — with their respective millionaire populations of 8.7 million and 1.9 million — to record the same rates,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/06/crazy-rich-asians-wealth-in-asia-grows-faster-than-us-europe-in-2018.html" class="">even though China is forecast for impressive growth</a>. However, the report unearths some interesting outliers.



Poland and Kenya, for example, are “surprising cases,” the report noted, because they are not seen in traditional groupings of top emerging nations familiarized by terms such as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey).



“The top ten countries with the fast growing HNW (high net worth) populations are a motley group,” the report noted. “With a growth measure we would expect to see some less affluent countries with small HNW populations but Poland and Kenya are two surprising cases.”



The sources of each of the nations’ wealth growth are disparate too. Commodity rich nations like Nigeria and Egypt can likely attribute much of their wealth accumulation to energy exports,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.worldultrawealthreport.com/" class="">Wealth-X noted in a separate report</a>&nbsp;from 2018. Meanwhile, Bangladesh — which has seen the world’s fastest growing ultra wealthy population (those with a net worth of more than $30 million) over the past five years — draws its success from rapid urbanization and increased infrastructure investment.



Vietnam, India, the Philippines and Kenya are among the other countries to feel the impact of greater structural investment. While Ukraine and Poland can attribute their much recent growth to a boon in their tech sectors.



Lastly China, a hotbed for new wealth, continues to benefit from its government’s comprehensive national economic agenda. The Asian giant is forecast to become home to 32 of the world’s 40 high net worth cities over the next five years.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) &#8211; South African retailer Mr Price Group Ltd reported a much slower sales growth for the third quarter, as financially constrained consumers spent less on clothes during the crucial months of November and December.



An increase in value-added tax, a rise in unemployment and inflation levels, coupled with higher fuel prices and an interest rate increase in November have reduced spending power in South Africa, Mr Price’s largest market.



This also resulted in lower Black Friday sales in November, while in December school holidays commenced a week later than the corresponding period, the group said in a statement.



During the three-months ended Dec.29, group retail sales and other income grew 3.5 percent to 7.1 billion rand ($517.36 million), while total sales of 6.7 billion rand were 2 percent higher. This compared with an 8.5 percent increase in total sales in the corresponding period.



Comparable store sales were down 0.8 percent.



Mr Price, known for its no-frills clothing and furniture stores, has grown for more than three decades by undercutting competitors and catering to thrifty shoppers’ fashion needs. But it too was not immune to the deteriorating South African consumer confidence.

Forbes Africa Under 30 opens nominations for 2019

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) &#8211; South African retail sales rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in November after increasing at a revised year-on-year rate of 2.1 percent in October, the statistics office said on Wednesday.



On a month-on-month basis, sales rose 3.3 percent in November. Sales were up 2.0 percent in the three months to the end of November compared with the same period last year, Statistics South Africa said.

South Africa’s retail sales rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in November

HARARE (Reuters) &#8211; Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest mobile operator, said on Wednesday its internet services had been cut off following an order from the government amid deadly protests in the country.



“We are obliged to act when directed to do so and the matter is beyond our control,” Econet said in a text message to customers, adding that all networks and providers had suspended their services.



Three people, including a police officer, died during Monday’s demonstrations in the capital and second city Bulawayo, which were called by the main labour union to protest a sharp rise in the price of fuel and economic hardship.



Zimbabweans accuse President Emmerson Mnangagwa of failing to live up to pre-election pledges to kick-start growth, having seen their purchasing power eroded by hyper-inflation, and using force to crush dissent like his predecessor Robert Mugabe.



Internet services were cut by mid-morning on Tuesday, leaving many people without access to social media platforms amid accusations that the government wanted to prevent images of its heavyhandedness from being broadcast around the world.



Mnangagwa has promised a clean break from 37-year rule of Mugabe, who was forced out in a de facto coup in November 2017.

Strive Masiyiwa’s Econet cuts off internet services in Zimbabwe following government order

HARARE (Reuters) &#8211; Armed Zimbabwean police arrested activist pastor Evan Mawarire at his home on Wednesday and were to charge him with inciting public violence following protests that left three people dead this week, his lawyer said.



A Reuters witness saw about a dozen heavily armed police officers bundling Mawarire into the back seat of a truck and his lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, who was present, told reporters that the pastor would be charged at a police station.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said Wednesday that South Africa’s
Reserve Bank will be left alone despite concerns that the economy is not
creating enough jobs.



The Reserve Bank, a private company with shareholders,
manages the country’s monetary policy based around inflation targeting.&nbsp;



“There is no interest whatsoever to tamper or tinker with
the independence of the Reserve Bank,” Ramaphosa said at a pre-Davos breakfast
at a Johannesburg hotel.



“Our wish is as it goes about with policy it should keep an
eye on the issue of employment.”



The Reserve Bank has cropped up in many political speeches
in recent years as the South African economy has struggled. Critics say the
central bank should forget about inflation and concentrate on stimulating job
creation &#8211; an analysis dismissed as facile and unworkable by the people who run
the central bank.

compensation in line with the calls from the radical opposition party the
Economic Freedom Fighters. It sent shivers down the spine of many foreign
investors who fear it could be the thin end of a nationalisation wedge.



“It will not be done out of vengefulness where people go
around grabbing land. That is how we do things in South Africa,” Ramaphosa told
a pre-Davos breakfast in Johannesburg.



“We are not going to cut off our noses to spite our faces
but we are going to push the interests of our people.”



Ramaphosa said the furore around land has put the issue to
the top of the agenda, which was good. He said it had lit a fire under
government to move it forward in sorting out the land question.



“Landowners have also come forward saying they now realise
how important this is and have offered to &nbsp;put land into the pot.” Says
Ramaphosa.



The president said the government would concentrate on
appropriating state owned, abandoned and unused land.



The ruling ANC goes to the polls in May in the hope of
extending its nearly 25-years in power in South Africa. It is unlikely to lose
its grip on power but knows that the land issue is likely to be a vote winner.

South Africa’s rand stabilises against the US dollar in early trade

Zimbabwean protesters took to the streets of Bulawayo on Monday morning. The protests come after Zimbabwe&#8217;s government announced a hike in fuel prices of more than 100%. 



President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced an increase of petrol prices from $1.24 a litre to $3.31, with diesel up from $1.36 a litre to $3.11. This came to effect on Sunday, 13 January 2019.

HARARE (Reuters) &#8211; Zimbabwe will introduce a new currency in the next 12 months, the finance minister said, as a shortage of U.S. dollars has plunged the financial system into disarray and forced businesses to close. 



In the past two months, the southern African nation has suffered acute shortages of imported goods, including fuel whose price was increased by 150 percent on Saturday.



Zimbabwe abandoned its own currency in 2009 after it was wrecked by hyperinflation and adopted the greenback and other currencies, such as sterling and the South African rand.



But there is not enough hard currency in the country to back up the $10 billion of electronic funds trapped in local bank accounts, prompting demands from businesses and civil servants for cash which can be deposited and used to make payments.



Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube told a townhall meeting on Friday a new local currency would be introduced in less than 12 months.



“On the issue of raising enough foreign currency to introduce the new currency, we are on our way already, give us months, not years,” he said.



Zimbabwe’s foreign reserves now provide less than two weeks cover for imports, central bank data show. The government has previously said it would only consider launching a new currency if it had at least six months of reserves.



Locals are haunted by memories of the Zimbabwean dollar, which became worthless as inflation spiralled to reach 500 billion percent in 2008, the highest rate in the world for a country not at war, wiping out pensions and savings.



A surrogate bond note currency introduced in 2016 to stem dollar shortages has also collapsed in value.



President Emmerson Mnangagwa is under pressure to revive the economy but dollar shortages are undermining efforts to win back foreign investors sidelined under his predecessor Robert Mugabe.



Mnangagwa told reporters on Saturday that the price of petrol had increased to $3.31 per litre from $1.32 from midnight but there would be no increase for foreign embassies and tourists paying in cash U.S. dollars.



Locals can pay via local debit cards, mobile phone payments and a surrogate bond note currency.



With less than $400 million in actual cash in Zimbabwe according to central bank figures, fuel shortages have worsened and companies are struggling to import raw materials and equipment, forcing them to buy greenback notes on the black market at a premium of up to 370 percent.



The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries has warned some of its members could stop operating at the end of the month due to the dollar crunch.



Cooking oil and soap maker Olivine Industries said on Saturday it had suspended production and put workers on indefinite leave because it owed foreign suppliers $11 million.



A local associate of global brewing giant Anheuser-Busch Inbev said this week it would invest more than $120 million of dividends and fees trapped in Zimbabwe into the central bank’s savings bonds. [L8N1ZA595]

Zimbabwe plans to introduce new currency in the next 12 months, what you need to know

How many of South Africa&#8217;s rising entrepreneurs remember
where they were on that warm August day, in 1997, when their countrymen made history
with style and swagger? The streets were deserted on that day &#8211; they always
were when South Africa played in those heady days &#8211; with 80,000 people crammed
into the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg and millions more crowded around
television sets. &nbsp;



South Africa had to beat Congo-Brazzaville to qualify for
the FIFA&nbsp;World Cup, in France, for the first time.



For millions, 10 seconds in the 14th minute of that historic
game will live in the memory for ever.&nbsp;



Time almost stood still as South Africa won back possession
in midfield and played a through ball to the muscular Phil Masinga, charging
down the right. He treated the last defender with disdain before unleashing a
rocket into the top right hand corner. Masinga sprinted behind the goal in
celebration, turned his shirt back-to-front and pointed to his name with his
thumb, to the heaving crowd, in unbridled joy. He said afterwards the greatest
feeling he took from that historic goal was seeing his fellow South Africans
united.



When the cameras went into the victorious dressing room
after the game, there were no cell phones, nor cynicism, just smiles and
optimism.



&#8220;For years I have heard about this World Cup, now I am
going to go there!&#8221; were the first apt, everyman, words spoken by
midfielder John &#8220;Shoes&#8221; Moshoeu &#8211; another of the talented class from
&#8217;98 who died cruelly young. &nbsp;&nbsp;



These were indeed better, more hopeful, times in the early
days of democracy in South Africa, when our football team had talent to burn.
The team was African champions and looking forward to qualifying for the World
Cup every four years, instead of fretting over playing&nbsp;the Seychelles.



Masinga, big confident and robust, was a larger-than-life
part of this feeling that South Africa was of the people and destined for
better times. Hours after that stunning goal Masinga drove back to his home
town of Klerksdorp, in North West province, to have a beer with his mates who
couldn&#8217;t afford to travel to the game. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;



The&nbsp; passing of Phil &#8220;Chippa&#8221; Masinga&nbsp; &#8211;
who died from cancer aged just 49 on January 13 &#8211; also brings into sharp focus
the steady decline of the once shimmering&nbsp; game in South Africa as well as
the life of one of its shining stars.



By 2011, South Africa was losing to minnows like Niger and
Masinga was back in Klerksdrop and broke, living in the back room of his
mother&#8217;s house. Newspaper reports told of how he was forced to sell his
football memorabilia, in a garage sale, to keep body and soul together. Sadly,
the man with the golden boot became a cautionary tale for sportsmen
contemplating life after their playing days.&nbsp;



In his prime, Masinga, who won more than 50 caps for his
country,&nbsp;was one of the first African footballers to break into the
European&nbsp; game. He played for Leeds United and also in Italy and Switzerland.



The ruling African National Congress lauded Masinga as a
true patriot who represented his nation with pride.



Many football fans will never forget that moment of magic
from Masinga&#8217;s right boot that sent his country to the World Cup for the first
time.



It is a pity his countrymen could not do more for him when
he fell on hard times. &nbsp;

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) &#8211; Before male beauty parlours began popping up in South Africa a few years ago, image-conscious men like Gerhard Joubert felt awkward being pampered and preened in salons filled with women. 



“It’s a male environment. They give you a whisky if you want a whisky. In the old days we had to go to female hair salons,” said Joubert, reclining in a luxury leather chair for a pedicure in Sorbet Man, a men-only parlour in Johannesburg. 



“I think we need to look better after ourselves. I think it’s often been ignored, particular in South Africa.” 



Two decades ago, well-groomed celebrities such as David Beckham began to change traditional attitudes towards masculinity, encouraging swathes of men to take greater care of their appearance and embrace the use of beauty products. 



South Africa has been slow to catch the “metrosexual” wave, but a growing middle class and the spread of fashion trends on social media has seen global companies such as Unilever, Procter &amp; Gamble and L’Oreal target more products at African men. 



Salon chains are opening men-only parlours to sell these products and to meet the demand for everything from manicures to eyebrow threading. 



Sorbet Man was launched as a spinoff from a women’s salon brand three years ago and now has 20 franchise stores. It expects turnover to rise 50 percent this year. 



Rival male beauty shops are springing up. 



“I think over the years the stigma about male grooming has really limited men from basically expressing themselves,” said Dexter Pillay, co-owner of Bespoke Man, a salon in Johannesburg’s business district. 



“It’s changed now so drastically where men are more metrosexual.” 



The global male grooming product market is expected to reach $76 billion by 2023 from $58 billion in 2017, according to industry research. 



Africa offers companies the chance to target millions of new consumers. 



“Africa’s youthful population is seen as a market opportunity as manufacturers look to target the young modern male who is becoming increasingly conscious about appearance,” said Nicola Cooper, a trend analyst.

For thousands of years South Americans have farmed guinea pigs &#8211; but this hasn’t taken root in most other parts of the world, including Africa. We spoke to Brigitte Maass about the opportunities that they offer as livestock and what challenges there are in producing them.

What are guinea pigs?

Guinea pigs are native to South America. In Peru they call them “cuyes”, but the animal has many different names all over the world. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), farmers call them “dende”, and we think this comes from the French name “Cochon d’Inde”, meaning “pig from India”. But they are not pigs, or from India or Guinea. We therefore prefer to call them “domestic cavies”. 

Cavies have many uses. They were domesticated thousands of years ago as a small livestock species and <a href="http://www.bioline.org.br/pdf?la07058">continue</a> to be farmed. They’ve also been <a href="http://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/animals/numbers-animals/guinea-pigs-in-medical-research/">used by</a> medical researchers to investigate diseases and, mostly in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/08927936.2016.1215524">western society</a> – like Europe or northern America – they’re kept as pets. 

But traditionally they were used for meat. And they still are today, <a href="http://www.lrrd.org/lrrd30/6/ayagi30105.html">all around</a> the world, with demand <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/10/17/497978232/peruvian-farmers-chefs-yes-chefs-cash-in-on-guinea-pig-craze">peaking</a> in South American countries like Peru and Ecuador. Cavy farming can be a lucrative business. <a href="http://elcomercio.pe/economia/negocios/exito-cuy-restaurantes-peruanos-noticia-1712352">Some farmers</a> even give up dairy farming because raising cavies is more economical. In Peru, for instance, the <a href="http://www.oxbridgeapplications.com/kyc/guinea-pig-farming/">average</a> peasant farmer earns about US$30 a month, while cavy farmers earn as much as US$130. 

Why should they be considered as a source of meat?

Domestic cavies <a href="https://academic.oup.com/af/article/4/4/25/4638808">produce</a> high-quality meat, similar to chicken, with high protein content. Their fat is also high in healthy poly-unsaturated fatty acids.

Cavies can also be eaten as an <a href="http://www.darwininitiative.org.uk/project/23015/">alternative</a> to bushmeat. A big problem for biodiversity conservation in the forest areas of central Africa.

But the most important reason is that cavies do not compete with humans for their food. When you raise chickens, for instance, you need to feed them with grains that people could eat. Cavies are almost like little cows: they feed on all types of green forage and are fairly easy to keep. They <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/231886177_Reducing_food_insecurity_in_developing_countries_through_meat_production_The_potential_of_the_guinea_pig_Cavia_porcellus">are not</a> picky in what they eat and also don’t fall sick easily. Finally, they are shy animals and less likely to escape like rabbits <a href="http://www.rabbitfreeaustralia.com.au/rabbits/the-rabbit-problem/">might do</a>, which can damage native ecosystems.

Are they currently being farmed in Africa?

Yes, <a href="http://www.fao.org/docrep/v6200t/v6200T08.htm">they are</a> being farmed in many African countries, and being eaten by millions of people. There’s the possibility that missionaries <a href="http://www.lrrd.org/lrrd30/6/ayagi30105.html">introduced them</a>, but we don’t really know when or how they came to Africa. Today they are reared in various countries including Benin, Cameroon, Côte d&#8217;Ivoire, DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Togo. 

But this isn’t well known and could be because they’re predominantly kept in houses or kitchens. It’s only in Tanzania that they are counted in the national livestock census where they’re <a href="http://www.nbs.go.tz/nbstz/index.php/english/statistics-by-subject/agriculture-statistics/261-livestocksector-national-report-census-of-agriculture-2007-2008">estimated</a> to number 600,000. But this number is probably far too low. We <a href="http://www.lrrd.org/lrrd26/8/maas26151.htm">estimate</a> that the DRC has about two million cavies, and that there are at least another half million in Cameroon. 

In countries where cavies are raised to produce meat, we’ve <a href="http://www.scholarly-journals.com/sjas/archive/2014/May/pdf/Herman%20et%20al.pdf">found</a> that it’s often women and young boys who raise and sell them. And the incomes are used to pay school fees. 

Another highly appreciated product from raising cavies is their manure. Farmers <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00s1ZlbFsQg">like it</a> because it’s higher in nitrogen than manure from other livestock, and also lighter to carry as it’s relatively dry. 

What should be done to support guinea pig farming as an industry?

For decades researchers and producers in South America <a href="http://www.tropentag.de/2016/abstracts/full/1114.pdf">have improved</a> cavy production and marketing, and they are now <a href="https://academic.oup.com/af/article/4/4/25/4638808%5D">frequently</a> sold in supermarkets. By contrast, throughout sub-Saharan Africa, there’s been almost no research or information on how to raise, produce or use cavies. 

It’s important that the whole value chain is developed, meaning markets must be developed too. To start with, more people on the continent need to consume more meat. 

In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMQ-K9ueGM0&amp;feature=youtu.be">cavy project</a> <a href="https://www.ileia.org/2014/12/20/guinea-pigs-small-livestock-big-potential/">conducted</a> in Cameroon and DRC from 2012 to 2014, we helped to develop these value chains. We established stakeholder <a href="https://cgspace.cgiar.org/handle/10568/34157">platforms</a> which connected cavy producers, traders and restaurateurs. We also invited <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ilri/9174380215">researchers</a>, reporters, bankers and politicians to several community meetings. 

Platform members got technical training and their problems were taken note of by researchers. Producers were registered as legal groups and were able to open bank accounts. Animals are now sold more expensively and, in some towns, cavy meat can be ordered in a few restaurants. In eastern DRC, vegetables produced with cavy manure <a href="http://www.darwininitiative.org.uk/project/23015/">are fetching</a> better prices in the market.
